The Ultraman show on Netflix put me on Ultra 7. Will I ever finish any of the Ultraman shows?? No, I don't think I will. 😌
Return of Ultraman will be released on Steelbook and Blu-ray on February 25 via Mill Creek Entertainment. Also known as Ultraman Jack, it’s the fourth installment in Tsuburaya Productions’ Ultra series.
The tokusatsu series aired in Japan for 51 episodes from 1971 to 1972. Jirō Dan, Nobuo Tsukamoto, Jun Negami, Shunsuke Ikeda, Ken Nishida, Kō Mitsui, Mika Katsuragi, Shin Kishida, and Rumi Sakakibara star.
Return of Ultraman is presented in its native Japanese with DTS-HD Master Audio with English subtitles. No special features are included, but both versions come with a collector’s booklet.
Am I the only person who'd love to see Mill Creek get the rights to the Turner-produced "Ultra 7" dub from the early 90s? Depending on how heavily they got edited, they could include the English track as an alternate.
That would be awesome! It’s also NOT impossible considering all of those assets were returned to Tsuburaya after the license with Turner expired so theoretically someone at TsuPro has that dub in the vaults.

The first two are from the original Japanese broadcast.
The third is from the Hawaiian broadcast
The fourth is from the mainland US broadcast on TNT
If I'm not mistaken, the guy singing the Hawaiian Ultraseven opening is the singer of the Gingaman theme? Sounds just like him!
That’s a good ear you have there! Though he did not sing the Japanese version, Masato Shimon (子門 真人) did sing the version for the Hawaiian dub. He would later go on, under the name of Ryū Kisami (希砂未 竜) to provide the vocals for the Seijyuu Sentai Gingaman theme!
He was a pretty prolific theme singer in the 1970s, performing songs for:
Kamen RiderRedmanTriple FighterAndroid KikaiderIron KingJumborg AceFire ManKamen Rider V3Ryuusei Ningen Zone (Zone Fighter)Kikaider 01InazumanKamen Rider XKamen Rider AmazonStar of Pro-Wrestling Azteckaiserand lots and lots of anime.
Yes it was! It was broadcast by the American cable channel TNT starting in 1994 in both their Toons Til Noon and more famously Monstervision blocks. The dub was done in Canada by the Cinar group and is kind of infamous for not taking itself entirely seriously.
There were cuts made to the episodes for violence and the addition of commercials which cut the run times down a bit from their Japanese originals. They also swapped out a lot of the musical cues, created their own opening and ending sequences and changed the name of the main female character Anne to Donna. Episodes 3, 5, 6 and 7 were not also left out of this release.
One thing not changed was that episode 12 “From Another Planet with Love” which was deleted from the Japanese series after complaints that the alien enemies were insensitive to the survivors of the atomic bombings, was included in the TNT version. It was this footage which has been used, with the Japanese audio put back in, by fans to construct the missing episode.
Sadly, the contract with Tsuburaya expired in 2001 and all of the masters had to be returned to Japan. Due to licensing issues with who actually owns the right to Ultraseven outside of Japan we will likely never get it on TV again in that form. That means this version of the series is lost to time except for those of us who taped it off TV when it aired. Fortunately, you can find some episodes on Youtube!
Presented here for your pleasure is one of them:
Before the TNT version though, Tsuburaya itself (through its Hawaiian office) dubbed the series for release in the island state. This dub is VERY different from the Cinar one and was deemed unusable by Ted Turner for broadcast on the mainland. This one keeps more of the original series flavor and music, including a dubbed version of the original Japanese themesong! Take a listen!
