Wendy Richard MBE

Wendy Richard MBE (1943-2009); English singer and actress. Ms. Richard had over 60 television and film credits in her career; her longest running role -- 1,400 episodes of the soap opera EastEnders (1985-2006) as the long-suffering matriarch Pauline Fowler! During which she was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services in television and entertainment. The young Wendy Richard was cast, in small but memorable roles, in two of the Carry On series of comedy films: Carry On Matron (1972) as Miss Willing and Carry On Girls (1973) as Ida Downs. Millions of television viewers, in the UK and the USA, will recognize Ms. Richard as the buxom, cheerful and Cockney accented shop girl, Miss Shirley Brahms, in the series Are You Being Served? (1972-1985) for a total of 69 episodes. Though some believe Ms. Richard was a native of London, she was raised in the North-East of England; her accent may have been adapted upon living in London pursuing acting, however, she worked in several shops in her youth -- adding a realism to her portrayal of Miss Brahms. Ms. Richard would return to the character in two projects: Are You Being Served? (1977 - film) and Grace & Favour (Are You Being Served? Again!) a 1992-93 TV series revival. Ms. Richard would comment that she went from a leggy, sexy single girl to a reserved matronly character within a year -- from Miss Brahms (AYBS?) to Mrs. Fowler (EastEnders); generations of fans (established and new) will continue to enjoy the versatile performances of Wendy Richard MBE -- for many years of entertainment!

Glynis Johns

Glynis Margaret Payne Johns (Oct. 5, 1923-Jan. 4, 2024); British (Welsh father & Australian mother) dancer, singer and actress. Both a star, last of the golden age of Hollywood, in her early career and a respected character actress in her remaining three decades on screen and stage! Ms. Johns entire career spanned seven decades, crossed the Atlantic, covered the entertainment spectrum (stage, TV & film) and entertained generations! A lovely lady and actress who will be missed and remembered by fans of all ages.

Glynis Johns

Glynis Johns (October 5, 1923 - January 4, 2024) aged 100, dancer, singer and actress; born in Pretoria, South Africa while her parents were on tour -- father Mervyn Johns, a Welsh stage actor and her Australian born mother Alys Steele-Payne, a concert pianist. Glynis Margaret Payne Johns, a trained ballet dancer, was on stage by age 10; eventually appearing in 60 films, multiple television series and 30 stage productions (winning a Tony Award), in a career spanning seven decades! Ms. Johns was one of the last stars of the Hollywood Studio Golden Age! Note: The studio publicity photo, in this post, is from Miranda (UK, 1948), a Fantasy comedy featuring Ms. Johns as the title character -- a beautiful mermaid introduced to London society (while keeping her sea-born origin secret); a sequel followed -- Mad About Men (UK, 1954)! The combination of sweetness and sex appeal Ms. Johns was able to bring to her character made a favorable impression with audiences of the day. Later, in starring roles or as a character actor Ms. Johns excelled in comedy, on both sides of the Atlantic -- on stage, television or on the silver screen.

Dana Gillespie

Dana Gillespie (1949-); English actress and singer-songwriter. Seen here in American International Pictures The People That Time Forgot (1977), as Ajor -- the feisty and fetching inhabitant of Edgar Rice Burroughs' lost world of Caprona. While Ms. Gillespie is known for her musical career, beginning in her teens with Folk music, as well as dating musical stars like David Bowie -- we can be grateful that she took the time to appear in several 70s action-adventure/Fantasy films produced by AIP and Hammer Studios. Note: the poster art is the work of Tom Chantrell; his film poster art began in the late 40s and continued to the 80s! Mr. Chantrell did a poster for Star Wars around the same time as the featured poster for The People That Time Forgot!
