Hi Peri! I was thinking about what you said the other day about Moz celebrating her birthday with her family and I was curious to learn more about her family and town, if you wouldn't mind talking about it! :)

hallu!! i would love to talk about moz's family and town!!!

almost everyone in her town, including her immediate family, are part of the painted heads, which is a group descended from filipino ofws who survived the bombs in california. they've traveled a long way from where they started, even surviving a giant duststorm from where they once settled in the sonoran desert, before finally settling in the mojave :) they're all pretty close since there's not a lot of them, and theyre headed by a pre-war ghoul named ka baby!!

moz's parents had four kids: the twins, lakan, and moz. unfortunately, the twins and their dad were buried by the duststorm. moz almost got buried too but she was saved by her uncle. her mom, dalisay, was never the same after that, but she's managed to find new happiness in their new settlement, with the new eatery and her grandchildren, and with a passing trader, philomena, who she fell in love with eventually :)

lakan is moz's older and only surviving brother, and theyre both fiercely protective of each other, even though theyre 8 years apart. he's the one running the family eatery, with all his eight adoptive children helping out whenever they could, age appropriately of course. meanwhile his wife guadalupe does structural repairs around the town (she was a travelling caperpenter + repairperson). they make a pretty great team!

other members who i've named are moz's best friend gabe and his family, and her cousin quincy and his family, and honestly i could go on and on about all the people populating their town but i'm going to stop here

OH ALSO birthdays are so special to moz and her family and their town at large because theyre celebrating another year of life!! theyve buried a lot of people over the years so someone making it to their birthday is a big deal every time. that's why everyone was so worried when moz didn't make it to her 35th birthday celebration and they all thought she'd died. technically, she sort of did, but also, she didn't. so they all celebrated extra hard when she came back home a month later after being shot haha!
