hiii i hear you wanted to write for colston loveland, and this idea has been brewing in my head for a while and i knew you'd eat it up , its inspired by a specific tiktok i saw a couple days ago
reader is already his gf like they've been together for a while so its very comfortable and shes got her little routine on saturdays. shes always at the games and shes the one person he looks for every single time he’s on the field and i’m picturing it especially after a big win (like obvi the natty last year but could just be a random home game too)
stadium's crazy, everyone's losing their minds, cameras everywhere but colston’s only thought is where’s my girl and its not even some huge over-the-top thing it’s just him spotting her after the game and literally sprinting across the field to get to her because he needs to hug her first
here is the inspo tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ferivalerio/video/7524505033015086343

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗜𝗡𝗚 ? — 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐋𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐘, 𝐓𝐀𝐘𝐋𝐎𝐑 𝐒𝐖𝐈𝐅𝐓
By now your Saturdays move on autopilot. The alarm goes off earlier than you’d like, you slip into the same pair of Michigan sweats you’ve worn every home game since sophomore year and you head straight for your coffee maker with a mental checklist already running. Blue and maize ribbons braided into your hair? Check. Face paint in your bag in case your friends want? Check. Enough snacks packed for the tailgate so you don’t end up with regretful stadium nachos? Check.
It’s a routine built from seasons of showing up, sitting in the same section and watching the same boy you’ve loved since high school grow into someone the whole country suddenly seems to know. Sometimes it still feels bizarre that Colston is your Colston. The same kid who used to trip over his cleats trying to impress you at backyard scrimmages is now Michigan’s golden boy, TE1 and the name shouted through televisions across America.
But to you he’s just Colston. The same guy who leaves his socks everywhere and texts you twenty minutes before practice asking if you can send a picture of Penny, your roommate’s cat, because he misses her. The one who FaceTimes you half-asleep on away trips just to say “goodnight” and falls asleep before you can answer back.
You don’t think about the cameras or the noise or the sheer scale of the thing when you walk into Michigan Stadium. You don’t even think about the fact that you’ve learned most of the team’s signals just from years of watching. For you, it’s simpler than all of that: Saturday means football and football means Colston.
It’s comfortable now, this rhythm of yours. Your friends tease you for being a little superstitious like how you won’t switch seats, how you always wear your jersey even if it’s freezing - but it feels right. Like muscle memory, a quiet promise you’ve been keeping without ever saying it out loud: that you’ll always be there, no matter how big the stage gets.
The last seconds on the clock didn’t tick down so much as dissolve. One moment, the scoreboard still glared its impossible promise and the next the game was over. Michigan had done it.
The stadium erupted into something feral, a sound so big it rattled in your chest like a second heartbeat. Blue and maize confetti exploded from cannons. Strangers were hugging, crying, screaming in each other’s faces like they’d been waiting their whole lives for this. The air smelled like sweat and adrenaline and cheap beer and it felt like the whole world had cracked open.
Colston barely heard any of it. His helmet had already been ripped off and his lungs burned from the cold and from everything else - every practice, every hit, every ounce of weight carried to get to this exact moment. His teammates slammed into him, arms thrown around shoulders, voices hoarse from victory shouts. Cameras swarmed like flies, trying to catch every smile, every tear but Colston’s head was on a swivel, already searching, scanning through the chaos because he knew exactly who he needed to find.
You.
For you, it was overwhelming in a different way. Your hands shook where they clutched the cold railing of the stands, your voice gone from yelling, though you couldn’t stop screaming anyway. You’d never seen anything like it - an entire stadium folding into joy all at once. For a split second you couldn’t even pick him out in the sea of helmets and jerseys but you knew. You knew the shape of his shoulders, the way he carried himself even when he was just walking off a snap. Your eyes locked on him before you even realized you were looking.
He was laughing but it wasn’t the casual, easy laugh you knew from lazy Sundays. It was raw, unguarded, disbelief bleeding into triumph and underneath it all was the thought he couldn’t shake: we did it, we actually did it.
But tangled in that, immediate and insistent, was another thought pressing harder against his ribs: where’s she at?
The national championship wasn’t yours to win, not directly and yet, it felt like it was because you had been here for every step, every bruise, every late-night rant about playbooks and pressure. His dream had folded into yours long before tonight and now you were both standing in the middle of it, stunned.
The timer had run out. The world had changed and in the eye of it, Colston thought only of you while you thought only of him.
The noise when the clock hit zero was almost unbearable. Not just loud but bone-deep, like the entire stadium was a breathing thing that had just roared. Confetti was exploding, fireworks shooting up into the night sky and tens of thousands of people were screaming like they’d been waiting their entire lives for this.
Colston had been swept into the current of it all, the mob of teammates, the heavy slap of hands on his back, the deafening chants of “Go Blue!” echoing like thunder across the stadium. Every direction he turned there was another camera shoved in his face, another arm pulling him into a victory shot but beneath all of that, his chest was burning with one thought.
So he pulled, shoved, ducked past a reporters’ mics and sprinted toward the sideline like the game hadn’t ended at all. People yelled his name, tried to grab him for interviews but he barely heard them. His gloves were halfway off, his mouthguard still wedged between his fingers and his eyes were locked on the student section like it was the only place oxygen lived.
And then, he saw you.
Your face stood out instantly, even among the wall of blue and maize. Your hands were gripping the railing so tight your knuckles had gone pale, your eyes wide, glassy with tears of happiness. You were screaming but the sound was lost in the storm of the crowd. To him it didn’t matter.
He didn’t think. He just moved.
With one wild burst of adrenaline, Colston charged the barrier. Security shouted something but he was already planting his cleats into the padded wall, already hauling himself up like gravity didn’t apply. For a heartbeat he was suspended there. Half on the field, half in the stands, the stadium holding its breath and then he was there, right in front of you, crashing into your space in a way that knocked every ounce of air out of your lungs.
And then he was there.
Right in front of you.
For a split second you just stared at him, too shocked to even breathe. His chest was heaving, sweat dripping down his temples, confetti tangled in his hair. His eyes locked onto yours like you were the only thing in the stadium.
“Baby,” he rasped, voice raw, breaking through all the noise. His gloved hands cupped your face so suddenly you gasped. “We did it, we won. Oh my god, I love you.”
Your brain scrambled. “Colston, what-what are you doing?”
But he wasn’t listening or maybe, he couldn’t. His forehead pressed to yours and you felt his breath shake as he said it again, louder this time, with a kind of desperation you’d never heard in his voice before.
“I love you. Do you hear me? I love you. You’re all I thought about when that clock ran out.” His words tumbled out, messy and uneven, the way they always did when his emotions got ahead of him. “All I wanted, the second it ended, was to get to you. Nothing else matters. Not the cameras, not the noise, not even the trophy, just you.”
Your heart punched hard against your ribs. “Colston,” you whispered, dizzy. “There are so many people-”
“I don’t care,” he cut you off, his voice trembling. His thumbs brushed across your cheeks, his eyes glistening in a way that made your stomach flip. “Let them see. Let the whole world see. You’re mine. Always.”
And then his mouth was on yours.
It startled you. Colston never did PDA. He always said he wanted to keep you for himself, that the world didn’t need a front-row seat to your love but here he was, kissing you like it didn’t matter who was watching, who was filming, who would dissect every second on social media by morning.
The kiss swallowed you whole. Rough, urgent, not practiced or polished - it was just real. His lips crushed against yours, tasting like sweat and salt and everything you’d been waiting for all season. You clung to him instinctively, your hands sliding up into his damp hair, tugging him closer. His body was shaking, from adrenaline or emotion or maybe both and he kissed you like this was the only way to steady himself.
The stadium erupted. People were shrieking, whistling, clapping. Phones shot upward, flashes going off like fireworks. You heard your friends absolutely losing their minds - someone even shouted, “That’s Colston Loveland!” It should have embarrassed you, should have sent you diving into the ground but all you could feel was him.
Colston broke the kiss only to bury his face against your neck, still holding you so tightly it almost hurt. His voice was muffled, cracked from shouting. “I love you so much. I swear to God, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“Colston,” you whispered back. “I love you too. I’m so proud of you. You did it.”
You didn’t even have any more words, just nodded frantically as he pressed one more hard kiss to your lips.
Then, too soon - hands grabbed at him. Teammates, staff, people pulling him back to the field. He tried to linger, one last squeeze of your waist, one last desperate “I love you,” before they dragged him down and just like that, he was gone again, swallowed back into the chaos of the championship celebration.
You stood frozen, lips tingling, heart pounding like you’d just run sprints.
Then your friends pounced.
“What just happened?” One of your friends shrieked, grabbing your arm so hard you winced. “He literally - he just, he climbed up here for you!”
“Oh my god, oh my god,” another friend squealed, bouncing in place.
You covered your face with your hands, laughing and crying at the same time. “I-I don’t even know what just-he’s never, he doesn’t do PDA!”
“He doesn’t do PDA?” Your friend repeated at full volume, shaking you. “He just made out with you in front of eighty thousand people and ESPN! That’s not PDA, that’s like... a public declaration of marriage!”
The girls all screamed at once, the kind of high-pitched shriek that drew stares from everyone around you but you didn’t care, felt like your body was buzzing, like every nerve ending was sparking with disbelief.
“He told me he loved me,” you mumbled into your hands, half in shock.
“And we all heard it!” one of them yelled dramatically. “I swear the cameras picked that up. You’re going to be on TikTok tomorrow morning with like, 12 million likes,”
“You’re gonna be Mrs. Loveland one day, that’s what,” Your friend added and the group shrieked again, collapsing against each other like middle schoolers at a sleepover.
Your heart was still racing, your lips still tingling, your whole body still suspended in disbelief. It had been seconds, maybe a minute at most but the moment stretched long, like it had etched itself permanently into you.
Michigan had won the natty. The world had exploded in blue and maize. And Colston had made sure the first thing he did - the only thing he wanted, was to get to you.

The final buzzer went and a heaviness fell over the Michigan fans as they stared at the scoreboard that read 5-2. Losing in the frozen four was not the outcome anyone wanted, but for you this loss hit even harder. You knew today was the last day that you’d see your boyfriend in a Michigan jersey. What you didn’t know was it would also be the last time you saw your boyfriend.
You swore you wouldn’t get a boyfriend til at least your sophomore or even your junior year of college but the second you met Luke during your freshman year during a media day interview, you knew you wouldn't be able to resist him. Between the awkward charm and the soft curls that framed his face, you always caught yourself blushing around him. He caught onto the subtle flirts you gave back and before long the two of you were inseparable. There was an undeniable bond between you two, a pull that always brought you together, even when you pushed him away.
Your upbringing taught you a warped sense of love. The idea of unconditional love was non-existent and one that you could never understand. Early into your relationship you told Luke to never say those 3 little words, because those 3 little words hurt you more than you could have imagined. Your parents would tell you they loved you, but only after they reminded you of how much of a disappointment you were. You would spend hours doing chores, studying to get the best grades, and even perfecting an instrument you hated playing (but your mother loved) just to earn their love; but the actions, and mere response to your existence, were the opposite of love. The saying “actions speak louder than words” became more and more real as you grew older, because there are no lies in an action, only in words. So if Luke had verbally told you he loved you, it wouldn’t make a difference. Right?
Luckily Luke was an action over words kind of guy anyway. He knew every intricate detail about you. He knew your exact coffee order, and how it changed based on the weather, season, and time of day. He knew your favourite candy was jolly ranchers. He also knew the order of the flavours you liked from most to least, and would only eat the green apple ones since you didn’t like them. He knew your favourite colour was yellow, but not like the maize yellow, a pale and delicate yellow. Ironically you hated wearing yellow because you felt like it washed you out so you always wore pink. He knew that if he ever lost you in the grocery store, you were probably off looking at the flowers. You’re favourite were the wild flowers; cosmos, daisies and dahlias, and you thought roses were extremely overrated. He’d pick you up after class with a vanilla latte if it was the morning or a decaf macchiato if it was the afternoon, along with some flowers he picked off the side of the road. It didn’t take much to make you happy, but the small things made you infatuated with Luke, and doing those things was the way to show you how much he really cared.
You waited outside the locker room with the other girlfriends and family members. It was dead silent. You caught a few of the girls glance your way, giving you a small sad smile before looking away. Everyone knew that Luke would be leaving after this season, it was just unsure what day that would actually be. The silence made the truth sink in even harder.
The boys slowly came out of the locker room, sinking into their loved ones, grieving the loss and end of the season. Luke was one of the last guys to come out and you could tell he had been crying. Ethan and Mark each gave Luke a pat on the back and half smiled at you as they left with the remaining people in the hallway, leaving you and Luke to be alone for a moment.
“I’m so sorry Lukey, I know this isn’t how you wanted the season to end”. you move in to give him a hug but Luke is stiff as a board, slow to return the hug. “What’s wrong?” you say pulling back. Tears fell down Luke’s cheeks.
“I’m going to Jersey-“
“I know, but at least we have a few more days to spend together-“
“No, I'm going right now.”
