Tom Wilkinson, the Oscar-nominated British actor known for his roles in “The Full Monty," “Michael Clayton” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” has died, his family said. He was 75.

A statement shared by his agent on behalf of the family said Wilkinson died suddenly at home on Saturday. It didn't provide further details.

Domhnall Gleeson reminds me of Oliver Stark.

I just watched The Patient (2022) starring Gleeson and it was brilliant. Highly recommend!

They're both (to me) pretty in the same way. They're both ginger with lush, pink lips. I think the lips go with the whole, orangey red and pale thing.

UK accents in Our Flag Means Death

Just a quick and dirty exploration for folks from abroad of what’s up with the UK and Northern Irish cast/characters in Our Flag Means Death. I should say I’m not a linguist and have no qualifications. I’m just an ordinary Brit with probably an average ability to recognise accent diversity (for someone who has spent most of my life in London - non Londoners probably are better at this). I’ve MASSIVELY GENERALISED the geographic areas here eg there are several London accents, several more North West England accents and dialects and so on. I’m illustrating this post with the most detailed accent map I could find but it is also grossly generalised. I don’t know the actors’ full biographies, don’t want to get too nerdy about the characters, and don’t want to second guess the actors’ intentions too much. There are also class and ethnicity differences with accents I’m not going into. As just 2 examples - a Brit who hears Guz on the radio would know he’s Asian. I imagine someone from the island of Ireland would know from hearing his voice if Kristian’s background is Catholic or Protestant. So, now I’ve forewarned you re the generalisations, here it is -  quick and dirty but do add your own insights.

Like others, I suspect Bristol was chosen for pirate heritage reasons - Edward Teach may have come from Bristol and cinematic pirates often have exaggerated Southwest England accents. It would be good to hear some Cornwall or Devon in series 2, but then again maybe that’s too hack!

CHARACTER’S ACCENT: London but not super-distinctive. Softened London. 

The other crew accents don’t seem to have as many edges taken off, so I suspect it was Samson’s choice to take out some of the distinctive South London sounds.

ACTOR’S ACCENT: Northern Irish

Kristian’s own voice seems to lilt more than the character’s. A lovely voice.

Nathan seems to pretty much be using his own accent and voice.

Guz uses his own, fantastic, distinctive accent and voice. Love it. I’m going to so miss Guz in series 2 :(

CHARACTER’S ACCENT/LANGUAGE: Scottish/ Scots

Going to get on my high horse here. Because the London media is middle/upper class and English supremacist, Scottish accents and dialects and the Scots language either get limited exposure or extreme toning down. Even when being interviewed, Scottish performers will speak differently to be understood. So, I don’t know if Bremner’s own accent is working class and Leith or middle class and Portobello or what. What I do know is the unapologetic Scots of Buttons is AWESOME and the fact that we got to hear it can only be because there weren’t English Oxbridge poshos running the show. We all understood him, his expressiveness was a massive bonus in the programme and the BRITISH Broadcasting Corporation should take note. If English people get exposed to more accent and dialect diversity, they will come to understand it just like the rest of the country understands Cockney from constant exposure.

ACTOR: Con O’Neill 

CHARACTER: Izzy Hands

ACTOR’S ACCENT: North West England but not strongly so - it’s in the L sounds and not so much in the vowels

CHARACTER’S ACCENT: North West England including those ʊ sounds everyone’s loving

A mystery - why is Izzy so Northern? Did Con choose it because it sounded awesome when he swore? Did the production team want to have a diversity of country and region? Does that mean we’ll get a person cymraeg and a Geordie in series 2?

ACTOR: Rory Kinnear

CHARACTER: The Badminton twins

ACTOR’S ACCENT: Received Pronunciation (RP)

CHARACTER’S ACCENT: RP

All the English Navy officers use RP in OFMD, as indeed do many baddies in Hollywood movies. The non-officers are working class Londoners.

British and even Irish actors used to be expected to drop their country, region and class in drama school and to pick up RP. Thank goodness that doesn’t happen anymore. Yay for the diversity on The Revenge!
