A few days ago Danny Brown shared “Dirty Laundry”, the first single from his Q-Tip produced upcoming fifth LP, uknowwhatimsayin. “Dirty Laundry” takes Brown’s sexual exploits to ridiculous new heights as he recounts hookups in Burger Kings to laundry mats to peep shows with gleeful abandon “Sleep with the beast, Daniel in the lion’s den/Still drop dirty, have to pop a Niacin/Itched all damn day, just to get violated/Ever seen a roach with babies have babies?”. Q-Tip’s instrumental isn’t quite as abrasive as the soundscapes that Paul White crafted for Atrocity Exhibition and XXX, but the stuttering keys and wheezing synths still congeal to form the sort of off-kilter beat that would trip most rappers up, which makes it a natural fit for Brown’s idiosyncratic flows.

The stories that Brown details throughout “Dirty Laundry” would sound grating coming out of the mouth of anyone else, but through sheer conviction and straight up talent he’s able to render sentiments like “The she gave me head, had me moaning and groaning/Guess who I seen doing laundry next morning” as keen details observed throughout vignettes when he was struggling to keep his life together rather than just crass misadventures that they otherwise might scan as. Brown’s flows are as masterful as they’ve ever been, and despite unorthodox production he resides in the pocket the whole time. Just as I had hoped, Q-Tip is keeping Brown on his toes, and Brown is rising to the occasion of having one of the greatest producers of all time oversee his record. If the rest of uknowwhatimsayin is as good as “Dirty Laundry” there’s no question that it’ll be one of the year’s best records.
