Selflessness & Selfishness in Love: "Umi E"

mild spoilers for the given manga & films ahead!

After watching Hiiragi Mix & Umi E, I was once again struck by the selflessness and selfishness of Ritsuka's finishing a love song Yuki wrote for Mafuyu.

Selfless of Ritsuka, for such an ambitious egoist to push down his own sound and jealousy so as to better allow his rival's voice to sound through.

Selfish of Ritsuka, to equate his love for Mafuyu with that of Yuki's and for so tying together the loves Mafuyu bears for them both so blatantly.

Yet, through earnest effort and much empathy, Ritsuka's "Umihe" was the most perfect gift that Mafuyu (as well as Hiiragi & Shizu) could ask for.

(it also made me reconsider Mafuyu's "Fuyu no hanashi" as being a kind of desperate revenge, on that someone now unable to hear it and on those who are surviving that inability, so that's something more for me to cry over.)

On a related note, I stumbled into some fan takes of Given's finalé that surprised me: the reading of the MafuYama beach date as Mafuyu's using Ritsuka as some "Yuki 2.0".

That was not at all how the story read to me, in any of my many re-reading and re-watching of it. It is an upsetting thing to conclude to and one perhaps I can dispel.

The final beach date in Umi E is not Mafuyu "recreating" his love with Yuki: it is Mafuyu's attempt to make Ritsuka feel as loved by Mafuyu as Mafuyu felt loved by Yuki.

It is Mafuyu's means of honouring both of his loves, something Ritsuka himself had done in "restoring" (continuing) the titular song to begin with.

Mafuyu was saved and loved and damned by Yuki for their whole lives together: to forget or ignore Yuki's influence would be to ignore the person Mafuyu has become. It would undermine all of Mafuyu's grief, his survival of it, and his brave efforts to find love again.

Mafuyu knows this: so does Ritsuka.

People are not restricted to love only once and then never again: people change, move far away, fight, hold incompatible desires, fall ill... die. The human heart is strong enough to accomodate these things, even when our brains feel as though we cannot. We can love again, even if we think we shouldn't or wish we couldn't. We can love again.

I will never be over the devastation of Mafuyu and Yuki’s love story.

But Mafuyu finally finding a part of Yuki in the song he left behind through Uenoyama?

My heart will never be fully healed.

I don't know why I love Ugetsu Murata so much..I am so much like him, but also fear becoming him..But we become what we fear the most, we keep it close...I also keep him closest to me...I will thoroughly rant in a post about Ugetsu Murata.. Actually I need need to re-watch few episodes from given..

Mafuyu finally realized it.

What Uenoyama was doing.

He was not leaving him behind.

He was trying to give him back something precious to him even if just a little piece of it.

A gift.

That memory Yuki thought Mafuyu will soon forget is now the one thing in which Yuki till exist and Ue was the one who found it.

A song of a memory in which Yuki still lives and will forever be there.

<He lives in this one little song... unchanged>

Unchanged.

Mafuyu who is afraid of change got the one thing that never will.

One last thing he can treasure forever.

Like the person who gave it to him.

Uenoyama has put everything aside to give Mafuyu the only thing Yuki couldn't anymore.

Because he loves him.

Because he knew his love needed it.

And without knowing anything else he called it "Umi e".

Where all of Yuki's remains are but also where all started anew again.
