That feeling when Ulvund™
Aloy getting one over on Ulvund in Horizon Forbidden West (2022)
I was replaying Horizon: Forbidden West, and in the beginning, when you’re in Chainscrape, having the conversation with Ulvend and Javad the Willing, my toxic Yaoi sensors perked up. So immediately I did what any rational person would do and went to AO3
NOTHING? Okay well Tumblr absolutely has something right? A shitpost or two? A funny gif?
MUST I DO EVERYTHING MYSELF???
Ulvund
Okay, so Ulvund is. A fine minor antagonist. He works, he's serviceable. Two minor complaints. While I like the gradual "reveal" that Ulvund is an absolutely terrible leader, we're not really given the chance to come to that conclusion ourselves. The game just kind of assumes we'll side with the Carja over him, without ever really knowing what the Carja are after. It's all explained eventually, but so much of the "he's bad" stuff is frontloaded, so the reveal loses its punch.
This could work if Petra is the one to introduce it, as Aloy is much more likely to simply take her at her word, but instead Javad takes the lead on this quest, which is my second complaint. Javad is a fine one off character, but we care much more about Petra. We know she can run a town like Chainscrape already, it would make sense that she would take the position, so give her some agency in it! Let her direct Aloy to the different areas, rather than Javad, and I think this works much smoother.