Your heart sank. This was not how you pictured saying goodbye. You pictured your goodbye as more of a see you later, but this felt like more of an ending than a pause. You slowly nod, awkwardly shuffling your feet and turn your gaze to the floor.
“I'm so sorry y/n, I didn't think it would be this quick.” you nod again, a tear falling and hitting the ground. Luke puts his finger under your chin and turns your face up towards him. “I'm so sorry.” he whispers again, placing his forehead to yours.
“I know” you croak out with a quivering lip. Tears began to pour down your cheeks. Luke pulls you in one last time, planting a few kisses onto the top of your head.
“I'm sorry guys, but Luke we have a flight to catch.” Ellen interrupts, giving you a sad smile. And with that you watched your boyfriend walk away. Luke peaked back over his shoulder to get one last glimpse of you. He tried to smile but he couldn’t. He opened his mouth to say something, those 3 little words perhaps, but they sat on the edge of his tongue but never escaped his mouth. His expression softened and his eyes gave a look you had never seen before. Grief.
Starting the summer before junior year, you were unsure of where you stood with Luke. That day in the tunnel felt like a breakup, even though neither of you actually ended things. The situation though in itself was like a breakup, and your heart definitely ached. You cried a lot for the remainder of the semester, but were happy that summer was finally here and you had the chance to get together with friends. Mark and Ethan were two of the first people you met at umich, and regardless of your relationship status with Luke, would always be your friends.
“Freedom!” Mark sings, throwing his arms over yours and Ethan's shoulders as you leave your final exam.
“Finally time to relax.” Ethan sighs. You nod in agreement when all 3 of your phones ping.
Luke: Hey guys, thinking of having a lake house weekend. We never really had a chance to say bye and I miss you guys.
Dylan: hell yeah! When?
Mackie: yeah man sounds fun!
Luke: Do we wanna do the 4th of July weekend?
Mark: I'm in!
Ethan: me too
You stared at your phone then looked up at Mark and Ethan.
“What do you say y/n?” Mark nudges. You hesitated. This was the first text you've got from Luke since the frozen 4. You haven’t spoken to your “boyfriend” in weeks and the first time he does he sends a party invite in a group chat. It doesn't really scream “I miss you” to you.
“I don't know guys, this is the first I'm hearing from Luke, won't that be awkward?”
“You guys didn't break up though, so why would it be awkward?” Mark asks innocently. You know he means well, but given how the situation has played out, you didn't really have to break up.
“Look, what Mark is saying, is maybe Luke was trying to focus on playoffs and that's why he hasn't texted? His life also flipped upside down so maybe try giving him the benefit of the doubt?” He had a point but you were still hesitant.
“Hmmmm” you sighed. “I just don't want to cause drama, maybe it should be a guys thing?”
“Luke included you in the group chat so obviously he doesn't want it to be a guys thing!” Mark scoffs.
“What Mark is trying to say, again, is that we got your back.” Ethan laughs, flashing his perfect smile. “Hear Luke out and if you want to leave we’ll go too.”
Ethan always knew what to say. He was always the reassuring and supportive friend. Mark was also supportive but wasn't so good at the reassuring part, though he never failed to make you laugh. You wouldn't have made it through the rest of the semester without them.
“Okay, I’ll go since you guys are.” You roll your eyes and smile.
“Wooo it's gonna be fun!” Mark pulls you in for a hug.
The 4th approached and the only contact you got from Luke was updated in the group chat. You desperately wanted to call him, just to hear his voice but you were too scared. What if he didn't pick up? Or worse, he did and you didn't know what to say. You decided you would just wait til you were at the lakehouse. It was so much easier to speak to Luke in person. Mainly to be able to see his body language as often his voice was pretty monotone on the phone.
Your heart began to race as you pulled up to the lake house. Ethan looked at you in the rear view mirror.
“It’ll be okay y/n.” he smiles, “just try and relax a bit”
“Yeah you’re killing the vibe here.” Mark teases, which makes you let out a breathy laugh. The 3 of you got out of the car and headed into the house. Luke poked his head out from the kitchen, grinning ear to ear when he saw you.
“See, it’s all good,” Ethan nudged.
Luke came into the entryway to greet you all, pulling you in first for a long overdue hug.
“I missed you like crazy,” he whispers in your ear before planting a kiss on your temple.
“I missed you too, Lukey.” you say, returning and extra tight squeeze taking in every sense of the embrace.
More people began to arrive, and the celebratory weekend was in full swing. The day was packed full with being out on the water, in the boat, lots of food, beer pong and laughs. The day finished off with a bonfire and everyone sharing funny stories. The boys could go all night, but your eyes were starting to get heavy, each blink getting longer and longer.
“Hey let’s head to bed.” Luke leans over and says quietly.
“Together?” you answer half confused, half hopeful.
“Yeah, I’m tired too. The sun kills me.” He smiles softly at you and you nod. “Is everyone good with sleeping arrangements?” Luke announces as he stands up from his adirondack chair. The rest of the boys mumble incoherent arguments about who's sleeping in which room and with who. “They can figure it out.” Luke giggles, helping you get out around the chairs.
The two of you headed up to his room. You awkwardly stood in the middle of the room, not sure what to say or do, as Luke prepared the bed for you. Luke could sense you were uncomfortable, which he hated because in the 2 years you were together, never once was it awkward between you two. Luke clears his throat to break the stiff sense of discomfort.
“I can sleep on the floor if you want.”
“No, no, I can sleep on the floor. This is your house, you should get the bed.”
“y/n, you're not sleeping on the floor, get in the bed.” he lets out a gawky laugh as he grabs one of the extra pillows off the bed. You wince at how painful this feels and scurry to the bathroom to wash your face and brush your teeth.
“What the actual fuck.” you sigh to yourself. The day felt fine with Luke, though the two of you weren't alone at any point until now. Luke was never good with his words, but everything felt so off. You take your time with your nighttime routine, trying to think of things to talk to Luke about when you get back into the room. You didn't want to talk about hockey because he had 2 disappointing losses now, so you opted to ask about Jack and how he is settling into Jersey.
You head back to your room, giggling at the train of drunk college boys not so quietly stumbling up the stairs. When you enter your room, Luke is already passed out asleep on the floor. Disappointed in the missed opportunity to clear the air, you slid underneath the cool cotton sheets and stared blankly at the ceiling fan that hummed above. Time dragged on as you contemplated why you came to the lakehouse. You couldn't help but feel an immense sense of loss, even as you stared at Luke. The moonlight was hitting the high points of his face, making his sun kissed complexion sparkle.
“Hey” Luke grumbles.
“Hey.” You softly reply.
“Why aren’t you asleep?” His voice was soft and sincere, like it always was when he would comfort you. “Are you uncomfortable?”
“No, I just can’t seem to fall asleep. I’m okay though.” At this point Luke was already sitting up, his curls delicately grazing his eyes. He immediately got up and crawled into bed with you, gently pulling your head to his chest. He tiredly began to trace circles along your hairline, his rough callused fingers effortlessly calming you. Your eyes began to get heavy.
“y/n?” Luke asks, barely above a whisper.
“Hmm”
“Is this okay?”
“Hmm”
Luke lets out a quiet breathy laugh. “I don't mean this, I mean lying with you?”
You pull your head up so you can look Luke in the eyes. “Why wouldn’t it be okay?
“Well I just don't know where we stand, or what we are anymore.” Luke says hesitantly.
Luke can't look at you, as you shift your entire body so you’re now sitting up.
“Luke, I-I don't know what we are either.” Your voice hitched as you tried to contain your composure. You weren't one to show much emotion, but neither was Luke. Honestly the day in the tunnel was the first time either of you had cried in front of each other, which almost made things 100x more difficult.
“I don't like how things ended in the tunnel that day-”
“Same”
“And I don't want us to ever be on bad terms, even if we aren’t… dating” You could tell Luke was trying to sound optimistic, but he wasn't.
“I see. So just to be clear, you’re breaking up with me?”
“Uh, No- well,yeah”
“Luke relax, it’s okay I understand. We talked about the possibility of you having to move away. Long distance is hard.”
“Yeah. But y/n, i dont want to break up, I just don't know how it’ll work out, you know?”
“Lukey, I'd rather end on good terms and be friends then not have you in my life. You're important to me.”
“Okay. yeah I can agree with that statement.”
A clarity came upon the two of you; the awkwardness lifted. You gave Luke a smile, but he could read right through it. Your smile was tender, your dimples accentuating the expression, but your eyes were glassy and the corners of your lips quivered. Luke pulled you in tight. “It’s going to be okay” he reassured, though his heart thumping against your ear would say otherwise.
You and Luke were the first ones up and you started breakfast for the group of hungover hockey boys.
“Morning” Ethan yawns, acknowledging everyone before coming up to you. “How was last night?” he says just above a whisper.
“We officially broke up.” you say, a small ounce of disappointment came out but you managed to keep the smile on your face tqhe same.
“what?! you and Luke broke up?” Mark half yells, eavesdropping as he passes by. you look blankly at Mark before rolling your eyes and laughing it off.
“Thanks for sharing with the class Mark!” Luke jokes, trying to keep the awkwardness at a minimum.
The rest of the boys sauntered into the kitchen and the whole thing was dropped, but Ethan kept an eye out for you for the rest of the day, checking in to see how you were holding up.
“Eth, I'm fine. I promise.”
“i just don’t want you to feel uncomfortable.”
“It was mutual and for the better.” At least that’s what you told yourself. You gave Ethan a reassuring smile, “Now can we please just enjoy the day, it is the 4th after all.”
“Yes, you’re right. guess it’s time to be patriotic eh?”
“eh? really. wasn’t Canada day on the 1st?”
“Yep, but you Americans take patriotism to a whoooole other level.” He teased.
Meanwhile Mark and Luke are having a somewhat serious conversation on the dock. They're too far away to hear but their body language is telling. Luke had his back to you but you could tell he was passionate about whatever they were talking about because he was using his hands a lot. Mark seemed uneasy, stressed and confused, as he paced the dock rubbing his hands through his hair listening to Luke talk. A few minutes later they joined you and Ethan, as well as the other boys who had slowly congregated.
“Ready to go out on the boat?” Luke asked and the boys all jumped up and ran down to the dock. You and Luke walked behind the crowd.
“Are you okay?” You asked shyly, not knowing if it was your place to do so anymore.
“Yeah I'm good, why?”
“You and Mark just looked like you were talking about something kinda serious is all.”
“Oh yeah… but it’s okay.” he smiles at you. You didn’t want to press so you left it at that.
Being out in the boat was always fun. Watching the guys wake board and go tubing was always your favourite. Listening to Dylan shriek as he was thrown off the tube was definitely the highlight of the day. After the boat, you all had a BBQ while waiting for it to be dark enough for fireworks. The night ended with a fire of course. The boys were going on about some incident that had occurred during the season and you were too tired to contribute so you excused yourself to get ready for bed. You crawled under the covers, trying to get comfy. You had never slept in this bed without Luke, so you tossed and turned for a while before a knock on your door shifted your attention.
“Y/n/n?” Luke popped his head around the door, though it was too dark to see him fully.
“Lukey?” Luke approaches your bed, and you sit up. “What's up?”
“You can say no, but can I sleep here,” he hesitated, “one last time?”
You shifted over so he could lay down, his warmth instantly filling the void. You cuddled into him, one last time, taking in the moment so it will last in your memory. You held back your tears, because you didn't want Luke to think this was upsetting you, but little did you know he was also holding back tears. This was your official goodbye. It was equally as hard as that day in the tunnel but at least the confusion was settled.
Your junior year was a blur. Frankly, you couldn't recall a single moment that happened other than how supportive Mark and Ethan were. You tried your best to not be depressed around them, but at this point they knew you too well and did everything they could to cheer you up.
“vanilla latte?” Mark smiles, stretching his arm out, coffee in hand.
“aw thanks mark! This is exactly what I needed. That class was brutal”
“The first class of the day is always the worst.” mark jokes, sitting down beside you. “I thought you could use a little pick me up.”
Mark got you a lot of coffee that year, a lot of morning lattes and seasonal drinks. Ethan on the other hand was more of your go to person when you needed to rant, mainly because he gave you such great advice.
“ethan…” you say slowly sliding your phone over towards him. “what do i say? Why is he messaging me?” Ethan read the message that was on the screen.
“just take a breath y/n, he’s just checking in.”
“Ethan, Luke never texted me before asking me how I was? Why would he do it now when we’re broken up? Is he gonna drop the worst news on me or something?”
“Slow down!” Ethan gently grabs your arm, stopping you from completely spiralling out. “Before he wouldn’t have to text you, you were together 24/7. He's just checking in to see how your semester is going. It's not the first time he has, he knows how difficult your course load is.”
“yeah i guess that’s right. sorry for freaking out.”
“never apologize. That's what friends are for.”
