Memo 496: Regarding human mating rituals

For reasons I refuse to consider many of you have been asking for information regarding human courtship rituals particularly how to tell if the parties involved are interested in pursuing a relationship of some sort. Such data has never been recorded and I was forced to consult with cosmic defender 349728. The simple answer regarding human mating rituals is no one knows.

The male cannot accurately predict when the female is interested and vice versa. Their garments colors are meaningless to their own species, worn more for there own enjoyment rather then the enticement of suitable mates. Furthermore, they will change their garments for a variety of reasons, one of which is the attraction of potential mates but it could just as easily be the individual likes this coverings fit better. The humans may or may not have pheromonal capabilities, if they do they are completely unaware of this facet of their biology. Humans will put effort into looking appealing for no reason other than it is expected of them.

Humans will engage in playful verbal bantering and compliments, which may be a sign of interest or it may be a sign that they absolutely do not see you as a potential life partner. Furthermore, humans have been known to invite each other for potentially romantic outings as friends with no romantic interests. And this does not even touch on the tribal differences between mating rituals in the different tribes of mankind. As always this memo is not to be referenced with the subject of the memo

a story of an unwanted conversation

I have a story, one that takes place during one of my classes today, and it’s about a classmate making me feel uncomfortable with his words and his words only. The comments he made and the questions he asked made me want to cover my torso and hide under my bed until the feeling of uncomfortableness passed. And he did this only with his words.

Some backstory: On Instagram the other day, I posted a photo with the caption “Naked or not naked? It seems that’s the question Instagram cropping poses” because Instagram had cut off the bit of my dress you could see, making it look like I was wearing nothing. 

Now, one would chalk this up as a joke, right? It’s obviously the cropping that makes it look that way, and then leave it alone. However, and I’m assuming he meant this jokingly, he commented on this picture “The question is were you lol” but it immediately made me feel weird about posting the photo on my own social media profile. Whatever, I ignored it, he was just trying to be dorky. 

When class rolled around a few days later, we both had gotten there early and were sitting in the classroom waiting for the professor. I was snapchatting @megan-hufflepuff about how I wanted to die because finals were up. When he sat down next to me he - without hesitation - started asking me what I was talking to her about. I was a bit annoyed and told him I was talking about finals with a friend. Whatever.

Thirty seconds go by and he pulls up my Instagram page on his phone and goes, “I saw your post the other day, the one where you were naked” and proceeded to talk about the post to me. Not wanting to talk about it, I blew off his comments, answering with one-word answers and shit. He continued to talk about the photos. Finally, I said, “Look, I wasn’t naked in it, it was how Insta cropped it” and he dropped it. 

However, a few seconds go by and he starts talking about all of my Instagram pictures and how I never look at the camera in them (I’m always looking off to the side). I turned to him and responded, “Thanks?” because I had no idea what else I was supposed to say. He continued talking about my Instagram. 

He then proceeded to ask me where the photos are taken. I said my room. He asked me if I lived in a dorm. I said yes. He asked me what dorm. I said the name. He asked me what type of room I lived in. I said apartment style. He nodded. 

Then, another classmate came in and sat down next to me who’s never made me feel uncomfortable before and I subconsciously scooted closer to him. For the rest of the class, I leaned closer to the other classmate and kept my arms up around and over my torso because I’m wearing an off the shoulder dress and I felt exposed in something that isn’t exposing. 

What I absolutely hate about this is the fact that I tried to shut the conversation down and he didn’t listen; he asked intrusive questions and felt like those were okay things to ask me. I felt like I was sitting next to him naked while wearing appropriate attire. It’s not fun to feel like this. 

Don’t fucking ask people creepy questions.

Also! For those who are getting harassed by someone verbally and feel like they can’t talk to anyone because it’s only verbal harassment: sexual harassment isn’t limited to physical interactions (as discussed in my Women’s and Gender Studies class).

I feel really bad right now, I just had an uncomfortable conversation with a friend about how we kind of flirted but now are totally platonic and we are both on the same page and it’s so platonic and fine but it was uncomfortable for me because I felt it was not a conversation we needed to have. He left and I started having a panic attack and I already purged today but I threw up again because I just felt literally physically ill with anxiety. I called a few of my friends but no one answered and I know they’ll feel guilty in the morning when they see my missed calls but I needed someone but instead i am alone and crying and so so anxious, I hate that this is how my brain works.

Ways to get out of uncomfortable conversations

"Is it okay if we stop talking about this?"

"I'd rather not pursue this conversation."

"Please excuse me."

Change the subject.

Ask someone else to interrupt.

Find a natural transition (ex: a distraction in the room.)

Bring the covversation full circle (ex. thanks for giving me advice on x!)

Do something weird. That's always a different conversation starter.

Suggest future plans.

Say you need to do something, then do it.

Run away, 99% of the time they won't pursue you.

Gosh, kinda embarrassed

Just had the “you don’t seem interested in boys, are you gay?” talk. Followed with the “if you ever have confusing thoughts in your head you can talk to me, I won’t shun you” talk. My mom thought me and my best friend were gay for each other. After I told her we weren't she asked if my friend was trying to make me a lesbian. She doesn't understand that I'm just not interested in a relationship with anyone. Girl or boy
