Fossil Hunting at Watton Cliff | UK Fossils Road Tour by UK Fossils Join the UK Fossils Road Tour as we explore Watton Cliff, West Bay, Dorset, one of the UK’s most important locations for collecting Jurassic microfossils. Situated along the world-famous Jurassic Coast, this fascinating site is renowned for its abundance of well-preserved microvertebrate remains, as well as a diverse range of larger fossils including brachiopods, crinoids, fish, shark teeth, crocodiles, amphibians, reptiles and plant material. Watton Cliff offers a unique fossil hunting experience for collectors interested in the smaller fossils often overlooked at many coastal locations. The exposures at Watton Cliff include the Forest Marble Formation and associated Middle Jurassic deposits, preserving evidence of both marine and non-marine environments. These fossil-rich sediments have produced an extraordinary variety of remains, making the locality one of the most scientifically significant microfossil sites on the Dorset coast. Fossils are typically collected from fallen material on the beach below the cliffs, where natural erosion continually exposes fresh specimens. In this video, we cover: • How to access Watton Cliff from West Bay and Eype • The geology of the Forest Marble Formation and surrounding strata • Why Watton Cliff is famous for microfossil collecting • Common fossils found at the location • Searching spoil and beach material for vertebrate remains • Fossil hunting equipment and collecting techniques • Safety considerations around unstable cliffs and rockfalls • Tips for identifying productive fossil-bearing material Watton Cliff is particularly popular with collectors searching for microfossils such as fish remains, shark teeth, reptile material and ostracods. Careful searching and processing of fossil-bearing sediments can reveal a remarkable diversity of specimens from the Middle Jurassic period. The site is also well known for its brachiopods and crinoid fragments, which are commonly found amongst the beach material. ⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Always check tides, weather and local conditions before visiting. Never hammer directly into cliffs and keep well clear of unstable cliff faces and recent rockfalls. Fossil collecting is undertaken entirely at your own risk. 👍 If you enjoy fossil hunting, geology and exploring Britain’s incredible prehistoric coastline, please like, subscribe and join us on future UK Fossils Road Tour adventures. Fossil Hunting at Bowleaze Cove | UK Fossils Road Tour by UK Fossils Join the UK Fossils Road Tour as we explore Bowleaze Cove, Dorset, a Jurassic Coast location at Weymouth where the Oxford Clay and Corallian rocks can be seen along the coast. This site has a long fossil collecting history, with bivalves, oysters and ammonites among the finds recorded from the area, although collecting today is best approached with realistic expectations and careful attention to access, tides and ground conditions. Bowleaze Cove is known for its Oxford Clay exposures and nearby Corallian Beds, with fossils often searched for on the foreshore, in washed clay and among areas of shingle. The UK Fossils guide notes oysters such as Gryphaea dilatata and Lopha gregarea, bivalves including Modiolus and Pleuromya, and ammonites such as Cardioceras. In this video, we focus on Bowleaze Cove itself and do not cover Furzy Cliff. In this video, we cover: • Fossil hunting at Bowleaze Cove on the Jurassic Coast • Searching the foreshore and washed clay for fossil material • The Oxford Clay and Corallian rocks exposed around the area • Common finds including oysters, bivalves and ammonites • The importance of tides, safe access and suitable footwear • A fossil preparation guide for an ammonite found on the day Bowleaze Cove can be a difficult location underfoot, especially on the rocky sections and exposed foreshore. Wellington boots or good walking boots are recommended, and fossil hunters should always check tide times before visiting. This site forms part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and is an SSSI. Hammering or digging into the cliffs or bedrock is not permitted, so collecting should be limited to loose material found responsibly on the foreshore. ⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: Fossil collecting can be dangerous. Always check tide times before visiting coastal locations, keep away from unstable cliffs, beware of slippery rocks and never hammer into cliffs or protected bedrock. Follow the UK Fossils Code of Conduct and collect responsibly. 👍 Enjoyed the video? Please like, comment and subscribe for more fossil hunting videos from the UK Fossils Road Tour. Fossil Hunting at Smallmouth Sands, Dorset | UK Fossils Road Tour by UK Fossils Join the UK Fossils Road Tour as we explore Smallmouth Sands, Dorset, a remarkable fossil collecting location within Portland Harbour near Weymouth. This often overlooked site exposes the Lower Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay and is recognised as one of the most diverse Kimmeridge Clay reptile assemblages anywhere in the world. Fossils here are usually tiny, but they can be abundant, with careful collectors finding small vertebrate remains, fish material and shells scattered across the foreshore, especially after favourable tides and storms. Smallmouth Sands is very different from many other Jurassic Coast fossil sites. Success here comes from slow, careful searching rather than looking for large, obvious specimens. The sheltered setting of Portland Harbour means erosion is relatively low, so fossils are released gradually and often occur as small fragments within shingle and clay-rich patches. The site is especially important for pterosaur remains, with a wide range of forms recorded, alongside marine reptiles, fish, sharks, crocodiles, turtles and occasional dinosaur material. In this video, we cover: • Fossil hunting at Smallmouth Sands near Weymouth • Why this Kimmeridge Clay site is so important for Jurassic reptiles • Searching for tiny fossil fragments in shingle and clay-rich areas • Pterosaur bones, teeth and other rare vertebrate remains • Marine reptiles including ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, pliosaurs and crocodiles • Fish, shark, shell and occasional ammonite finds • Why patience and careful observation are essential at this location • Responsible collecting at a GCR conservation site and SSSI The most productive collecting is usually found by scanning the foreshore slowly, especially where finer material has accumulated near clay patches and washed areas. Many fossils may only be a few millimetres to a couple of centimetres in size, so this is a location where training your eye is just as important as covering distance. Smallmouth Sands is also scientifically important, and any unusual or significant finds should be recorded. The site is a GCR conservation site and SSSI, so collecting must be carried out responsibly and sensitively at all times. ⚠️ WARNING: Fossil collecting can be dangerous. Always check tide times, weather conditions, cliff stability, local restrictions and access information before visiting any location. Never hammer cliffs, keep away from unstable slopes, and always collect responsibly. Subscribe to UK Fossils for more fossil hunting videos, location guides and Road Tour episodes from around the UK.