You had gone home after the school year was over, hoping your parents would be happy to have you home but instead they treated you like you didn’t exist. The only time you weren’t invisible to them was when they needed a favour. After helping them they’d go right back to looking past you, speaking over you and ignoring everything you say. you were falling apart after this year, literally right before their eyes and they didn’t care, but they’ve never cared. Luke's the only one who has truly ever cared, and saw you for you. the only one who’s shown up in difficult times but also in the happy times. you were naive to think that wasn’t love- but to you loving someone was saying those 3 little words and he never said them. But you never really let him, did you?
you were laying in bed, listening to rain gently tap against your window when your phone rang, breaking your daze.
incoming call- Eddy 🤠
you pick up, ethan speaking before you could even say hello.
“Miss me yet?” he laughed
“Ethan, I'm going crazy in this house.” you sighed.
“i know it’s tough there, but what do you say about a weekend away?”
“Yes please, when and where?”
he paused.
“luke’s… and next weekend.”
“Why did you pause?” you questioned. Everyone knew you ended on good terms so why the hesitation.
“not a bad pause, but y/n, you can’t tell me that you and luke breaking up didn’t play into how you were all year.” Ethan was never afraid to call you out and point out the hard truth. He was right. you were depressed this whole year. you had lots of excuses but always buried the truth; you missed luke.
“We're good. Luke and I have chatted a few times so it’s not awkward between us. It'll be nice to see everyone again.”
“Okay cool, did you want Mark to drive you? I'm not coming back until Friday.”
“Yeah, that would be great. thanks eddy.”
The week flew by and before you knew it, Mark was standing in your door frame watching you frantically pack.
“it’s 3 days y/n you don’t need your whole closet.” he impatiently joked.
“You never know what the weather may be like, Markie, I'll be 2 more minutes just need to pack my tooth brush and skincare.”
Mark grabbed your bags and threw them into his back seat. The drive was nice, you never really spent much time with Mark one on one but you really wanted to thank him for looking out for you this past year.
“mark?”
“mhmm” he nonchalantly responded.
“i just wanted to say thank you for this past year. all those coffees and little pick me ups were so thoughtful.”
“I was just trying to help,” he smiled.
“Well, I really appreciate it.”
You got to the lake house and there were way more people than you were expecting. It was double the amount of teammates, past and present, and equally as many girls. You could feel a bit of anxiety creep up and sit like a lump in the back of your throat. you looked around hoping to find Eddy but he found you first, making his way over to give you a hug.
“Ahh come here,” he grinned, pulling you in for a bear hug, “missed ya!”
“Missed you too Eddy.” you smiled.
“Geez i didn’t get a hug!” Mark teased pulling you away from Ethan, giving you a big side hug.
“Hey guys!” Luke waves, sauntering over to the 3 of you. “glad you could come” he says directly to you.
“Yeah, thanks for hosting.” you smile. Luke leans in and gives you a hug. Your face pressed into his chest, his cologne overpowering your smell. For a second you swore you could hear his heart skip a beat but you just embraced the moment, memories of the two of you flooding your mind.
That night, after a long day of drinking and games, the group of you crowded around the fire. For a moment there was a lull in the conversation which sparked one of the girls to suggest playing truth or dare.
“Really? we’re not 5.” Dylan rolled his eyes. Luke giggled at his repose, clearly feeling the effects of the alcohol.
“Yes Duker, it’ll be fun! I have an app for it so you don't even have to think about what you’re going to ask.”
“Fine, I'll go first.” He reluctantly took the girl's phone and asked her the truth or dare. A few rounds, mostly of dares, had passed and a different girl turned her full attention to Luke.
“Luke, truth or dare?”
“Let's go with truth, switch things up.”
“Ouu i like it. Okay truth: have you ever been in love?”
“Yes.” he says without any hesitation, his gaze fixed on you. “And I regret not telling her.”
You sat there in complete silence, shocked at the words that just left your exes mouth. An awkward tension fell on the whole group. Tears began to fill your eyes and you stormed away from the fire. Luke was quick to follow you, stumbling over his feet trying to catch up.
“y/n” he called but you didn’t turn around. “y/n/n” he grabbed your arm stopping you from going any further.
“What was that Luke?” you say just above a whisper, your voice cracking under the stress.
“I love you.” you shake your head no over and over.
“no luke, i can’t do this” you pull your arm away and turn from him, but aren’t able to move before he turns you back around. You can’t lift your gaze from the ground.
“y/n please look at me,” you lift your head up.” i’m sorry, but i’m just being honest” your face falls in defeat.
“Luke, why are you waiting til a year after we broke up to tell me this?”
“be- because,” he stuttered. “because you told me if i couldn’t show you then you didn’t want to hear it.”
“Then why did you break up with me?”
“cause i couldn’t show you if I was living in Jersey and you were still here.”
“Why didn’t you tell me when we were dating?”
“You told me you never wanted me to say I love you so I didn't. So why are you upset?” He said a little harsher than he meant.
“You know why Luke.” you yell back.
“no y/n, i don’t know! you just repeated actions are louder than words and all that bullshit!” Luke’s passion was coming across as anger, which made you take a step back. You'd never seen this from him before.
“Can you please stop yelling?” you sob. Luke didn’t realize how loud he was being, and how triggering it was for you.
“I'm sorry, y/n/n, I didn't mean to yell. I wanted to tell you so many times. Maybe if I did we’d still be together. But you told me if I can't show you then it’s not love, and there was no way I could always show you living hours away from you.” you nod, tears hitting the ground. “I never wanted to break up y/n. you have to know that.”
“I know Luke, it’s okay.” you turn from him.
“So that's it?” He pleads. you wanted to say it back but you couldn’t. It would make things even more painful for you. So you walked away, like Luke did that day in the tunnel. you didn’t say those 3 little words because now they have too much meaning.
Mark and ethan we’re waiting nearby, waiting to check in with both you and Luke, Mark going to Luke and Ethan coming to comfort you. You turn your head into Ethan’s shoulder. “Can you take me home please?”
“yeah let’s go.” Ethan looks over and gives a nod to Mark.
“You okay buddy?” Mark asks Luke.
“not really.” Luke rubs his hand against his jaw, wondering how that turn of events happened. “i didn’t think me saying that would have upset her that bad. I guess now I know why she didn’t want me to say it, cause she would freak out.”
“i think it’s a bit more than that Hughes,” Mark paused, making sure you were out of ear shot, “she was not herself at all this year dude. the only times she seemed happy were when i got her the coffee orders you told me she liked. It was the only time she smiled around me. and She's been back with her parents for the last month or so, and that’s obviously not going well. I don't think she realized how much she needed you until you were gone, and didn’t know how to function without you.” Luke's expression softened, wincing at how his absence hurt you, and now his presence hurt you even more. “I told you last summer you were dumb for breaking up with her instead of telling her how much you really loved her. You had the opportunity to prove to her that the words meant something different than what she was used to. Maybe she didn’t say she loved you back, but her actions are louder than words, so take that as you want.” Mark patted Luke on the shoulder before walking up to the car where you and Ethan were waiting.
“Mark wait a sec,” Luke runs up to Mark, whispering something into his ear. Mark gives an annoyed look and then nods before getting behind the wheel.
“All good?” Ethan looks at Mark from the back seat. Mark nods again, reaching over and putting his hand on your knee to show his support as you cried into the neck of your hoodie.
You didn’t think you would feel anything when you heard him say those 3 little words, but you did. You felt this aching sense of heartbreak because you knew he meant it. He felt it. He showed it. He had been saying it in different ways all this time and you were too scared to feel or say it back. You blocked Luke on everything after that. It was too hard to see his face or receive any contact from him. You took the easy way out. Mark and Ethan were aware of your reaction and never spoke about Luke around you anymore.
Starting your senior year, you wanted to be more productive than last year and fill that void that luke left. You had been on the hockey media team for 3 years now but never felt like you ever really gave it your all, so you decided to focus all this new spare time into your creative outlets. You were really talented in making promo videos that highlighted all of the players and welcomed the new ones to the team.
“Are we good?” Ethan asked, breaking the semi-awkward silence at the kitchen table.
“Are you talking to me or Mark?” you asked not looking up from your computer.
“Obviously you.” he said bluntly, grabbing your attention. you closed your laptop and gave the boys your full attention, which made Mark drop his textbook he was studying from.
“Why wouldn’t we be?” you swallowed harshly, knowing Ethan had the right to ask that, and that he was on to something. Senior year was meant to be about making memories, and last chances to do things with your favourite people. reality was, you were a bit cold towards them ever since that night at the lake house. It was unintentional, but if you were aware of it, you knew damn well Ethan was.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t we be good?” Mark asked innocently. Ethan gave Mark a blank stare before raising his eyebrows, like he was speaking in code. “oh yeah…” Mark says above a whisper looking back towards you.
“You're going to need to give me some context here guys.”
“Okay i’m just gonna come out and say it. Ever since the lake house, you’ve cut us off. maybe it’s unintentional cause we know you were hurt that day, but that wasn’t our fault.” Ethan pauses, reading the saddened look on your face. “we just miss how things were y/n/n. you used to come to us for everything, and we feel like we never speak to you unless you ask us to do something for the media team.” You could tell Ethan was hurt, which made you feel super shitty.
“I know I've been distant.” you sigh. “I guess I just kinda shut off after that all went down. and you guys are still close with luke so i don’t want to hinder that in any way.”
“y/n we can be friends with you and Luke separately.” Ethan responded. You knew that they could, but part of you kind of resented them for still being friends with him even though there was no reason for them not to be. You could equally blame yourself for how things went down with Luke, but Mark and Ethan didn’t pick sides.
“Yeah y/n, i feel like you haven’t even told us anything that’s going on in your life in the last few months. it’s almost november and all i know is that you’re really good at making me look good in your promos.” Mark teased which caused you to let out a little laugh; he never failed to do that.
“I guess that’s all I've really done though. I've been really focused on media for the team, and haven't really gone out much.”
“Well you should go out more!” Mark says passionately. “y/n, last year you didn’t do anything and now you’re still not really doing anything for yourself, no offence-“
“none taken?”
“- and it’s senior year! time to do something crazy, go to all the parties, make lots of memories!”
“i have to say I agree with Mark.” Ethan smiled. “what do you say, party this friday?”
You hesitated, “i can’t this friday, but maybe next weekend?” Before Ethan or Mark could respond, you lied to them. “I told my mom I'd come help her around the house, and you know what she's like.”
“Okay, next weekend it is then.” Mark said with a big grin on his face. you smiled back but hated that you just lied to them. You weren’t going home, you had no intentions of ever returning home. You were going on a date.
You kept your new boy, Liam, on the down low. Mostly because you were wanting something lowkey, but also because you didn’t want Ethan and Mark to ask you questions about it. They knew you so well and knew that part of you will never get over Luke. As time went on you and Liam became pretty close, but you always managed to keep things surface level. Over christmas break you didn’t see him because you didn’t want him to meet your family or vice versa.
Early into second semester, you went out for brunch with Mark. this was a birthday tradition you had done since first year, usually the other boys accompanied, however today was just the two of you.
“How was your christmas?” he asked
“Pretty good, yours?
“Pretty good? I thought you hated going home?” Mark chuckled.
“Yeah I normally do, but this time was more chill than usual.”
“That’s good.” Mark smiled, turning his attention to the person walking past your table. It was Liam. Liam sat at a table somewhat close to you and Mark; a table where he didn’t have a perfect view of the two of you but could mostly hear what you were talking about. you shoot a confused look over to him while he looks back a bit jealous.
Your waitress approached your table, your trance lingering.
“She’ll take a vanilla latte? or are you still in your festive hot chocolate mood?” Mark answered for you.
“Yes sorry, a vanilla latte would be amazing.” you smile at her. Mark smiled at her as well and you both ordered your food.
“You good?” he asked.
“Oh yeah, just got distracted. Sorry about that.”
Yours and Mark’s conversation continued, and it was nice to have some one on one time with him. Part of you felt guilty for being so distant during the first semester, especially where this is your senior year. you really took it for granted that he was just always around, the friendly giant that would do anything for you. as you finished up, Liam walked past your table and gave a condescending look.
“Do you know him?” Mark asked, confused at the hostility. You swallowed hard, but you lied to him.
“He looks familiar but I don’t know him.” you spit you. you just sat with mark for the last hour and a half and never once mentioned you were seeing someone; bringing it up this way would be wrong.
You and Mark parted ways and you noticed Liam still sitting in his car. You cautiously walk up to the passenger side, the door unlocking as you approached.
“Everything okay?” You ask, confused at the behaviour being shown.
“Who’s that?”
“Mark.” you respond back plainly.
“I see. are you dating him?” he asked discouraged.
“Last i checked I was dating you.” you teased back, slightly regretting the hole you started digging. His eyebrows raised, a small smirk turning the corners of his mouth upwards.
“Oh we’re dating now? So why were you with Matt?” he teased.
“It’s Mark, don’t be dumb. Mark has been my friend since freshman year, we always go out for brunch for his birthday. Usually a group of us go but Ethan was sick and the rest are off living their hockey dreams.” you say sarcastically.
“oh Mark and Ethan, your hockey pals. I actually remember you told me about them now. Why didn’t you introduce me to Mark if we’re dating?” you hesitated. You really didn’t have a good reason not to, besides Mark would tell Ethan and then the two of them would interrogate you and make you question all of your decisions.
