One thing I really love about Stargate is that there isn't this idea of a one-step redemption for anyone. You can see that the best with Teal'c, who may have switched sides, risked his family, and threw everything in his life away in the name of fighting the Goa'uld. But he still faces the ongoing consequences for his actions while serving under Apophis.

In Cor-Ai (s1, ep 16), he was fully prepared to die as a legal consequence for not only killing the one man he was on trial for, but for everyone else that he harmed while (reluctantly) following Apophis's orders. In the end, he proves himself to the one person making that decision about his guilt, but it's obvious that he is yet to prove his own innocence to himself. Because redemption isn't a once off decision. It isn't a few attempts to do better. It's a lifetime of undoing the harm, proving yourself to be a different person, and still acknowledging that people have a right to be upset about the things you did before that change.

And Teal'c gets that. Stargate gets that. If only the more modern stories about redeeming once villains would understand that too.

Stargate rewatch - Fair Game

Yay Major Carter! ❤️❤️ I’m sooo glad she was promoted, she so deserved it! ❤️❤️  This episode gives me one of my favorite images of Daniel.

I love Jack getting abducted by Thor at the beginning of his speech.

It’s sweet that Jack thinks Daniel should be the one to negotiate the treaty.  The Yu jokes begin lol.  Poor Teal’c, this is really hard for him with his connection to Cronus.

First reference to the Replicators.  Poor Jack trying to make the tough decision and figure out what Thor isn’t saying.  And we have a demonstration of the healing device and Sam using it successfully. I like how they prove that Nirrti hurt Cronus and they secure the treaty without surrendering the Stargate.

Synopsis: In modern-day Egypt, Professor Daniel Jackson teams up with retired Army Col. Jack O'Neil to unlock the code of an interstellar gateway to an ancient Egypt-like world. They arrive on a planet ruled by the despotic Ra, who holds the key to the Earth travelers' safe return. Now, in order to escape from their intergalactic purgatory, Jackson and O'Neil must convince the planet's people that Ra must be overthrown.

Characters:

Catherine Langford: a mysterious and wealthy heiress. Her father discovered the Stargate in 1928 on a dig in Giza.

Dr Daniel Jackson: an intelligent but over eager archeologist. Considered to have outlandish ideas in his field.

Colonel Jack O'Neil: a highly depressed Air Force Colonel, chosen to serve and die.

Ra: a parasitic alien living in the body of an Egyptian boy. Rules over the planet of a people as their God. Evil snake.

Sha're: a beautiful and courageous Abydonian woman who rebels against all she knows to help free her people. Falls in love with the only nerd of the group.

Stand Out Moments:

Seeing the Coverstones: the first time we see the coverstones in the air force base. The size and scope of them, the prop is massive and looks amazing. It really helps sell the mystery that Jackson has to crack.

Weird Camel/Cow: such a great practical puppet. Its also the first moment of real comedy in the movie that reminds me of the goofiness of the tv show.

Alien Abilities: overall, the aura and power of the aliens. At this point, we know nothing about this species or what they can do, and the movie treats them very seriously. They are powerful and a little scary, which is very fun.

Shippy Moments:

There is only one ship in the movie, which is Daniel/Sha're. The actors do a good job of it, considering that she barely speaks throughout the movie. Enough chemistry to get me invested in them being together.

Overall Comments:

I am watching the movie as a base for a re-watch of the SG-1 series, and I am glad I did. The movie certainly influences the early seasons of the show, especially the crossover characters of Daniel Jackson and Colonel O'Neill. I was pleasantly surprised with the scale of the movie, from sets to props to special effects. I think the show is much more fun, with a more diverse cast, more loveable characters, and a giant dash of whimsy. However, I do think the movie is more interesting, especially with the looks we get into Ra's world. Shout out to Skaara's slutty little crop top.

Stargate SG-1 Rewatch: Ways Jack Addresses Sam Season 1 Recap

Today @ten-cent-sleuth and I finished season 1 in our Stargate rewatch! For funsies I've decided to keep track of what Jack calls Sam and how often (and also bc I've gotten the impression that he most often calls her by rank in the early seasons before switching almost entirely to "Carter" after realizing he's caught feelings and I wanted to see if I was right lol).

For this I won't be counting alternate universe versions of either of them, and for the android duplicates I've decided to count them until they (and the audience) realize that they are in fact duplicates and not the originals in android bodies.

Total counts for season 1: Sam: 5 Carter: 16 Rank*: 34 Doctor: 3 Samantha: 1

*I'm including instances where he called her "Captain Carter" and not just simply "Captain" bc I feel like the emphasis is more on her rank in those cases.

Elaboration on the "Sam"'s, "Doctor"'s, and "Samantha" below the cut (I'll do one of these recaps after every season, but IIRC there are very few instances after this point where he calls her anything other than Carter or her rank):

The lone instance of "Samantha" comes from Emancipation, during the infamous blue dress scene:

The first time he calls her "Doctor" is during their first meeting in Children of the Gods:

After she tells him off, he reverts mostly to "Captain" and he only calls her "Doctor" twice more, once in The Broca Divide and once in Solitudes, both times in jest and when one of them is not fully lucid:

Currently rewatching Stargate SG-1 because it is probably my favorite show and I haven’t watched in forever. I am DEEP in my Sam/Jack feels lol. But I am now in S4 E17 Absolute Power. There is a big tornado calling out to Daniel and a child emerges. And it’s basically the fucking Avatar lmao. Look at him! He looks like an airbender!
