Neighbourhood shops in Germany
Travelling for a while in Germany I have walked around a medium size city, in some neightbourhoods, and I have been amazed to see something that in England has largely disappeared: neighbourhood shops in residential areas, as opposed to corner convenience shops, or retail park megashops. Germany still has computer shops, and I even found in a regular residential area two tailor shops doing alterations.
Why this difference? I think the biggest reason is simple: residential property prices in Germany are much lower than in England, so shop owners can afford to pay the rent for or buy a street-level shop in a residential area. In England even street-level (or even basement) dwellings are far more profitably sold or rented as living areas than shops.
