Favorite thing about them

I utterly love how he's characterized after he becomes kirby's friend for real, like I LOVE the concept of "villain gets redeemed and is now on the side of good, but they mostly keep their original aesthetic and personality". just because magolor isn't trying to conquer dreamland anymore doesn't mean he can't still be a trickster who jokes about his former acts of villainy and uses his powers for the good of the galaxy and his friends

Least favorite thing about them

noo magolor don’t steal the ancients’ old relics you’re too much of a kitty haha :/ seriously, though, this isn’t about him specifically but I don’t like that despite how many lines he has in his debut game and how many times he’s reappeared throughout the series, we’ve never gotten any information about his identity or past. he lives alone on halcandra and sort of resembles certain other characters like the sphere doomers and hyness (with his hood), but no solid info on who or what he is. even him being a descendant of the ancients is just a guess. I know this is partially favoritism but most other important characters have gotten some sort of supplementary backstory or species info, why not him?

like I said, I love magolor embracing his old villainous self for the purpose of jokes. him quoting his master crown speech to fake out kirby and the player once you buy out his shop? outstanding

BrOTP

magolor and marx is pretty much the fandom’s main one for this I think, but as I’ve said before I think taranza and magolor could be good friends too. both of them having cunning, trickster sides is a big part of it, but I also just feel like they complement and parallel each other well in terms of what they do as villains. who knows what they could bring out in each other as friends? it’d take some time in magolor learning to be a better friend and taranza becoming comfortable with reaching out to others again following the events of td, as well as a bit of luck to make sure that magolor doesn’t immediately blow it, but it could definitely work in my eyes

okay, this is just the same thing as my brotp, but I really love magolor/taranza as a romantic pairing too. I’m pretty sure I first got attached to the ship because it was two of my faves together, but I eventually started seeing the appeal more in how they compliment each other as characters. a puppeteer with an insect/floral theme versus a wizard with a mechanical theme, one is introduced as a villain but becomes an ally during the final battle while the other is introduced as an ally but is revealed as a villain for the final battle, one sees their loved one consumed and corrupted by a mysteriously powerful artifact while the other is consumed by a mysteriously powerful artifact... really, I’m starting to think these are on purpose considering that td followed rtdl in the mainline kirby platformers. like I said in the last entry I think they could bring out a lot in each other, it’s kind of a shame people don’t explore their potential relationship too often

marx and magolor...I don’t see the appeal of pairing them romantically. they’re good as prankster former final boss buddies, but I just can’t see the two as anything beyond that

Random headcanon

I have so many magolor headcanons that I never talk about, so I'll be happy to give one of my major ones here. overall I like to read him as basically a historian and archeologist by trade, he's canonically interested in the creations of the ancients so after he moves to popstar and makes up with kirby he likes to travel around the planet and study old remains of civilizations and creatures. the old temple in floralia's wild world? the sandy canyon ruins? you bet he's been there to dig up stuff and do research

Unpopular opinion

are there any POPULAR magolor opinions? but I guess mine would be that even though he always intended to betray kirby for the master crown, I think he legitimately started to like kirby as a person over the course of rtdl. like, I'm not sure why he would just tell kirby about the history of the lor starcutter if he hadn't legitimately begun to warm up to kirby in spite of himself and his plan. being under the crown's control, of course, probably helped him dispel that during the final boss fight. I feel like magolor has pretty bad instincts in terms of relationships as a consequence of living on the every-man-for-himself hellscape of halcandra where his only known companions were the various enemies and possibly marx, so of course he would hear about kirby and think, "great, someone kind to exploit". he failed to consider, however, that no one is immune to kirby's innate friend-making aura

Song I associate with them

I’ll be honest, when I got this ask I didn’t really have any songs that I think of as magolor songs specifically. my taste in music mostly consists of three artists, lots of old love songs, video game soundtracks, and whatever spotify throws my way that vibes with me, so finding character songs is a bit rarer for me. nevertheless, I like ancient dreams in a modern land by marina and archaeopteryx by lemon demon for magolor. oh no! by marina also kinda fits but I didn’t want to go with the meme answer

Favorite picture of them

this is a tough one, he’s got so many good looks and costumes, but for this ask I think I’ll go with his inclusion in the cat day twitter artwork. just the fact that he’s there means hal might be referencing Kitty Magolor which I love

ROTTMNT rewatch S1 episodes 1-5 notes

I’m rewatching ROTTMNT to get a better understanding of the characters. I’m going 5 episodes at a time to pace myself and so that these posts don’t get too long. 

