Last week I finished my first pair of socks! Top down, vanilla, colour change (100% wool + nylon blend for heel and toe), ssk heel flap. I followed orangeknits’ how I roll pattern (a treasury of techniques!)

They're a bit wonky but I love them nonetheless. I feel like I have achieved a big step (pun intended) in knitting! Lots of love to my bestie who helped me through the process, but also gifted me the yarn and needles last Christmas. I was very intimidated when she told me I would learn to knit socks in 2025, and yet here we are!

Sockmaking will quickly become an addiction I think. I'm already working on a new pair lol

mending and skill trades

Visited my friend Sophie today, as she needed tailoring on her clothes. Life hasn't been kind to her lately, and she lost a lot of weight, so some of her clothes didn't fit anymore. I offered to tailor them, and I feel like we both win: she'll get to wear her favourite clothes again, and I have a fun little project to help her out :) So we went through her clothes, I pinned them (inside out) to her liking, and brought them home. It'll be a mix of hand sewing (for the thicker materials), and machine sewing (for the more straightforward pieces). My goal is to keep everything reversible, so if she chooses to change them in the future again, she can just seam rip it and she won't be short on material.

As a thanks, she gave me a loaf of homemade bread. Her bread is always amazing and I don't know how to bake bread at all, so I was super happy. In the bus on the way home, I thought about how great it was to trade our skills that way (and how to eat the bread). Instead of both spending money on necessities, we just traded our "silly little hobbies", which in fact are not silly at all, but real skills that can help ourselves and others. It kind of felt like a communal moment, detached from capitalism and consumerism. Am I reaching?

Late for WIP Wednesday but...

I've been working on this lovely hap (a Shetland cousin of the shawl) for a week. The accent yarn is everything to me. Speckled yarn my beloved.

WIP Wednesday!

Finished my Theme and Variation hap yesterday, in the middle of a heatwave yes but this is the life I chose.

I'm spending my afternoons at the library AC room nowadays. I'm working on Suraya Hossain’s Falasteen long cowl, a gorgeous piece of craftivism. It'll be perfect to wear in the winter, a bit more subtle than my full on keffiyeh which I can't wear to work.

3rd knitting project, first "real" garment!

This is Maker Maker’s See My Vest pattern in Gepard’s upcycling Puno yarn. This pattern is easy enough to follow, and it taught me basics about garment construction.

The weather here in Paris is a wee bit warm for a knitted vest now lol, but I'm still excited to wear it!

First visible mending project!

Although it's far from good, I like the colours I chose to repair the hole in one of my favourite sweaters! The placement is fortunate too, it kind of looks like an embroidered logo or something.

Fun fact, I got the sweater from a friend’s closet, when she cleared out her grandma's things (don't worry she didn't pass away).

The repair is uneven and irregular (still fumbling with tension on a spherical surface), but you can't really tell from afar, and it’s ready to be worn next season!
