For those of you who aren't aware, I am a Senior at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and this week was my school's Spring Break! However, due to a series of financially unfortunate events (sigh)...I was not able to travel to San Francisco as I had planned to. So with my pockets still bare but my spirit still longing for a getaway, I decided to treat myself to a personal music 'retreat,' stepping just outside the boundaries of my comfort zone and allowing myself to completely be immersed in new music! So...let's see which artists and/or songs have managed to pull my heart strings this week!
1. Bastille - Pompeii
If you're anything like me when it comes to finding foreign music online, I can never tell if the artist or their song is listed first lol. In this case, it is the artist! Bastille is a super dope band from South London, England. While I have not yet explored the full range of their music, I would have to say that their chart topping single 'Pompeii' certainly two-thumbs up from me. To be honest, I don't know why I love this song, other than the fact that lead singer Dan Smith sounds really charming, maybe even enchanting if you will.
2. Amel Larrieux - For Real
Amel Larrieux. A beautiful name for an equally beautiful person. I don't know how or WHY it took me so long to come across Amel or her music, but clearly there is no turning back. One of my favorite songs by Amel is 'For Real' and it comes off of her second studio album, Bravebird. It is written and performed with so much sincerity and emotion that anyone who knows love, even at the most basic level, will understand. For real.
3. Lady - Money
Simply put, this lovely duo, Lady, consisting of Nicole Wray and Terri Walker, knows how to sing, and sing well. With the faces of confidence and the souls of Motown, 'Lady' definitely had my eyes, ears and heart all week! Not only does the music sound good, there is also substance and a certain level of relatability in their lyrics.
4. Solange - Locked in Closets
I was never a huge fan of Solange Knowles...that is until now. While most people still know her as nothing more than Beyonce's little sister, Solange has shown and proved herself with her new EP, True. One of my favorite songs on True is 'Locked in Closets.' The beat, from the beginning, is one of the best things about the song! Not to mention, Solange sounds stunning. STUNNING! With clear traces of soul and "pop," Solange really pulled my heart strings with 'Locked in Closets' this week.
5. Grimes - Night Music Feat. Majical Cloudz
In a bad mood? Get over it and get Grimes. You will feel better. That is all.
