VINYL CONNECTION
Van Morrison, Astral Weeks 1968.
What can be said about Astral Weeks? A lot and it’s all good, this is an album that cannot be faulted. His previous album Blowin’ Your Mind and debut was more Pop with the likes of Brown Eyed Girl and Van Morrison instantly shifted to Folk, Jazz and Blues and never looked back. The album is recognised as a concept album, something I’d never thought about before but after paying more attention I see it now. The album is on many Critics greatest albums list but I have always felt Van Morrison has distanced himself from Astral Weeks, with songs rarely being played live. Rolling Stone gave the album the best appraisal ‘Unique and Timeless’ and that is what it really is. There’s no weak song, songwriting and musical arrangements are second to none. This is the best album Van Morrison ever made, Moondace is a not too distant second but lacks a little depth in places. No listen to this or that song, just listen to it all, it’s that good.

Weekly World Music: “Maiden in the Mor Lay” - Marginalia
“Maiden in the Mor Lay” is a medieval song of mysterious origin and even more mysterious meaning. It dates back to at least the 14th century, where it is mentioned in the Red Book of Ossary, it’s tune used as the basis for the Marian praise song “Peperit Virgo”. No one is sure who the woman described, or her behavior, represents. The most common interpretations are that is portrays the Virgin Mary, and that the wilderness represents the world waiting for salvation; that it preserves a pre-Christian fertility rite or well-wake; or that the maiden is a figure of folk lore, such as the German moor-maidens.
Marginalia is six-piece folk band from Devon, England. They specialize in medieval music, combining poetry, riddles, and songs from the middle ages with original compositions, and a mixture of ancient and folk instruments.

Day 23 - Erddigan Y Pibydd Goch
Here's today's tune!
Yo! We made it to £500 for Refugee Action!
Thank you so much to everybody who's listened, sponsored or shared so far. It means so much, and besides, I'm having a blast recording these for you.
I'll be posting about a listening party once the full album is finished - we'll hold it sometime early next month over on Bandcamp.
Meanwhile, I've got an original fiddle reel to record! I'm calling it Red Herring's Reel. Stay tuned for that, I'm planning it for day 29!
If you're enjoying the music and would like to support Refugee Action, you can do that by either sponsoring me on my JustGiving below, or by pay-what-you-want for the album on my Bandcamp. Thanks!
