Man, Rogue’s brain is such a fantastically fucked work of art. Here’s she’s been drained of her mutant power and she retreats into her mind where every personality she’s ever absorbed is waiting to hang out with her. And even though she’s sitting broken in a Genosha prison cell, she can just let the psyche of Ms. Marvel take over  with all her James Bond super spy skills and bust herself out. Pretty bad ass. I’ve never read this comic, but I’ve always loved this cover, if only because of the accurate representation of the proportional difference between Rogue and Wolverine. He really looks like the runt he’s supposed to be here, a characteristic that’s been lost in Hugh Jackman’s film portrayal. (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)

I have always thought, due to my exposure to the later Genosha stories that happen at the end of Claremont’s run, that the prison body suits the Genoshan government slaps on its mutant prisoners are just fabulous. Look at that getup!! She’s not going to rot in some in a maximum security prison. She’s going to a taping of the 1960s sketch comedy show Laugh-In where she’s going get high as fuck and make out with Goldie Hawn. And have you ever noticed that none of those suits ever look the same?? They aren’t mass produced. Each one is unique!! Somewhere, some mild mannered government contractor is following her fabulous dreams as a far out fashion designer. (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)

Alright this was terrifying for about 10 god damn minutes, because it’s not crazy to consider “taking a few liberties with” as a euphemism for rape when a bunch of authoritative male figures are manhandling a helpless woman. But fortunately, later in this comic it is revealed that the guards were only being rough with her, but the brief physical contact from the encounter was enough to give poor, touch deprived Rogue an emotional breakdown. It’s sad that we live in such a rape infested society that it’s not so crazy to just assume that the worst possible thing happens to people. I’m glad Rogue didn’t get gang raped by a bunch of racist, jackbooted soldiers though. (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)

Later?? What do you mean later??? You’re about to have genetic experiments performed on you by a diabolical fascist government, and an insidious hell demon with whom you have a blood pact offers to help you out. Why did you bother making a blood pact with a bunch of demons if you don’t want their help in situations like this?? (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)

I don’t believe this is the first time we’ve seen Wolverine deprived of his powers, although I can’t for the life of me remember when this has happened before. However, it is the first time we see how sick and incapacitated Wolverine becomes when he doesn’t have his healing factor to counter the blood poisoning he suffers from due to his adamantium laced bones. Which is sort of bullshit!! I watched Lady Deathstrike rip out Wolverine’s intestines and use them to make balloon animals, and he was still able to move around and fight back! This guy’s tolerance for pain is off the charts so it doesn’t make sense that a little sepsis would knock him on his ass like this. (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)

Oh my god N’astirh isn’t some fucked up scary Exorcist hell demon. He’s like the obnoxious guy at work who keeps calling you after you’ve told him about a hundred times that you don’t want to hang out. “Hi Madelyne! It’s N’astirh. I was just sitting in the demon maw blow drying my hair and I thought I heard the phone ring. That ever happen to you?? Call me! We’ll talk about it!” (Uncanny X-Men #236 – Oct 1988)
