#TheStrangerByTheBeach. Such a wholesome love story that's complemented by spot on landscapes and sceneries. This was one of the anime films that I was looking forward to watch in 2020, but because of the pandemic, I went ahead and read the manga. The story follows novelist Shun Hashimoto who struggles to find love because he likes the same gender. One day, he takes notice of high schooler Mio Chibana who he always observes sitting on a bench by the beach from the afternoon until nightfall. When Shun finally decides to approach and talk to Mio, he just gets shut out and that's basically where their cute story begins. From the manga to the film, I must say, Studio Hibari did an amazing job bringing this to life. Seeing the tiny details of the backgrounds and landscapes, you'd think it's done by Makoto Shinkai or Ghibli, but it's not. And the hang time for each of them makes you appreciate their beauty, even if they're only subtle movements like the wind blowing through the flowers or the ocean waves. I also like the contrast in colors between night and day and the smart use of light. I apologize for rambling about the technicalities. It was just done so beautifully. Apart from the stunning visuals, it's also the chemistry between Shun and Mio and that makes it all the more warm and fuzzy. Murata Taishi (Shun Ibusaki, Shokugeki no Souma) and Matsuoka Yoshitsugu (Yukihira Souma) as Shun and Mio respectively made the film more enjoyable because even their voices have chemistry. How is that even possible?! Plot-wise, it's a far cry from other Shounen Ai titles out there. This one's more laid back and what's also nice is how it normalizes same-sex relationships.
