The Human Rights Act
EVERYONE CALM DOWN. Yes, the Tories are planning to scrap the Human Rights Act, however the way it’s been reported and spread on here makes it sound much more dramatic than it actually is.
The Human Rights Act will be replaced with a ‘British Bill of Rights’, which will make slight changes upon the original Act. It is unnerving not to know what the changes will be, and even more unnerving knowing that the Tories are in charge of it (specifically Michael Gove, ugh). The implications of this are scary but don’t freak out that you won’t be protected by any rights and think that the country is going to complete chaos because of it. It is a difficult post-election period but we have to spread information responsibly.
REASON AGAINST PR
I completely understand why the Tories are not good for the majority of the UK and I also understand that 37% is clearly not a majority HOWEVER if Labour came out victorious with 37% of the votes it would still not be a majority but there would be very few protests. If Labour won they said they would still use the 'first past the post' system because IT WORKS IN THE WINNING PARTY'S FAVOUR. The winning party wins using that system and therefore does not change it. As for those calling for proportional representation please stop. PR leads to disjointed governments made up of several parties. The government as a result is weak and argues between themselves. It also opens the door to extremist parties. This is the same system Weimar (Germany) used between the wars. The government became weak which led to the Nazis edging in and calling more and more elections till they won. VOTING NEEDS TO CHANGE BUT NOT TO PR.
Just trying to draw my frustrations away…
So this guy I know who's like a conservative fanboy and is also super rich (as in, his tuitions fees are all paid upfront and he gets £100 a week from his Dad), posted on facebook today that he's really happy because the conservatives have been re-elected and apparently he won £50. Like he is literally a rich boy showing off about gaining even more money whilst being excited about a government that wants to make further cuts to welfare and have caused the necessity for hundreds of food banks to open.
On the plus side, at least Nigel Farage fucked the fuck off.
Its raining its pouring the UK is snoring they rolled out of bed and hit their head now there is a good chance theyll have to pay £200 to get it fixed in the morning.
Very disappointed about the UK general election result, if that weren’t plainly obvious. The SNP vote came through, which is fantastic, but a slim Tory majority elsewhere rather takes the shine off.
So we have yet another constituency map showing a massive divide between what Scotland wants and what England wants, and that means another five years of Scotland stuck being the left-wing ballast for the rest of the UK. Hooray!
This especially sucks for non-Scots, though - Scotland at least has a big “count me the fuck out” button in the form of further devolution, a buffer against crazy Tory policies punching down. No such luck for everyone else though, it looks like bad times for vulnerable groups in the rest of the UK.