“Well you didn’t come say hi, otherwise I would have introduced you.” Liam gave you a skeptical look. “But I'll introduce you to them soon! They’re probably my closest two friends so it’d be nice to have a formal introduction.” you smiled, easing Liam’s look. Little did he know that you’d come up with every excuse to not introduce them. You also came up with a lot of excuses on why you couldn’t go out in public with Liam. If anyone had asked Liam about you he’d probably say you’re the biggest introvert, you’re scared don’t go out when it’s dark outside and don’t like eating out cause it hurts your tummy; none of which was true when you were with Luke.
Leading up to Valentine’s day, Liam was desperately trying to convince you to let him take you on an official date. Thankfully you didn’t have to come up with an excuse to not go out because senior night was the day after valentines. You were in charge of making all the content leading up to the game as well as the game day coverage. In a way this was also your senior night. you had been a part of the team as long as Mark and Ethan, obviously in a different capacity, but thinking about how great your friends have been the last 4 years, you wanted to make the night extra special.
The game was thrilling, with Michigan winning in the shootout against Minnesota. You got a bit emotional watching Ethan and Mark, skate their “final lap”. memories flashed before your eyes, mostly good ones but then you remembered that frozen 4 game where your heart was broken.
“y/n?” a familiar voice called from the tunnel. You turn around and see Luke. A soft smile spread across his face and his hair was perfectly peaking out from under his hat. For a minute you couldn’t contain your reaction and you smiled back, shocked to see him. Realizing you were smiling, you quickly bite your lip and looked away overwhelmed in emotion. He approached you, extending his arm out, passing you the most beautiful yet delicate bouquet with dahlias, daisies and cosmos. you pulled out the little card that said “Watching you chase your dreams has always been something special. Wishing you a night as bright and golden as your favorite color. Proud of you- Luke”
Tears welled up in your eyes. Proud of you. That was something you told Luke often, maybe your choice of 3 little words as they held just as much power to Luke. He needed to hear that a lot during his time at umich while under all of the pressure and you made sure he never went a game or day without hearing it. You collected yourself before looking up at Luke, whose eyes were plastered to you, examining every inch of you.
“Why?” was all you managed to croak out before looking away again. Luke blinked hard, trying to push away any tears that may have been forming.
“Because, this is your night too and I-I-I really fucked up and i’m sorry.” he said sincerely, voice cracking from the stress he was under. He knew this gesture was a huge risk. You looked at Luke, your bottom lip quivering but the corners of your mouth turned upward.
“Wow,” you laughed nervously, “these are really beautiful Lukey.” You say just about a whisper, now fully smiling with a few tears escaping your eyes. Luke let out a breathy laugh of relief. Mark and Ethan walk up behind their friend, greeting him with hugs. “You guys knew he was coming?”
“I didn't until before the game!” Ethan said.
“Yeah i knew a bit longer, but only like since the other day.” Mark smiled before a puzzled look appeared on his face. You turned around to see what he was looking at, shocked at the sight of Liam walking towards you with a bouquet of pink roses. Your jaw dropped as Luke’s clenched. Liam approaches, sticking his arm to shake Mark’s hand.
“You must be Mark! y/n was telling me about you.”
“Oh really. cause y/n hasn’t told me about you.” he said bluntly, not extending his arm out in return.
A heat began to spread up your neck and across your cheeks. This is the worst possible situation.
“y/n you care to introduce your friend here?” Mark hissed, clearly pissed about the situation, maybe even showing a bit of how Luke was feeling.
“This is Liam.” you say shyly.
“I'm y/n’s boyfriend.” he says proudly. Mark scoffs at the statement. Ethan just raised his eyebrows without showing any other emotion and Luke had the same look he had that day after the frozen 4 loss. Luke turned away and began to walk down the tunnel, Mark following closely behind.
“Luke.” you called out, but he didn’t turn around. You turned to Ethan with a panicked look on your face.
“I can’t tell you what to do y/n, I’ve been there for you through everything and you didn’t have the decency to tell me you were seeing someone?”
“I-“ you couldn’t find any words to respond. Ethan turned around and caught up with Mark and Luke who were chatting low enough that you couldn’t hear them but you knew it wasn’t good. Marks movements were heated, like he was trying to justify himself. You slowly walked up to them, Mark's back towards you.
“Bro I had no idea she was seeing someone. Never once did she show any signs. and get this! When we went out last month for brunch, he walked past us and- and I asked her if she knew him and she just said he looked familiar. she fucking lied to my face! I would have told you instead of keeping tabs on her and letting you know how she was doing all this time.” Luke's eyes got wide as he realized you over heard what Mark just confessed. Mark turned to face you. “Why did you lie to me?”
“Why did I lie? Why did you spy on me?”
“Spy on you?” Mark laughed.
“Yeah-“ you cut him off, tears pouring down your face. “Have you told Luke every little thing I’ve said or done this year?”
“No. Actually, I would tell Luke how you were feeling and he would tell me how to comfort you. He’d tell me what coffee orders to get, snacks, and literally anything else I've done to help you since he’s left. It was all Luke telling me what to do.”
You looked at Luke, tears pouring down your face. After all this time, he still cared, he wanted to make sure you were taken care of, he still loved you. Mark walked away angry.
“Ethan, is this all true?” you sob.
“How else did you think we knew every thing?.” he answered softly. “And for the record, Mark didn’t just do that for Luke. We care y/n and we’re really hurt that you’ve lied to us and been really distant this year.” He sighed and walked away to check on Mark, leaving you alone with Luke.
“Luke please say something.”
“He doesn’t-“ he paused, biting the inside of his cheek, “I don’t -“ he can’t get the words out. He shakes his head looking down at the ground.
“Luke?” you gasp.
“You hate roses.” Was all he managed to croak out. He turned around, head hung in defeat and met up with his friends. Ethan gave him a pat on the back as they walked away leaving you alone in the tunnel, again.

words: 3.2k
warnings: 18+, smut!! (lowkey i didn't have plans to write smut in, but it kind of came naturally as i wrote this?? so obviously skip over it if ur not comfortable reading it!), p in v (protected!!), slight fingering, making out
author's note: hiii!!! i'm back (sort of?) from my unintentional hiatus that made me fall off the face of the earth for 3 months. i've been crazy busy with school this semester with it being my senior year, so i had to kind of push my au's to the side to keep up with work, BUT i am hoping to be back more regularly soon!!! i've seen the inbox messages and i love them and u for checking in. i am well!! i wrote this to try and get out of the slump and make a small comeback so people knew i wasn't dead lol.
au masterlist
the morning started off in san jose at about 7 when will's alarm went off to get him up for 9am skate. preseason was around the corner and the ice was opening up as players slowly trickled back to san jose or geared up for another season ahead before the actual practices started. it wasn't mandatory, but will forced himself to think it was or else he'd never go and just lay in bed all day. he needed to go if he wanted to get stronger this season.
the blonde rolled over, blindly tapping around on his phone until the noise finally stopped and his room quieted again with the still morning. to his left, samy mumbled something in her half asleep daze as she felt her boyfriend shuffle around. "baby, it's so early," she grumbled. this made will chuckle as he turned to his side and shifted her into him. she moved instinctively into his arms, her breath fanning his neck and little snores escaping her lips.
the hockey player's heart clenched. this was one of the only reasons he'd skip morning skate so samy could continue sleeping in his arms and he could feel every inch of her against him as they tangled together under the blankets. he couldn't though. he promised mack he'd go. fuck.
he already cancelled on the younger boy twice and he'd be a shitty friend if he made it a third. at this rate, mack was probably up already and ready to go 2 hours early.
"i know, i'm sorry. i got morning skate in two hours," will mumbled, his one arm stroking her back. her sleep shirt—his shirt more specifically—had ridden up and exposed some of her skin across her lower back. will's fingers found their place there and created little shapes to soothe samy back to sleep.
"since when do you go to morning skate before preseason?" well, she got him there. she knew him too well to know that will normally never went even if he said he was going to make it a habit to go. the boy flushed.
"i promised mack i'd go. 'm sorry," will pressed a gentle kiss into the top of her hair. she folded in closer to him like she was cold and needed all of his body heat.
things like that made it impossible for the blonde to get out of bed. he was so warm laying with samy in the dark with the sun that had started rising and the morning birds chirping out his window. "if i lay on top of you, can i keep you from leaving?" her voice was lost against his shoulder. will couldn't help the rumble of laughter in his chest.
"you can keep me for.." he craned his neck to see the time on the clock on his nightstand. "another half hour before i gotta get up."
"not long enough. need you here. thought you were gonna sleep in with me anyway?" even though samy's eyes weren't open or her face visible, she was obviously awake now. will felt bad. he was hoping he wouldn't wake her up and would come back before she even properly processed it was morning.
"i would skip again, but i already bailed on mack twice. i can't ditch him for a third time," will explained.
"he wouldn't care. it's mack." samy protested before continuing, "i'm kidding. you're a good friend. you said half an hour though, so i am keeping you here until 7:30. 7:45 at the latest."
the sharks player felt a blush rise to his cheeks. he would accept that fate. he threw his arm tighter around her waist so there was zero space left between them. his hand caressed across her thigh until he hooked it under her leg and pulled it over his hip. in the dark that his eyes finally adjusted to, he could make out the outline and small features of samy's face. she was smiling as will basically manhandled her around until he was satisfied.
"you know what day it is?" she mumbled. will couldn't even ask because samy kept talking, "july 27th."
will stilled, but not because he forgot. he knew it was the 27th. he knew what that meant. he didn't forget because he literally had samy's gifts hidden deep in his closet. it was just shocking to hear her say it so early in the morning when his brain hadn't even processed anything remotely coherent. he also couldn't believe it was the 27th already.
"the 27th. happy two years, baby," will finally responded, a now loopy, loving grin on his lips.
samy finally pulled her head up so the boy could see her properly. her entire expression was sleep ridden, but her smile was the most happy thing will's ever seen. he squeezed her waist where his hand rested. "happy two years, will. how'd it go so fast?" she giggled.
"i have no idea, but i do know i haven't stopped loving you in those two years. i loved you way before that actually. you've made everything so special," will was getting sappy. the girl's insides fizzled with so much love for the boy inches away from her. she had no idea how she got so lucky with him.
sometimes samy thought back to when she was a little girl and one of her biggest concerns at 5 years old was if she was going to find her prince. she would ask her mom and her mom always reassure her, but sometimes samy didn't know if she really would. she had high standards after growing up with 3 brothers and will couldn't have been more perfect. she definitely found her prince within him.
he cared for her. he paid for her. he encouraged her to do things for herself and advocate for herself. he was perfect. before the fame, before the money, before all of this and the life will was living now, samy always saw him for who he was. the caring boy who never left her side. two years later, he he still was that for her.
"i've loved you since i could remember. thanks for being the prince i dreamed about when i was five," samy hummed and will swore he felt his heart skip a beat.
"your prince?" he cheesed. he hadn't heard that one before. the brunette smiled though and softly nodded as she reached her hand up to drag through his messy curls. "yeah, my prince. you've fulfilled and checked every box of mine."
the hockey player burned all over. it was such a silly phrase, but something about it made will feel so weak. he knew he had a lot of people that cared about him and loved him, but nothing could compare to this and samy's love. her gentle fingers running through his hair, her legs tangled with his, his heart hammering against his chest because everything about this was so intimate and raw. she loved him so fully and so unapologetically. never once did she turn away from him when he didn't do well at a game or got down on himself about his playing.
and never once did will turn away from her when she was struggling with herself and her confidence. never once did he doubt her playing abilities or ever compared her to her brothers.
"what are you thinking about?" samy gently traced her finger across his face. the boy hummed, tightening his hold on her thigh, "you. always you."
"i'm thinking about you too. always thinking about you," samy responded and will snuggled in closer so their noses brushed up against one another and their lips were inches apart.
"i'm so grateful to have gotten to spend life with you," there was a slight pause before the couple's lips connected without much thought.
it was so natural as samy's fingers tightened around will's curls and he kissed her like it was the last thing he was going to do. beneath the covers, his hand slid past her thigh to her hip where he adjusted her further and samy's core brushed against will's half hard bulge. a soft grunt escaped the boy's lips, but their lips didn't break yet. they were so lost in one another and the urge to be so close that they could've been inside each other's skin.
finally, samy pulled back, her heavy breath mixing with will's. he wore a loving smile, their chests rising and falling in sync. "i wish i didn't have to leave," the boy mumbled. he craned his neck to look at the time again. 7:25.
"then don't," samy said but will shook his head. as much as he wanted to stay, he needed to go. it was only for two hours anyway. he'd be back by 11:30.
"i wish, i wish. i can't flake on mack again. he'd like probably start hating me," will chuckled lowly. the younger player wouldn't, but will did not want to be a friend that ditched like that. he expected samy to be disappointed, but she just smiled and gently traced her finger across his shoulder.
"hey, i get it. you're a good friend and i admire that. i'll be here waiting for you when you come back," her finger dipped towards his bare chest. will breathed out slowly, struggling to take his eyes off of her. "you make this so hard," he muttered.
