AVL DBS WEEK 2
This week we started off at the AB-Tech wood shop to bring our nesting box designs to fruition. This was my first time utilizing the wood shop. A few things I learned: tolerance, tolerance, tolerance. Plywood is not precise. I learned to use the chop saw, band saw, table saw, a framing square, and sander.
On Tuesday our projects were reviewed by Heath Moody (Ab-Tech Instructor) Darren from Old Wood and Michael Sorin of Legerton Architecture. Many questions resulted out of the initial mock-ups: strength of the boxes, sizes, and the ability to connect the boxes became a priority.
The week escalated quickly as myself and 4 team members hosted a one-day design charette for the CCCD. The purpose of the charette was to create a discussion regarding the use of the CCCD basement as a maker space. To conclude the charette four students met with Brandon Pass the CCCD architect, and Doug Hecker of Clemson’s own maker space to flesh out preliminary design ideas for the space. The result was a linear layering of spaces, with the entrance at Carolina Lane. This was an awesome opportunity to practice leadership skills, communication, and working as a team. I felt that the final result was lacking in a consensus of the ideas developed during this charette. However, Mike at CCCD was persistent about revisiting the results of the charette and pulling out the essential information. It was definitely a first for me and having the opportunity to involve influential members of an architectural design from users to employees and/or owners is beneficial for all parties who will be affected.
The rest of the week consisted of preliminary design for the U-LEAF. An initial design was solidified on Saturday consisting of a cantilevered canopy over the stage with a trailer as the ideal base.
