I clicked on the Pace link and found Song Dong’s Usefulness of Uselessness. The first thing I noticed about Song Dong is that he is a video artist. Along with installations I really enjoy video art. I googled him and found him on Artsy.net. I’m really intrigued by his work and plan to do more research on him.

The Gladstone Gallery’s website is very clean in its presentation, without coming off as scarce. Its home page is characterized by large shifting images on exhibitions they currently have displayed. Since the home is so clean, the work seemed more impactful and prominent. Among the 5 that I look through, the one that struck me the most was what appeared to be a child’s corpse next to something pixelated. This forced my view more onto the grisly image of the dead child, it was very impactful so I wanted to see more.

This was the theme of this exhibition by Thomas Hirschhorn entitled “DE-PIXELATION”. There were gruesome death scenes, and images of corpses with the object of censorship being the reverse of what we’d expect of a civilized platform. This worked to do two things: drive my eyes from the things being obscured like surrounding trees, rocks, and clothing, and to drive my attention toward images we’re being “protected” from on social media and major news outlets. This isn’t to say this kind of censorship is necessarily a negative, but it definitely encourages me to question to what degree does it produce a desired and necessary effect versus becoming a pacifying and even slightly deceiving practice. All in all, a really interesting exhibit and a very visually appealing site.

I first clicked on the White Cube website. I went to the exhibitions tab and found the current art pieces. The piece that drew me in the most was by Haim Steinbach and titles jaws. It features 3 different shelf-like objects places on separate walls in a small, white room. One shelf is green, another white and another blue. They all feature fin-like shapes on top of them. On the blue shelf in particular, there are black, grey and white fins. At the far right end of the shelf, there are items that look similar to chess pieces. One is a stick with a diamond shape on the end and the other is in the shape of a tiny seahorse. It is strange to see something so large as sharks or the ocean to be displayed in such a meniscal way- but I think that is the point. I also want to write about another link I clicked on which was the vulture link about Saltz on the Trouble With Mega-Galleries. I was at first, stuck by the picture of a twisted up plane displayed indoors. For whatever reason, seeing large objects like this such as boats and planes indoors, have always given me the creeps. But I also wonder how they get such large things inside of a building. The vulture article talks about how once artists decide to “sign with the megas,” they essentially become part of a machine. I find this understandable because pieces like this can’t be done by one person. You need a team to help you. But pieces like this seem to also garner more attention (but less praise) than smaller pieces and therefore with more fame (in a way), comes more responsibility and probably less originality and personal touches in an artist’s work. “…mega-galleries are a system too big not to fail.”

Damien Hirst’s exhibition on the Gagosian website gives me mixed emotions. On one hand, I appreciate some of what Damien Hirst seeks to do with his work. But on the other hand, his tendency to have others create his works for him bothers me personally as an artist. Reading the article about the Gagosian also made me realize how some artists and organizations can become more obsessed with notoriety and branding than the creative process and idea behind art. I believe that Damien Hirst falls into this category of art that has lost it’s original way and in a sense, it’s soul.

The White Cube is just a cool name for a gallery honestly. That’s initially what drew me to it, but seeing what artists do in it is just so much more amazing than I anticipated.

The first three images are Rachel Kneebone’s sculptures. In order there is “Bewitching Balls Triptych”; “399 Days”; and “It is Harder to Limit a Disturbance Already Begun “. All of her work has to do with the human body are you catching on to the theme haha and I just love looking at them all. There’s something very disturbing about the distortion of the bodies. 

Next, when I went to leave the site and explore more, this exhibition called “Screams” by Christian Marclay popped up and I was intrigued. The whole space is filled with black and white s=drawing of screaming figures. Which is another thing I love. The use of black and white in a space to create feeling and weight. 

Very very cool, will continue to explore.

Hirst explores the uncertainty at the core of human experience; love, life, death, loyalty and betrayal through unexpected and unconventional media.

I picked the White Cube because of the title of the book we read as a class and it wasn’t one of the five top galleries discussed in the two articles under this category, Pace, David Zwirner, Gagosian, Marian Goodman, or the Hauser & Wirth.  White Cube literally has a series of exhibitions called Inside the White Cube featuring first timers in the gallery.  This and other commercial gallery sites didn’t seem too different from museum websites like MoMA, except they are definitely trying to sell something.  White Cube has a “Shop” tab, and all the descriptions of work seem, at least to me, to use a lot of superlatives and words like “intense,” “unique,” and “major.”  I put 50 St. Peter’s Cathedral Prints by Damien Hirst worth £20950.00 each in my basket before I even realized what I was doing.

Comprising installation, sculpture and video, Miroslaw Balka’s work has a bare and elegiac quality that is underlined by the careful, minimalist placement of objects, as well as the gaps and pauses between them.