"what? you?" a quick flick to his eyes and then back to his chest and she was smirking. what a fucking tease. will swallowed and hoped she couldn't feel him grow harder, but she most definitely did because they were pressed so close together. "fuck," the hockey player groaned.
samy lifted her head to look at the time. 7:29. "you have 16 minutes until i told you i'd let you get up." she was basically tempting him at this point.
"are you suggesting i should do something?"
the soccer player shrugged. her finger was now tracing his abs and in the crevices of the defined muscle. will shuddered a bit and breathed out again. "i don't know. am i?"
will couldn't hold himself back anymore. he captured her lips in another desperate kiss. the girl moaned into his mouth when their cores connected and she could feel how hard he was when he rubbed into her own sensitive area. he rolled her onto her back so now he hovered above her. samy wrapped her legs around the back of his thighs, pulling him in. will dropped his head into the crook of her neck, his lips taking over as he sucked hickey's and samy moaned out.
"fuck, will," she tugged harder on his curls while her other hand dug into the flesh on his back. will was basically immune to this pain now and it almost immediately sparked more pleasure through his system.
"i hope you're wet because i only have.." his eyes glanced at the clock, "12 minutes now."
"oh don't worry, i soaked my underwear the minute you pulled me into you," samy giggled and will's heart skipped another beat. the effect they still had on one another two years later was so hot in his mind.
he reached his hand down to her pussy and sure enough, will could feel the wetness soaked through her thong. a rough moan escaped his lips. "fuck, i can't believe you're this wet already."
"says you. you're throbbing and we haven't even done anything," samy mumbled, her back arching and pressing against will's chest as he moved the fabric aside to run his fingers through her folds.
he captured her lips again. there was no time for foreplay right now, but he promised he'd take real good care of her later when they weren't crunched for time. will slid his pajama bottoms and underwear down in one go. the brunette moaned into his neck where she felt him slide through her pussy. will searched his nightstand for a condom and thanked the god above for having one in there still. samy watched as he slid it over his cock and pumped himself a few times. she loved how his face contorted into pleasure and how desperate he was when they'd hardly touched each other.
"9 minutes," samy hummed as will moved back into her space and lined himself up with her entrance. "i can do it in 5," he mumbled and then he was in and they both moaned out.
samy threw her head back as she felt him fill her up inch by inch. it'd been so long that the initial pain hurt before the pleasure took over. she gripped his biceps to steady herself and will stopped when he was bottomed out to give her a second to adjust. he wasn't any better though. his cock ached and her walls were squeezing every ounce of control out of him.
"shit, baby. you feel so fucking good," will caressed her cheek. she looked at him, the look of pain slowly morphing into pleasure. "you okay?"
"i'm good. promise. you can move," she nodded. the blonde started slow as his hips gently rocked in and out of her pussy. samy hissed in pleasure, her nails digging harshly into his back that the guys would definitely chirp at him about. "god, will. fuck. i-i forgot how big you are."
will's ego inflated. it always did whenever his girlfriend said stuff like that to him. he started moving his hips faster, breathy moans escaping his lips. "taking me so well, baby. this okay?"
samy sucked in a sharp breath when will hit deep. she nodded, eyes squeezing shut for a second. "holy shit. y-yeah. yeah. this is good. more than okay."
the pleasure was overwhelming both of them. will hips picked up speed and he could feel his release tightening in his stomach. samy wasn't too far behind him as she moaned into his ear about how close she was too. her sounds were like music to the boy's ears. they always went straight to his dick which only pushed will closer to his climax.
"'m so close, baby. so fucking close. keep going. don't stop," samy cried out. will reached down to help her out, his finger rubbing her clit in hopes that she'd finish before him.
"i got you, baby. i got you," he mumbled.
samy arched into him and it was enough to get her there. her nails dug so deep that it drew blood and the best moan will's ever heard fell from her lips as she released all her his cock and fingers. will wasn't far either. his hips were moving so fast and so harshly. "fuck, i'm close."
"that's it, baby. come for me," samy encouraged, using the last bit of her energy to clench around him.
the hockey player's hips stuttered and it all came undone rather quickly. he moaned out and spilled into the condom with sharp snaps of his hips. "oh fuck. fuck. oh my god," will dropped his head into the crook of her neck. he forgot what this felt like after having only his hand for the last few weeks.
samy held onto them tightly as they slowly came down from their highs. the room felt significantly warmer and smelled like sex now. "fuck, baby. that was so fucking good. i love you so much," will mumbled, lifting his head to press soft kisses across her face.
"i love you," she looked at the time. 7:43. "two minutes to spare," they both laughed.
"fuck, i don't know how i'm supposed to go to morning skate now. gonna be thinking about this and you all morning."
"just think how you'll have me all to myself when you get back," samy wasn't helping. will groaned. how could he leave her for two hours and think about fucking hockey after he just had the best quickie of his life where he probably would be hard the entire time because he couldn't stop thinking about it.
"you're not helping," the boy groaned. he finally found it in himself to slowly pull out and dispose of the condom in the trash. he went to the bathroom to get a towel to clean them up.
when he walked back into the bedroom to the sight of samy on his pillows and glowing from what they'd just done, will swore he felt himself harden again. he was so easy because one look and he was fucking throbbing.
he cleaned her up though. his touch was so gentle and so were the tiny kisses he left across her body. samy smiled up at him as she curled into the blankets to keep warm. "have fun. tell mack i said hi."
"i will. i'll tell him how mean he is for keeping me from you."
she watched her boyfriend get himself ready. he was quick with sliding sweatpants on and finding a compression shirt to wear under his sweatshirt. she admired the red marks along his back and secretly hoped he'd get chirped at because then everyone would know. will disappeared into the bathroom to brush his teeth and comb his hair and it wasn't hard for samy to get sleepy again. the smell of will on the pillows and in the sheets was enough to lull her eyes closed as if he was right next to her.
when will came back out of the bathroom samy was basically out again. he smiled to himself and silently packed his bag before leaning down to kiss her forehead. "i love you. i'll be back soon."
she mumbled something incoherent, but will didn't wake her up to ask. he admired her for one last second before hurrying out of the room to make coffee and get on the road to the rink.
sure enough, mack's car was in the parking lot already when will got there. he parked next to his friend and hurried inside back to the locker rooms. will nodded to the workers and when he pushed the locker room door open, he saw mack at their usual bench along with a few older players who nodded his way.
"well look who finally decided to show up," the brunette teased.
"very funny. i told you i wouldn't ditch."
"i thought you would with samy in town. i'm impressed," mack grinned. will rolled his eyes slightly as he put his bag down and got his things to change.
he pulled his sweatshirt off, but he must've not noticed his shirt underneath coming up with it until his friend immediately broke out into laughter. "holy shit, i fucking knew it. you got it good," mack pointed out the marks on will's back.
the blonde's cheeks burned as he quickly pulled his shirt down. "fuck off."
"this looks fresh. did you do it this morning or something?" when will didn't answer mack's surprise continued. "holy shit, smitty. damn. was it like christmas or something?"
"it's our two years," will said and it quickly clicked for mack.
"oh my god. that's right. you know what, hell yeah. bright and early is the way to go," mack teased.
will couldn't find it in himself to be embarrassed. he got over that a long time ago. he'd wear those marks proudly if he could.
him and mack got on the ice ten minutes later and sure enough, samy was the only thing on will's mind for the next two hours as they ran drills and tried new plays.
You felt the blankets shift as Luke’s body readjusted next to you, the weight of his body on the mattress moved before he pressed a kiss to your forehead,
“Good morning baby,” He said softly, “Gonna make your coffee for you.”
You hummed quietly in response, still fighting your body to stay asleep. You could hear a little chuckle escape from Luke in reaction before hearing him get out of your bed.
You shuffled underneath your comforter, snuggling closer towards the pillow Luke used for the night — inhaling his scent that imprinted into the material. A mix of his cologne, your shampoo that he had used the night before, and the indescribable smell of him. The same comforting scent of the tall hockey defensemen woven into the white pillow case.
You cracked an eye open to see Luke shuffling his shorts back onto his body, and peering over his shoulder to catch you staring at his muscular back and arms. He gave you a quick wink before exiting your bedroom door and heading towards the kitchen. You sighed as the door thudded shut, knowing that you’re likely awake for the day and would not be getting any more sleep.
“What the fuck?!” Luke’s voice exclaimed from down the hall, causing you to sit up immediately. Your legs swung over the edge of your bed as you quickly slipped on Luke’s tshirt that was large on your frame. You opened your door and walked towards where Luke was.
He stood next to the kitchen island, staring at the floor, “Why the fuck are Luca and Rut asleep in your kitchen?” Luke asked, pointing at the ground.
You made your way around the kitchen island to in fact see Luca sprawled out on the small carpet in your kitchen and Rutger curled up next to the fridge.
“How did they get in?” You added before an undeniable giggle left your lips, “And why does Fants only have one shoe on?”
Luke shook his head lowly, in disbelief but also in amusement at his team mates state, “Oh man, they must’ve had a wild night out.”
“Well they definitely seem comfy and dead asleep,” You chuckled to yourself as you made your way back to your room, “I’m texting the group to let them know that both of them are here.”
You could feel Luke right behind you before his hands clasped on your hips and his foot gently kicked the door shut, “Wanna go get breakfast at some cafe instead? It doesn’t seem like Tils and Rut are planning on moving anytime soon.”
You craned your neck to press a kiss on his bare shoulder, “That sounds perfect.”
“Plus, they’re going to have a field day if they see me here with their own eyes,” Luke whispered into your ear before kissing the spot right under it, causing your stomach to erupt with butterflies, “And I want to be the only one who sees you like this.”
His fingers tugged at the bottom of your (his) shirt, hinting at the fact that it was the only thing you were wearing that was covering your body. Heat rose to your cheeks as you swatted his hand away, “Then I’m sure you don’t want them to hear you either, right?”
Luke playfully rolled his eyes, “Alright, let’s get going then.”
Hey girl can I please request Ethan Edwards x reader where they recently got married, and reader finds out she is pregnant and so nervous to tell Ethan cause they are so young but when she does tell him he is so excited! Thank you!
𓂃 𓈒𓏸 baby - ee⁷³
swooning over this. also our boy got called up who cheered!!!
warnings: obviously mentions of pregnancy + its symptoms, swearing
there needed to be a reason behind your sudden indisposition. you’d thought about a stomach bug, maybe food poisoning, anything that would’ve explained why you felt so sick all the time. you didn’t even bother telling ethan.
yet, the signals kept adding up: constant tiredness, nausea, headaches and, on top of that, an irregularity with your menstrual schedule. you avoid thinking about the obvious option for the first week, convincing yourself it must had just been stress. but as the weeks progressed, and so did your symptomatology, it became clear that you needed to do something about it and remove all doubt.
you’d left the house earlier than usual, greeting ethan with the usual kiss before you closed the front door behind yourself, not even thinking of mentioning what you’d been dealing with. you’d gotten to the nearest pharmacy, gotten the feared pregnancy test and shoved it in your bag, going on about your day like nothing had happened.
it was only in the late afternoon, when the light went out and the streets grew colder, that you entered the house again. you were alone, and you knew you would be, with ethan being in the middle of a game. you didn’t want to, but you had to face it, and you chose to do it by yourself, locked in the bathroom.
when the result arrived, you stood in front of the sink like your soul had just exited your body.
your hands uncontrollably shook as you fiddled with the little plastic piece of plastic in your hands. you took deep breath after the other, but it was no use; your heartbeat was racing and your eyes were watering with something that did not resemble happiness.
you tried your best to rationalize it, gaze dropping to the golden band adorning your left hand. you weren’t a teenager, you hadn’t been sleeping around and unaware of how that might’ve happened. but truth be told, you didn’t know what ethan would think of it, and it was terrifying.
sure, you had talked about eventually having kids, starting your own family at your own pace after an everything but rushed wedding. you’d been a couple for years, growing up together and deciding to take the big step after a well thought out plan. this, however, wasn’t just a big step. it was a revolution, something that would’ve scrambled everything currently in your lives.
the tears spilled from your eyes before you could even attempt to stop them, pouring over the two bright pink lines of the pregnancy test between your hands.
the following hours felt draining, like your mind couldn’t shut up for a second. it was a continuous vortex of thoughts about ethan, about what it would mean for the two of you. your hands shook at the mere thought of receiving a negative reaction from him.
when he returned home from the arena, your knees almost gave out below you. you held yourself up against the kitchen counter, knuckles going white from the strength of your grip, as he paced through the hallway, with messy damp hair and a radiant smile. it was a stark contrast from your pale, droopy face, but he thankfully was yet to notice.
he circled the kitchen island and finally closed the unbearable gap between the two of you, the way he’d fantasized about throughout the entire day. as he blocked shots and uselessly tried to focus on backchecking, his mind could only picture coming back home to his wife.
“well, hey there, beautiful.”
“hi, baby.” you whispered, scared of what your own voice might’ve sounded like.
his arms wrapped around you as he stood behind you, chin resting on your shoulder and lips peppering kisses all over the side of your face. you let out a huff, with a shadow of a smile appearing on your lips for the first time that day.