Next

Here are some notes and thoughts I wrote on the characters:

Leo:

 “What? I can’t make a joke in the middle of the craziest thing ever That’s how I cope” (Mystic Mayhem) 

The one to grab splinter’s medallion (Mystic Mayhem)

 Rejects all the dangerous looking missions and start acting heroic over stopping a paper thief. (Origami Tsunami)

 And then creates a plan of making a paper shop (Origami Tsunami)

Realizes that they are getting nowhere fighting paper goons and wants to take out the source (Origami Tsunami)

His jokes get booed (Donnie’s Gifts)

Wants matching unicorn onesies for the “must say yes” stage (Down with the Sickness)

Thoughts so far: Leo is pretty clever and comes up with several ideas. He’s also pretty theatrical and enjoys playing the hero, though he can sometimes have enough sense to figure out when things are over his head. Makes a lot of puns, though his joking is definitely a coping mechanism as well. He’s pretty self aware about this.

Donnie:

The funniest, according to splinter.  (Mystic Mayhem)

Thoughts: Donnie is pretty funny with a dry sense of humor. Sometimes his jokes are inappropriately timed. Trusts his technology over his ability to use magic weapons. Described as emotionless and isn’t easily moved to sympathy. Tries to mechanically fix and improve things and people. Likes bad girls.

Raph:

The one to notice Mayhem first and go to help (“animals love me”, mayhem doesnt) (Mystic Mayhem)

Thoughts: The oldest and the leader. Under a lot of pressure and freaks out if this is brought to his attention. Generally takes things the most seriously. Straightforward; his solution is often punching things and he isn’t a planner. His brothers rely on him and follow his lead, regardless. Very sweet and considerate but has a temper that can go off on occasion. Does not always know what he wants for himself.

Mikey:

Able to recognize the M on the wall matched the symbol on splinter’s do not touch cabinet (Mystic Mayhem)

 “How about you let the artist of the crew take it?”  (Mystic Mayhem)

Perfectly imitates the M symbol.  (Mystic Mayhem)

 Razzmatazz. Likes to flip around. Donnie is a little worried that his stunts will hurt him. (Donnie’s Gifts)

Thoughts: Mikey is generally carefree and fun-loving. He is artistic and displays great visual memory. Enjoys flipping around fancily. Sympathetic. HIs brothers are the most overprotective and gentle towards him. He takes offense to how Donnie is worried that he’ll hurt himself with his fighting style.

Has the keys to a pool to enable the turtles plan  (Mystic Mayhem)

Explores the city thing under new York and finds the weapons room  (Mystic Mayhem)

Just runs in with a weapon to try and break mayhem out of a cage (Mystic Mayhem)

Job hunt (War and Pizza)

Is a very good singer (War and Pizza)

Lmao when they accused her of stealing the turtle tank she kicked them out  (The Fast and the Furriest)  

Thoughts: April is very quick to jump into action and explore. She is pretty fearless and multi-talented. There is a running gag where she looks for jobs. Big sis. The turtles enjoy hanging out with her and she calls them when she needs them.

Splinter:

Does not want to lend tv (Origami Tsunami)

Calls boys by color (Origami Tsunami)

Steals the vehicle and doesn’t want his sons finding out (The Fast and the Furriest)

Fears donnie’s punishments (The Fast and the Furriest)

Rides in a vehicle with meatsweats who tries to cook him (The Fast and the Furriest)

Wears a tattered-up robe  (Mascot Melee)

Loves the robe the turtles give them and decides to save it for special occasions (Mascot Melee)

Thoughts: These first few episodes establish him as neglectful to his kids and willing to take advantage of them. He doesn’t call them by name, he sits in front of the TV often watching Lou Jitsu, and he steals the Turtle Tank and rides with Meatsweats because he doesn’t want to get caught. Doesn’t seem to take care of himself either judging by his robe.

