'Polka Dot Moments' Created Memorable Connections!
The invitation to Umind?!'s live DVD recording of Polka Dot Moments was both exciting and nerve wrecking as we did not know what to expect. Running a little bit late, we managed to find some seats in the intimately and well decorated Indaba conference room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Harare.
The event was hosted by ZiFM Stereo's Lady K, who wore a beautiful glittery pink dress as well as having her make-up done by Mac Cosmetics and Massy dressed in black and a hound tooth blazer, both who made a good combination as they managed to engage the audience throughout the event. The hostess herself, Umind?! was dressed in a lovely black dress, keeping things simple.Though there was a sizeable number of people attending the event, the ambience around the event was satisfactory as it gave a homely feeling with friends, family and spoken word lovers. Amongst the guests was Afro jazz singer, Dudu Manhenga, who was the guest of honour, fellow spoken word artist and radio personality, SoProfound, and Madzitatiguru who took over the proceedings of being Master of Ceremony in the last half of the event.
Umind?! is well known for not only incorporating her Christian faith in her works but as well as standing by it and she invited features of individuals who share her beliefs. The features included TK Churchboi, Sharon and Ethnic Worship. The delightful Vera collaborated with Umind?! during her performances as the songstress sang whilst Umind?! share pieces of her heart, mind and soul in a number of deep, thought provoking spoken word pieces. The two performed a rendition of Jamaican based T.O.K's footprints as Umind?! spoke and created conversation through her piece.
In between the segments of the event, performances by Sharon whose choreography was enjoyable and mesmerising, while Etnic Worship gave some oxygen to the crowd as they sang their catchy song "Air" which had everybody flapping their hands as they sang along. In the second part of the recording, Umind?! was joined by fellow poets Tamara and Nissi who performed the nostalgic rendition of "Samatenga" by the late Simon Chimbetu, during the piece "Polka Dot Moments". That was a 'polka dot moment'.
Amongst the pieces performed during the night were ‘It Is Not For Kings’, ‘Leave, Cleave and Weave’, ‘Kingdom Bank’ and ‘Gethsemane, Hell & the Grave', which had the continuous connection of the poet to her Creator. The big surprise came when Umind?! launched her clothing label 'Umind' which was showcased by models who wore blazers, dresses, skirts and blouses bearing the 'Umind?!' logo. By then spoken word artist Madzitatiguru had taken over the mic and he joked about how he had to be formal for the occasion, something that is not a norm for him wearing a suit. He called on Dudu Manhenga to make her speech but before that she called on the youngest guest in the audience, a little girl who created yet another 'polka dot moment' as the crowd went "Aah!" in awe to the innocence.
Dudu shared a very profound speech about individuality, staying in one's lane and creating the best brand that one can be and have. After the speech Umind?! closed off with her appreciation to God for the strength and ability to host such an event as well as giving thanks for that she has. Vera gave a closing performance as she serenaded the crowd. To capture the moments a photo booth was set up for all to share that 'polka dot moment' with Umind?! as well as loved ones.
"A polka dot moment is a moment you remember from your past. That moment when you look back and you see the big picture, or you remember making someone smile, tears you shed with loved ones, that time you fell and your mum helped you up. It's any moment you remember and it helps you appreciate the good and the bad you have been through", Umind?! said whilst preparing for the 'Polka Dot Moments' live DVD recording. We applaud her and the team behind the scenes for a job well done in creating a memorable event from the look of the venue to the performances and those unforgettable memories created through words and vision. Polka Dot Moments lived up to its name and the DVD will be available in time for the Christmas holiday.