“what’s up with you, honey? you look… off.” he mumbled, pressing a firmer kiss on the corner of your lips.
you attempted to gulp down the lump stuck in your throat. “nothing, everything’s fine.”
“babe, don’t do this, i can tell something’s up. it’s okay if you don’t wanna talk about it, but let me know if i can help you in any way, mh?”
you tipped your head back enough to look at ethan. your eyes met, and you saw nothing but adoration conveyed by his irises. it should’ve helped ease your nerves, but it made you even more nervous about being the bearer of something that could’ve completely altered it.
you wanted to keep it from him, get a couple more days to ponderate the right way to tell him, but you couldn’t. you’d never been able to hide anything from ethan throughout the years; if you couldn’t keep the christmas presents you bought for him a secret, how could you possibly do it with a pregnancy? an entire baby, your baby, growing inside of you?
you were doomed, and your mouth spoke before your brain could order it. “i’m pregnant.”
your body rotated in his arms, lip quivering like you could burst out into tears at any moment. ethan was quiet, with the widest set of eyes you’d ever seen. he thought he’d misheard you.
“i’m sorry, what did you say?”
your blood froze in your veins. you sighed and you a small step. ethan took the hint, hands dropping to his sides to free you from his hold and let you move freely. he watched in shock at you walking out of the room, returning after a handful of seconds that had felt like a lifetime, this time holding what looked a little too much like a pregnancy test.
he had not misheard anything.
before your trembling, sweating hands could raise the test enough for him to see it, ethan nearly jumped you. his arms engulfed you in a hug tighter than the one you exchanged on the altar, so close you could feel an elated laughter rumbling inside his chest, where your head was squished.
“holy shit, this is the best thing ever!” he just about sobbed, and you only took notice of the tears slipping from his eyes once you pulled back.
his hands held yours, finally taking the time to look at the pregnancy test between your fingers. your eyes mirrored his, filling with what now were happy tears. your head shook at the thought of the misery your own mind had put you through.
“i was so scared, ethan. i thought you… i- fuck, i don’t know what i thought. that you would be angry, or something.”
“wait, what? oh, god, no. baby, you’ve just made me the happiest man on earth. christ, we’re having a baby!”
he looked down once more, blurred sight able to focus on nothing but those two little colourful lines. he squeezed your hands, before squatting down enough to be at eye level with your belly.
he stared at it so intently, like he could see right through all the layers of flesh and tissue. the sight would’ve made you laugh, had the moment not been so deeply emotional. his hand was shaking as he rested it against your shirt, right over your womb. your own covered it, thumb caressing his knuckles as you smiled down at him.
Trying to deal with the aftermath of your boyfriend cheating on you with your best friend is hard... But it becomes a little easier when the perfect opportunity for revenge suddenly presents itself.
You were done crying over Luke Hughes. Too many tears had been shed the night you broke up, and you refused to shed anymore— even when he was glued to the side of some girl you had never seen before, barely a month after your relationship ended.
It felt impossible to stop staring at the picture. Jack was the one that posted it, Luke wouldn’t dare, not when you still followed him. Or maybe he would, everything you thought you knew about the kind of person he was had been thrown out the window weeks ago.
Jack probably didn’t even realize that Luke was in the background, sitting next to some blonde girl with his arm thrown around her. She’s halfway into his lap and you hold back the urge to scoff.
“Okay, no.” Your phone is promptly snatched from your hand, and before you can react, your best friend has quickly turned it off and slid the phone into her pocket, just out of arm's reach.
“Chelsea—” you sigh, exasperated.
“Absolutely not.” She stares you down with a look that’s eerily similar to that of a mother’s. “I will not allow you to stare at this picture and wallow in self pity while Luke Hughes is out there sticking his dick into anything that moves.”
“Don’t say his name.” You sink further into your bed, pulling up the hood of your too-big hoodie that had been stolen from your brother’s closet long ago.
“I can’t believe you still follow him, and his brothers.” Chelsea shakes her head, speaking up again before you have a chance to defend yourself. “He’s lucky I haven’t strangled him already, especially after what he did.”
The reason behind your break up still lingers, and no matter how much you wish you could forget about it, you seem to be reminded of it at every corner. At least it was summer, and you wouldn't be subjected to seeing Luke Hughes every time you walked around campus.
Your eyes drift over to the cluster of pictures that decorates the space above your desk. There are noticeable gaps, empty squares of white that stick out like a sore thumb against the colorful collage.
There had been photos there, ones of you and the girl that was supposed to be your best friend since kindergarten, ones of you and Luke throughout your relationship, until you ripped them down with tears in your eyes.
Even now it was still hard to believe that she could do that to you, that they could do that to you. It makes your body heave with exhaustion. You were so tired of feeling like this, so tired of the ache that ran rampant across your heart.
So tired of being the only one heartbroken meanwhile Luke was off in New Jersey with his brother having what seemed to be the time of his life.
The sound of running water from the bathroom stopped, and you could hear as Luke stepped out of the shower. Right as he did, a ding! From his phone caught your attention.
“Luke!” You called out, “you got a text.”
“Will you read it for me?” He asked, voice muffled from behind the door.
Without responding, you lean over from your spot on his bed, reaching for his phone that’s face down against the nightstand. The screen lights up as you turn it over. The name that pops up on the screen makes you furrow your brows. Why was she texting Luke?
You type his password in before clicking on the message. Your face drops, and you can feel your heart beating so loudly in your chest that you can’t hear Luke call out your name from behind the bathroom door.
It doesn’t register in your head the first time you read it, you have to read it a second time, and even then it's hard to believe what the words on the screen say.
“I know we’ve already talked about this and you don’t want to tell her but she deserves to know. I know you said that you guys were on a break, but it never should’ve happened. We never should’ve slept together and I feel horrible about it. So either tell her about it or I will.”
When Luke calls out your name for a second time, you hear it. He’s standing in the doorway of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist.
He scrunches his face in confusion. “What’s wrong?”
You don’t say anything, can’t bring yourself to. Instead, you stand up, phone in hand before shoving it into his chest. He stumbles, clearly taken aback by it.
Luke’s brows furrow before taking a look at what’s on his phone that has you so upset. His face drops, and then the yelling starts.
“You don’t unders—”
“I swear to God, Luke, if you try and come up with an excuse right now I’m going to slap the shit out of you.” Your jaw clenched, a futile attempt to hold back the tears that are beginning to well up and blur your vision ever so slightly.
You can’t even look at him, can’t stand the pleading look in his eyes. Though, it’s hard to tell whether he actually feels guilty about it, or if he’s just sorry he got caught. Everything you thought you knew about the kind of person he was feels different now.
“Just let me explain.”
Tears are falling down your cheeks at this point, but even now you can’t help but scoff. “Explain? Explain what?”
“How you fucked my best friend— a girl I’ve known since we were kids, and didn’t even have the decency to tell me.” The way Luke lowers his head, casting his eyes downward in shame does nothing but set you off. “Explain how I had to find out through a text?”
“Were you even going to tell me?
The question is followed by silence, which is an answer in itself. Luke won’t look at you, even though he’s the one who did it. He’s the one that made that decision, and he won’t even take accountability for it.
“When did it happen?” You ask, and it makes Luke look up at you, face scrunched in confusion, like he couldn’t possibly understand why you would want to know the details of him sleeping with another girl.
It takes him a moment to gather his words. “Uh, it was over spring break, when I was in New Jersey.”
The room goes silent as you process what he’s told you. Your voice cracks when you finally speak up again. “This happened almost two months ago?”
Luke takes a moment to respond. “We were on a break, I didn’t think it was worth mention—”
You attempt a scoff. “Just because we were on a break doesn‘t give you the right to sleep with someone else, and the fact that you didn’t think it was worth mentioning is… astounding.”
You search his face for any sign of guilt, and if it’s there you can’t seem to find it. He doesn’t say anything else. Doesn’t apologize, doesn’t beg for forgiveness, just stands and stares at you, like this whole situation is just an inconvenience for him.
The sudden urge to leave washes over you, unable to look at Luke any longer. Before you know it, you’re grabbing all of your things, but Luke is quick to try and stop you.
“Come on, don’t leave, can’t we just—” he goes to grab your arm, but you yank yourself out of his grasp, tears still streaming down your face.
“No, Luke! We can’t do anything about this, there’s no coming back from sleeping with my best friend.” Your tone is accusatory, and you can’t bring yourself to stand there any longer, not caring about anything else that could possibly come from Luke Hughes’s mouth. You’re almost to the door when you realize that there’s one more thing you want to get off your chest.
“I would’ve never done this to you.”
That was the last time you’d seen him. You’d gone straight home that night, letting Chelsea comfort you while you cried yourself to sleep. Luke brought your stuff over a few days later, per Chelsea’s request.
You refused to talk to him, even after he blew your phone up with messages, though none of them were an apology. He tried to talk Chelsea into letting him into your apartment so he could talk to you, but she was quick to slam the door in his face.
When Hailey texted you, however, you were torn. Explaining that she was upset with how you found out and that it shouldn’t have been that way. Apologizing that it ever happened in the first place. You couldn’t bring yourself to respond.
Which brings you to now, coping with the aftermath that comes from no longer having a boyfriend or a best friend in your life.
It’s two weeks before the start of your junior year, and you’re sitting on the couch watching a movie with Chelsea when you get a text. It makes you furrow your brows and you nudge Chelsea with your elbow, angling your phone so she can look at the screen.
She turns to you with a puzzled expression. “Why is Mark Estapa texting you?”
You shrug your shoulders. “I know they’re already back at school, so he must've just told them we broke up. I don’t know why Mark would be texting me about it though.”
Right as you finish your sentence, another text from him comes through, one that makes your eyebrows shoot to the sky.
Hey, sorry to hear about you and Luke.
Feel free to hit me up if you ever need anything.
The two of you turn to look at each other, Chelsea with a hand over her mouth in an attempt to stifle a laugh. No words are able to come out of your mouth when she takes your phone from you. She reads the text over again.
“Feel free to hit me up if you ever need anything?” Her mouth is agape, rereading the text once again like she can’t believe what she’s seeing. Chelsea laughs. “Oh, he wants you.”
You roll your eyes, reaching up to try and take your phone back but she holds it just out of reach. “No, he does not. He’s just being nice.”
Chelsea gives you a look. “No guy texts his homeboy’s ex after they break up just to be nice.”
The corner of your mouth quirks up, shaking your head at the girl, but the fun quickly ends when you realize she’s typing something. “Chelsea, what are you doing?”
She smirks and by the time you finally snatch your phone back to see what she’s doing, a text back has already been sent. Your jaw drops when you read what she’s written.
“I appreciate that, maybe I will, winky-face.” Your eyes went round, just completely astounded. You groaned. “Chelsea, he’s already seen it, what am I gonna do?”
“Well,” she starts, and you already know you’re not going to like what she has to say. “You could just fuck him.”
You swear your head has never whipped around so fast. “Chelsea!”
“What?” She laughs, shrugging her shoulders as if what she just said wasn’t at all out of pocket. “Come on, think about it. It’s like, the perfect way to get back at that dick.”
You sink further into the couch, glancing up to stare at your friend. “How is sleeping with one of his friends going to make this any better?”
Chelsea grins. “You wouldn’t be sleeping with just his friend, Mark’s like one of his best friends. They literally live together, could you imagine the look on Luke’s face if he saw you there with Mark?”
You cross your arms over your chest, waiting for her to keep going, but suddenly an expression crosses her face. You squinted at Chelsea, not liking the way her eyes twinkled with mischief.
“I have an idea.”
“No.”
She promptly ignores you, adjusting her seat on the couch so she’s cross legged and facing you completely. “What if you got with all of them?”
You blinked. “All of who?”
“Luke’s friends.”
An incredulous look crosses your face. “Do you know how many friends Luke has?”
Chelsea lets out an exasperated sigh. “I don’t mean like every single one of his friends, just the ones he’s really close with. You know, like Mark and the rest of their group. It would be the perfect way to get revenge.”
Suddenly, you realize exactly who she means. “They’re not going to get with their best friend’s ex-girlfriend, they wouldn’t do that to him.”
“Mark would.” Chelsea smirked. When you didn’t immediately speak up to disagree she kept going.
You open your mouth to speak up, but promptly close it, letting Chelsea continue her ramble. She did have a point, but you were still unsure. Doing this just kind of felt exactly what he did to you, and you meant what you said; that you would’ve never done that to him. You understood that the circumstances were different, of course, you and Luke were no longer together so it wasn’t exactly what he did to you.
You went back and forth in a mental debate before finally shaking your head. “I don’t think so, Chelsea. I just… at this point the last thing I want to think about is Luke. All I want to do is move on from this whole thing.”
Chelsea sighed, folding her hands in her lap. “Okay. If that’s what you want, then I won’t bring it up again.”
Reaching over, you grabbed her hand, squeezing it gently. “Thank you.”
As promised, she didn’t bring it up again for the rest of the night, and by the time you woke up in the morning, you’d almost forgotten all about it. It was around midday, though, when you found yourself scrolling on Instagram that you saw it.