Leo:

Thinks he could beat a professional wrestler (Shell in a Cell)

Forces his brothers to enter a maze bc he wants to prove he’s a champion and tries to lead them  (Shell in a Cell)

Reluctant to make a portal to get them out of there bc he wants to be on the wall of champions (Minotaur Maze)

“Get behind me! My trusty cloud of noxious gas will save you!” as he wastes gas spraying it near the civilian. (Bug Busters)

Immediately suspicious of big mama  (Bug Busters)

As a result, didn’t get captured by her  (Bug Busters)

Thoughts: Minotaur Maze is probably the most Leo centric episode so far, showing his desire to prove himself, which he admits later in the episode, showing his self-awareness. He is also prone to getting a big head as shown when he wins the wrestling match to the point that he intrudes on Raph interest. Leo is also suspicious of Big Mama despite her friendly facade, maybe because he’s a little insincere himself. It’s interesting how he seems to be joking as he’s falling off a roof, as well. He knows how to play the funny man even when things are really bad.

Donnie:

“dead eye Donnie shoots and touchdown! Or insert correct sports reference”  (Bug Busters)

Thoughts: Probably the most notable thing here is how Donnie felt betrayed by Big Mama because she is the only adult that has complemented his work. That was also why he was likely so quick to trust her. He also installs antivirus software on April’s phone, thinking she would try to download malware (he’s correct). He shows his care for people by making things that would help them (or Donnie’s version of helping).

Raph:

Fan of wrestling and ghost bear.  (Shell in a Cell)

Gets so mad about leo defeating ghost bear and letting it get to his head that he faces leo in the ring  (Shell in a Cell)

Stops being a fan of ghost bear when he realizes that hes a cheater (Shell in a Cell)

“Okay remember the plan. Attract, smash. Zap, smash. Bash, smash!” (Bug Busters)

“She’s a nice lady leo, whats not to trust?”, “you would hurt a nice spider lady’s feelings, would you leo” about big mama (spoilers, she was not a nice lady) (Bug Busters)

Thoughts: He definitely takes teambuilding and leadership seriously, although his plans could use some work and are often a little overly simplistic. Interestingly, both he and Leo had episodes where they correctly distrusted someone, and the others didn’t believe them. Raph seems to be afraid of things that seem harmless, but not afraid of bullies or spider mutants. Meanwhile Leo seems to distrust a smooth talker like Big Mama. Maybe because Raph himself is very sweet, but has a bit of a temper, while Leo is a smooth talker himself. I like how he likes wrestling like 03 Raph.

Mikey:

Stole donnies thunder and stuff the entire episode without realizing it (Shell in a Cell)

Believes in ghosts (The Gumbus)

is a fan of a content creator who gets like no likes aside from him.  (The Gumbus)

Thinks hes as much of an artists as michalangelo (The Gumbus)

Is good at stacking cans and has the memory to remember how to stack them (The Gumbus)

Screams loudly and clings to his bros when scared. (Mrs. Cuddles)

Thoughts: He seems to like niche forms of art like can stacking. Once again, his impressive visual memory is on display with how he is able to remember how the cans were stacked. He can be a little oblivious and/or self-centered, as shown when he unintentionally stole Donnie’s thunder all throughout Cell in a Shell. He also seemingly has an active imagination as he believed in ghosts compared to someone more realistic like Leo (in all fairness, weirder things have happened in this franchise). He also seems to rely on his brothers for protection, being the youngest.

April:

 Wants to be acknowledged by a popular girl at her school ( Hypno! Part Deux)

Ignored the Donnie blocker  (Hypno! Part Deux)

Some guy at her school as a crush on her that she doesn’t reciprocate  (Hypno! Part Deux)

Is excited to go to a haunted store (The Gumbus)

Enjoys jumping into action (The Gumbus)

Thoughts: She’s a bit of a fish out of water among her peers, though she does want to fit in, even trying to download something that is clearly malware. Despite that she does have an admirer. She is shown once again to be brave, even enjoying going to what Mikey says in a haunted store.

Splinter:

Wont let his kids watch skateboarding bc he wants to watch commercials (The Longest Fight)

“I will never marry any of them off” (Mrs. Cuddles)

Sings opera well (Al be Back)

Thoughts: Still shown as neglectful. He won’t move off the TV for one day to let his kids watch their skateboarding. If Donnie’s response to Big Mama is any indication, he doesn’t openly acknowledge his sons’ efforts and talents. Like 03 Splinter, he can sing well in an Operatic voice (and likes TV)
