Some words/ names in Stargate and where I think the writers got them from
Jaffa: an ancient Levantine port city on the Mediterranean coastline, mentioned in many Egyptian and Mesopotamian writings; mentioned a lot in history bc of its associations w battle stories and strategic things
Naquadah: likely named after the town of Naqada, now an archaeological site positioned on the Nile and meaning "City of Gold" (precious metal connection between the real place and the role of naquadah in the show); also refers to a predynastic Egyptian material culture
Abydos: one of the oldest ancient Egyptian cities (abedju in ancient egypt; abydos is the greek name). its one of the most important ancient Egyptian archaeological sights that has a bunch of temple/ burial remains, having been at one point the royal burial grounds
Unas: the last king of the Fifth dynasty during the Old Kingdom of Egypt; likely the first pharaoh to have the Pyramid texts on the chamber walls of their pyramid; built pyramid in Saqqara. Speaking of Saqqara...
Skaara: ok this might just be a name they picked from some source on names they found, but given the past location-based trends, Im fairly sure the writers derived it the name Sakkara/ Saqqara. This is an egyptian village that was an ancient burial ground and holds the very old Pyramid of Djoser (among other things)
Sha'uri/ Sha're: like w Skaara this might just be a name they found and used and then changed for Shanks and co to more easily pronounce. Two theories on her original movie name:
1) derived from the pharaoh Sahure (name means "he who is close to Ra") who was fairly known for his international relations (which could be connected to the establishment of interplanetary relations the character is associated with)
2) its from the Swahili word shauri. Im not very familiar w the language/ culture surrounding this word so I may be mistranslating it, but from what I could find online, a shauri in more contemporary uses is a plan, advice, consultation, or matter of conversation, which I think really fits the role she played in the movie as a conversational partner and consultant to Daniel Jackson when he's learning the Abydonian dialect
Thats all ive got for now!