You shoot straight up, elbows no longer resting on the counter top like they were previously, and for the first time since the break up you find yourself angry, rather than upset. You screenshot the picture and zoom in, making sure you’re not just seeing things.
You’re not.
You scoff, it’s a picture of Luke and some girl, his arm around her shoulders, but that’s not what has you upset. It's what she’s wearing, a necklace around her neck that’s yours. The one you were so upset about when you couldn’t find it because it meant so much to you.
You send the screenshot to Chelsea, typing out a message to go with it.
I take back what I said.
I want to get revenge.

She shouldn't be here, but she let her friends talk her into coming to the party. Hockey parties don't usually end well for her whenever she does decide to attend them.
Especially if she runs into him.
Ethan Edwards is the bane of her existence and the biggest pain in her ass. He has the biggest ego she's ever seen on a hockey player, and he's had it for all four years that she's known him. He likes to mess with her during classes they have together and distract her from keeping her solid 3.8 GPA. He likes to mess with her in passing and make jokes every time he sees her. He even makes her job as the hockey team’s social media admin very difficult and she’s growing tired of it.
Maybe she won’t even run into him. She can avoid him in his own house. It won’t be that hard with every girl throwing herself at him and distracting him from the fact that she’s there.
The hockey house is off campus in a suburban area of Ann Arbor about 15 minutes away from main campus. It’s already crawling with partygoers when she pulls up in an Uber about an hour after the party was scheduled to start. Music blasts from every open door and window and she questions how they haven’t gotten cited yet for loud noise.
Inside is so crowded she can barely walk. She squeezes past multiple athletes from different sports in the foyer as she makes her way to the kitchen to get something to drink. If she’s going to be in the same building as Ethan then she needs to have a little alcohol in her system. God knows what’s going to happen and what words are going to be exchanged if their paths cross.
In the kitchen stands three of Ethan’s closest friends. All with an arm around some girl. Luca is the first to notice her walk into the room. He immediately smiles at the sight.
"Holy shit," he laughs. "She makes an appearance. I can't believe it. I thought you would never show your face at a hockey house party."
She shrugs while she makes herself a drink with cheap vodka and a mixer. "I was coerced into coming," she tells him. She looks up at Luca, Mark, and TJ. She sips her drink. "Where's your friend? Hiding upstairs in his room hopefully?"
Mark laughs and shakes his head. "He's around," he replies. "Last I saw him, he was out back playing cup pong with Duker, Moldy and Schiffer."
"Now I can avoid the back," she says with a smile. "Thanks."
All three of them laugh as she turns and leaves the room. She makes her way into the living room. Her friends sit on the couch so she sits on the arm of the chair next to the person she'd consider her best friend. She leans back and sips from her cup.
People come in and out of the room constantly, but she loves being able to see everyone and socialize with whoever does come into the room. She talks to people she hasn't seen or spoken to in a little bit.
She's laughing at something her friend said when she watches the one person she didn't want to see walk into the room with Luca and Mark. They better not have snitched on her to him or she will make sure they hate the Monday Question next week.
Ethan's eyes land on her and she quickly averts her eyes. She looks at her friend and pretends to be invested in the conversation so maybe Ethan won't walk over and bother her.
Except, that plan fails. Before she knows it, Ethan is standing in front of her. He has the smuggest of smirks on his face when he approaches her.
“A little birdie told me that you were trying to avoid me, princess” he tells her. “Is that true?”
She could kill Luca, Mark, and TJ for snitching on her.
“So what if I was?” she questions as she crosses her arms over her chest. “And I’ve told you to stop calling me princess.”
“You’re in my house, princess,” Ethan retorts with a grin on his face and emphasizing the word ‘princess’ just to annoy her even more. “You don’t get to ignore me in my house, and I can do whatever I want because it is my house.”
“Says who?” she asks. “I can ignore whoever I want, their house or not. You're annoying and I like your roommates better anyway."
Ethan quiets down but he doesn't take his eyes off of her. She doesn't back down either. She holds her ground because she doesn't want him to think he's won. That's the last thing that she wants so she holds eye contact with him until he speaks again. Her heart pounds in her chest as she stands her ground.
A smile breaks out on his lips and she falters for a very quick second. "I knew you had a crush on one of my roommates," Ethan says. "Which one? Luca? Mark? I hate to break it to you, but Mark has a girlfriend. So does Hughesy. Oh my God. Do you have a thing for a guy who has a girlfriend? That's a little pathetic if you ask me."
She rolls her eyes, her blood beginning to boil after his comment. "You're such an asshole, Ethan," she tells him.
She then gets up out of her seat and walks upstairs to hide in one of the bathrooms for a few minutes while she cools down.
If someone were to ask her why she was so upset, she would say that she honestly has no idea. Something about Ethan Edwards just heats her blood. He riles her up, and it could be the smallest thing that does it too.
All he did was mess with her, and she's ready to punch him in the face. She's always ready to punch him in the face though, but it's often not because she's angry at him. Sometimes it's because he's genuinely one of the most attractive people she's ever seen. Just his face alone is enough to send her into a bad mood.
If Ethan wasn’t a massive pain in her ass, she probably would’ve hooked up with him by now. Maybe it’s what she’s wanted all along and the reason why she hates him so much. He’s infuriating, but he’s hot. It’s a dangerous combination, especially for her.
She splashes water on her face to cool down and does her best to fix up the makeup that came off with the water. It’s not a lot thanks to the inventor of waterproof makeup but it still runs just a little bit.
A knock rings through the bathroom and she calls, “One second!” There’s a second knock and she groans. “Do you not know what one second mea-” She freezes when she sees Ethan on the other side of the door as soon as she swings it open. “Oh, great. Just the person I want to see. Go away, Ethan.”
“I may have crossed a line,” he says as he rubs the back of his neck.
“You just keep adding on to the list of what you think I am, don’t you?” she retorts. “Annoying, nerdy, clingy, and now I’m pathetic despite not having a thing for a single one of your roommates, especially not the ones who are in relationships. Making that comment in front of everyone was embarrassing. Even for you.”
Ethan just nods and looks at her. “I know that,” he tells her. “It wasn’t until you walked away and Luca told me that what I said was wrong that I realized that I crossed the line.”
She runs her fingers through her wavy locks and lets out a soft sigh. “This wouldn’t be an issue if I just-” She cuts herself off from what she was about to say.
There’s tension. There’s been tension. She ignores it like it’s going to go away on it’s own but the innuendos and jokes have made it thicker than it’s ever been. It’s getting harder and harder to ignore it. Maybe if she just-
“Just what?” Ethan questions. She meets his eyes and finds confusion in them.
Do it. Get it over with.
Before she can talk herself out of it, she cups his jaw and pulls him down into a bruising kiss. Ethan has to take a little step toward her due to how hard she pulls him down to her.
He immediate pulls away in surprise. She stares up at him, but she doesn’t move her hands. Her eyes flicker between his like she’s searching for rejection, but that’s the one thing she doesn’t find. She finds deliberation and confusion.
Just in case he needs a little shove, she says, “We have been doing this whole back and forth thing for nearly four years, Ethan. You have to be as tired of it as I am. I feel the tension that’s grown so I’m sure you can to. This is the one and only time I’m offering this to you so we can just fuck it out and maybe end whatever feud thing that we’ve had going on. Worst comes to worst then we have a nice hookup and we can move on with our lives. Best case scenario, we get it out of our systems and we can actually be friends because-”
“Do you ever shut the fuck up, princess?” Ethan asks to cut her off.
She isn’t able to make a comeback because Ethan’s lips are back on hers before she can respond. He’s kissing her with the same intensity that she originally kissed him with.
His hands fall to her waist and he pulls her body flush against his chest. She feels every muscle flex underneath his thin shirt as he makes little movements to adjust to her height. She’s half a head shorter than he is so he has to make some adjustments to kiss her without breaking his neck. Eventually, he gives up and leans down to lift her up. She wraps her legs around his waist and slides her fingers into his hair.
Ethan turns and walks out of the bathroom. Luckily the hallway is dark so if anyone were to see them, they would think it’s just two people making out at a party. The door is kicked shut and her back is pinned to it. A soft thud is heard when her back makes contact with the wood. She hums when her skin hits the cool surface.
She kicks off her heels and they land on the carpeted floor with soft thuds. Ethan stands holding her back against the door for a second before he turns and walks toward his bed.
In the handful of times she’s had to come into this room, it’s been organized and in order. She gets a glance when the kiss breaks after he drops her on the mattress and finds it’s still very organized and in order. She would’ve never guessed that Ethan is one to keep things clean in his room.
Ethan kicks off his shoes before he climbs over her and hovers above her body. She immediately pulls him back into a hot kiss. He hums and a hand lands on her thigh. The already short black dress rides up her thigh until it rests right under her ass. His fingers follow the fabric up her leg. He grips her thigh and she gasps.
Her fingers slide down his back until they reach the hem of his Michigan hockey t-shirt. She tugs at it to hint that she wants him to take it off. Ethan listens to her signal and sits back on his knees, breaking the kiss. She watches as he pulls the fabric over his head.
Now, she’s seen him shirtless on numerous occasions. There have been times where she’s seen him in nothing but his boxers, but she’s always looked away. Right now, she gets to look. She takes full advantage of the moment and studies every part of his torso and chest. Ethan’s never been the biggest guy in the room, but his body is so toned. She could combust just from the view she has right now.
She gets her hands on him as fast as she can. Her hands start on his torso, tracing his abs before they trail up and over his chest. Ethan’s hands rest on hers when they reach his shoulders. He pulls her up so she’s sitting up with him between her knees. Their chests are flush against each other and she’s looking up at him.
Ethan hooks his fingers under the thin straps of the little black dress. He tugs them off her shoulders and she pulls her arms out of the straps. She keeps her eyes on Ethan as he pulls the top of her dress over her boobs. He gnaws on his bottom lips when he sees her tits.
“Fuck, princess,” he groans. “You hid these from me this entire time?”
“You never asked to see them,” she tells him. Ethan moves his hands to cup her bare tits. “Probably would’ve showed you if you asked, E.”
He grins and pushes her until she’s lying on her back. He leans down and wraps his lips around one of her nipples. She hums at the feeling. Ethan’s other hand gropes her other boob. He bites down on her bottom lip. She runs her fingers through his hair.
After what feels like seconds later, Ethan begins to kiss down her chest and stomach. He pulls the dress down as he lowers himself down her body. She lifts her butt up so he can get the dress off. It hits the floor and she presses her lips into a line as Ethan drinks her in.
Her hands slide between them and she works on getting Ethan’s pants off. She pushes his pants off his body and he kicks them to the floor. She gets a hand on the bulge in his boxers, palming him over the thin fabric. He snakes a hand into her lace panties. She hums at the feeling of his fingers cupping her sex.
She grinds her core against his fingers trying to get some pressure. She presses her lips into a line as she pleasures herself on his hand. Ethan slips a finger into her and she gasps at the new feeling. "Oh my God," she breathes out. "Warn a girl next time."
Ethan smiles and attaches his lips to her jaw. "We'll see," he mumbles against her skin.
Slowly, he works her toward an orgasm. A knot forms in the pit of her stomach like it always does when she's close to an orgasm. Soft groans pass her lips when Ethan adds a second finger. "I- fuck," she pants. "Ethan, Eddy. Please."
"Please what, princess?" Ethan asks.
"Fuck me like you hate me," she tells him. "Please. Please fuck me, E."
He pulls back and looks at her. His fingers stop moving in and out of her. A grin forms on his swollen lips. "Are you begging me to fuck you?" he questions. "I never thought I'd see the day when you would beg me for something."
"Ethan Edwards, I'm about to get up and go get Luca-"
"Oh I don't think so," Ethan interrupts as he goes into his bedside table to get something. He pulls out a little foil package and comes back over to hover over her. "You're going to take off the rest of your clothes and I will give you the best dick you've ever had in that pretty little pussy."
His words go straight to her core and she listens to him almost as soon as he's done talking. She slides off her ruined panties and Ethan takes off his boxers to slide on the condom that he pulled out of the drawer.
She lies down on her back and lets Ethan settle above her. He lines up at her entrance and she stares up at him. Ethan meets her eyes before he pushes into her. She gasps from the stretch and grabs his triceps. It's painful at first but quickly turns into pleasure the longer he's inside her. He slowly pushes into her until he's completely buried inside her.
Once the pain completely fades, she nods at him. "Go," she tells him.
As soon as he has her permission, Ethan rolls his hips. Her jaw drops as he slowly picks up speed. The pleasure is so much that she nearly blacks out. Her nails dig into his triceps so hard that she's pretty sure he's going to end up with marks on his arms.
This is the last thing that she ever expected to happen. She never thought she would be underneath Ethan and getting fucked by him. She doesn't know if she'll ever tell him this because his ego will grow bigger than it already is, but it might be the best sex she's ever had. It's a quick hookup but it's already better than the rest of the hookups she's ever had, not that there are that many to compare it to.
She wouldn't be against it if this were to ever happen again.
