Faringdon Sponge fossils are silicified marine sponges from the Lower Cretaceous period, approximately 110-120 million years ago. These sponges lived in shallow marine environments and were preserved in the Faringdon Sponge Gravels, a world-famous fossil locality in Oxfordshire, UK. These gravels, deposited in an ancient sea, contain beautifully preserved sponges along with echinoids, brachiopods, and other marine fossils.
The silicification process replaced the original sponge material with silica, allowing for exquisite preservation of their delicate structures. Some specimens even retain evidence of encrusting organisms that lived on them millions of years ago.