Ethan continues to move deeply into her, but his movements pick up speed. The bed creaks and the room his filled with the soft moans that pass her lips. Ethan pants as he continues to move.
She starts to move her hips to match his pace. "Holy shit," she cries out when the tip of his dick hits her favorite spot. "Ethan."
"Like that, baby?" Ethan pants. "Like feeling my dick inside you? Making you feel good?"
He slams into her once and she arches her back off the bed. "Yes!" she gasps. "Yes, Ethan. God. Fuck."
With her response, Ethan slows down but hits her spot over and over again. Her legs begin to shake as she reaches the edge. The knot in her stomach threatens to come undone.
Ethan leans down and crashes their lips together in a bruising kiss. She groans as she feels her entire body clench. She squeezes around his dick as she comes and cries out against his lips. Her hands find his hair and she grasps, needing something to hold onto.
She feels like she's on cloud nine as Ethan fucks her through both of their orgasms. Her body goes limp under his when he pulls out to dispose of the used orgasm.
He cleans both of them up with his shirt before he collapses on the bed next to her. Her breathing is labored but is slowly returning to normal.
When she finds the strength to move, she turns her head to look at him. Ethan's already looking at her when she looks at him.
"I never hated you," Ethan admits to her. She raises her eyebrows at him. "I mean it. I never hated you. I thought it was cute how flustered you got every time I messed with you so I kept doing it not knowing that it meant that you didn't like me. That was me trying to express my feelings but it was definitely the wrong way to do that."
She blinks at him. "You've said some hurtful thing to me, Ethan," she tells him. "I'm going to need some time to get over that but ... I think I'd be okay if we tried to be friends. I wouldn't be opposed to this either."
"I knew you always wanted me," he teases.
"Shut up," she replies as she leans in to kiss him.

In the cozy game room of the lake house, the clack of pool balls echoed against the wooden walls. The air had the scent of distinct masculinity from the four boys’ cologne mixed with sweat, mingling with the faint smoke tainted clothing from the fire that had been lit earlier in the evening. Luke leaned over the felt-covered table, eyeing the perfect shot, while Y/n sat on a barstool, sipping a lemonade and watching with a knowing smile. Jack urging his younger brother to hurry and get on with the game. Rutger, y/n’s twin brother, lounged on the plush couch, his gaze flicking between the game and his phone. Quinn accompanied him on the couch, but his attention was focused solely on his phone.
Y/n’s eyes remained glued to Luke as he took his shot, the muscles in his arms tensing and flexing. She felt the warmth of his presence and was lost in the familiar rhythm of their secret romance. The summer vacation had brought them closer than ever before, allowing them to cherish moments like these without the constant shadow of their college lives looming over them. As Luke sank the eight ball into the pocket with a triumphant grin, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride for the boy she had come to love.
Attempting to stifle a yawn, she suggested, "Why don’t we all watch a movie to wind down?" The room fell silent for a moment before Jack chipped in and nodded, "Sounds like a plan. What’s everyone’s pick?" Rutger and Quinn perked up, eager to participate in the selection process. Luke’s eyes met hers, a silent agreement passing between them. They had spent countless nights cuddled together, watching movies in the dorm, whispering sweet nothings and sharing secrets that only lovers knew. Now, with the comfort of his family's lake house surrounding them, the intimacy of their stolen moments seemed all the more precious.
Quickly scanning the DVD collection, Y/n selected a classic rom-com, one she knew would be a safe choice for the group. She popped it into the player then turning around to see the only places to sit were either sharing with Jack or between her brother and Luke. She settled onto the couch between her brother and Luke, her heart palpitating with anticipation. The opening credits rolled, and as the movie began, the room filled with laughter from jokes Rutger and Jack continued to make. Y/n felt the tension ease between her and Luke dissipate as they sank into the familiar rhythm of shared laughter and quiet glances. It was a simple pleasure, one they hadn’t had the luxury of in a while when not behind closed doors.
As the film progressed, the room grew quieter. The only sounds were the occasional giggles from Y/n and the distant croak of frogs from outside the window. Quinn’s head had lolled back onto the armrest, mouth slightly ajar, and his eyes closed in sleep. Rutger’s eyes remained glued to the screen, but his eyelids grew heavier with each passing second. Y/n felt her own eyelids drooping, the comfort of the couch and the warmth of Luke’s presence beside her lulling her into a gentle doze. She didn’t even notice when the last scene played out and the credits began to roll. The only indication she had of the passing time was the gentle weight of Rutger’s arm as they slid under her legs and around her shoulders lifting her off the couch.
“Off to bed sis.” Rutger mumbled in his own tired state.
Over his shoulder, Luke and the other two sluggishly followed behind. Y/n’s sleep ridden and glossed over eyes met Luke’s and for a moment they were the only two in the house for the night.
Rutger kicked open the door to the guest room and gently placed her on the bed. The room was bathed in the soft moonlight that filtered through the blinds, casting a serene glow over the room. The bed sheets smelled faintly of fresh fabric softener and the faint scent of Luke’s cologne lingered in the air from when he had brought her suitcase up earlier. She felt safe, nestled between the comfort of her twin’s arms and the thought of Luke just outside her door.
As Rutger tucked her in, she mumbled a sleepy goodnight, her eyelids fluttering shut. He brushed her hair back before he kissed the top of her head, whispering, "Night, sis. Love you." His footsteps grew distant as he left the room, and she could hear the other boys bid their farewells and stumble to their own rooms. The house grew still, the only sounds the occasional creaks of the old floorboards settling and the rhythmic chirp of crickets outside.
Luke waited, anxiously and as if the word patient didn’t exist, until the darkness was absolute. He tiptoed across the hall, each step feeling like a mile. His hand hovered over the doorknob, and he took a deep breath, willing himself to be silent. He turned it gently, the door opening without a sound. He stepped into the room, his eyes falling right over to the bed where Y/n lay, her chest rising and falling with deep, even breaths. Each time he looked at her he couldn’t believe she was his. He wanted to yell it from the roof of Yost. No from the top of the Empire State Building, but she was terrified of ruining relationships with her brother between Luke and him and herself and him.
He stepped closer, his bare feet making no sound on the cool wooden floor. The moon cast a silver path to her bed, and he followed it like a moth to a flame. He sat on the edge, his hand reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair from her cheek. His finger traced the curve of her jaw and the line of her neck, feeling the warmth of her skin. Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked at him with a sleepy smile. She didn’t even question his presence, she just reached out making grabby hands for him. Luke took his place next to her and she immediately pulled him closer, her hand resting on his chest. He felt her breathing change, her heart rate slowed, as she snuggled into him, her head finding the crook of his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around her, his hand resting on her hip, and held her tightly.
“Hi, baby.” Luke placed a kiss to her forehead. “I couldn’t sleep knowing you were right across the hall. I had to be able to hold you, kiss you, wake up next to you.” Luke pressed multiple kisses around her face before ending with a soft kiss to her lips.
“You’re going to get us caught, Luke.” She whispered but her words lacked any real warning. Her arms wrapped around his neck and she pulled him closer for a deeper kiss. They both knew the risks but the thrill of the secret just added to the allure.
He chuckled, the sound vibrating through her. “We’re adults, Y/n. It’s just a kiss. Besides, I don’t think anyone’s up to hear us. Now, let’s get some sleep before we have to pretend to barely know each other tomorrow morning.”
With a sigh, she nodded and they lay there, the quiet of the night wrapping around them like a cozy blanket. The only sounds were their soft breaths mingling together, the chirping crickets, and the occasional hoot of an owl in the distance. The comfort of their shared silence grew deeper, the weight of their secret pressing down like a gentle lullaby.
As the night progressed, the moon climbed higher in the sky, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow across their entwined forms. Luke’s thumb stroked gentle circles on Y/n’s back, her breathing evened out as she relaxed into his embrace. The warmth of their bodies seemed to push the coolness of the room away, creating a pocket of serenity that neither wanted to disturb.
But the peace was shattered when Y/n’s eyes snapped open, her body jolting with a scream that pierced the quiet of the night. Her heart hammered in her chest, and she thrashed about in the bed, lost in a nightmare she couldn’t escape. Luke’s arms tightened around her, trying to soothe her, but she pushed him away, her eyes wild with fear.
"No, no, no," she murmured, her voice frantic and trembling. Luke sat up, his own heart racing, and gently touched her shoulder. "Y/n, babygirl, it’s okay. It’s just a bad dream, you’re safe. You’re safe with me always."
Her eyes snapped open, and she took in the sight of him, the fear in her gaze slowly morphing into relief. The moon had traveled further across the sky, casting new patterns of light and shadow over their tangled forms. She took a deep, shuddering breath and reached out to him, her nails digging into his skin as she held onto him tightly. He held her trembling body against his firm strong body, her body heat drastically increased from fear against the coolness of the room.
“It’s okay, it’s just me. You’re safe here.” He whispered against her ear, his breath warm and soothing. He felt her body begin to relax as his words sank in, the tension slowly seeping out of her like water from a squeezed sponge.
But just as Luke’s heartbeat returned to a steady rhythm, the door to the room flew open with a bang, making them both jump. Rutger stood in the doorway, his eyes wide with concern, the light from the hallway spilling into the room and highlighting his features. He had clearly heard his sister’s distress and come to her aid. However, the scene that greeted him was not what he expected.
Y/n sat up in bed, her eyes red and puffy from the tears she hadn’t even realized she’d shed. Rutger’s gaze flitted from her to Luke and back again, his expression unreadable. The silence stretched out like a tightrope, each second feeling like an eternity as they waited for him to speak.
"You okay, sis?" Rutger’s voice was gentle, belying the storm of emotions that had to be raging within him. He stepped into the room, his eyes searching hers for any signs of distress beyond the nightmare. - Silently communicating with her about the boy next to her. His close friend, his teammate, but at the moment his enemy.
Y/n nodded, her voice shaky. "It was just a bad dream." She didn’t dare look at Luke, the secret they’d been keeping from Rutger suddenly feeling like it was written across the room in flashing neon lights. Rutger’s eyes narrowed at her as he nodded.
“And you? Why are you in here?” Rutger asked dropping emphasis on the second you.
Luke swallowed hard. Unwrapping his arms from y/n, he sat up straight, the cold air of the room hitting him like a slap. “I heard her scream and I came to check on her.” He tried to keep his voice calm and even, but the lie tasted bitter on his tongue.
Rutger's eyebrows shot up, the tension in the room thickening. “Really?” He stepped closer to the bed, his gaze unwavering. “It’s just a little odd, don’t you think?”
Luke’s eyes darted to Y/n’s, the weight of their shared secret palpable between them. He knew he couldn’t lie to Rutger, not anymore. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Okay, I can’t lie to you, man. Y/n and I are together. We’ve been seeing each other since November.”
Rutger’s expression froze, his eyes widening in shock. For a moment, no one said a word. Then, a chuckle escaped his lips, turning into a full-blown laugh. “You’re kidding, right? This is some kind of sick joke?” But the seriousness in Luke’s eyes told him it was no joke. The laughter died away, and the room grew tense again.
Y/n looked up at her brother, her eyes brimming with tears. She knew this moment had been inevitable, but she had hoped it would come under better circumstances. With a trembling voice, she said, “Rutger, it’s true. I’m sorry we didn’t tell you sooner. We didn’t know how you’d react, and we didn’t want to ruin your all’s friendship or how close we are..”
Rutger’s laughter had turned into a scoff. He sat on the edge of the bed, his expression a mix of confusion and frustration. He looked at his teammate, then back at his sister, his jaw clenched. “You two are together?”
“Yes, Rutger.” Y/n’s voice was firm, her eyes never leaving brother’s .
Rutger’s gaze bore into Luke, his voice tight. “You better not be playing games with my sister, Luke. You know she’s had enough of that already.”
Luke’s face grew serious, his eyes searching Rutger’s for any hint of understanding. He took a deep breath, his heart racing as he gathered his thoughts. “I can’t believe you would even think that of me. I’m not playing games, Rutger. I love your sister. More than I’ve ever loved anyone. She’s my everything, and I’d do anything to make her happy. Before you even ask me, yes that includes keeping our relationship a secret from everyone for months on months. Even though I’d love to go out somewhere with hundreds of people and just scream that she’s mine. Not in a territorial way but an I love her way.”
Rutger only saw pure sincerity and a fierce protectiveness that matched his own feelings for his sister when he searched over Luke’s features.
Rutger looked at the two of them, his twin, so vulnerable and Luke, so earnest. He took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the world. "If it has to be any of my friends, I’d rather it be you than any of the others." He paused, looking at them both, "But you guys have to promise me, you won’t let it affect our friendship, the group, or the team."
Y/n felt a weight lift off her chest, she had been holding her breath without realizing it. "We promise," she whispered, her voice barely audible. Luke nodded in agreement, his eyes never leaving Rutger’s. "We'll do everything we can to keep things normal. Now leave so I can celebratory kiss my boyfriend and go back to sleep." Y/n shoved at her brother.
Rutger rolled his eyes, but ultimately listened to her. “Just don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
