i am usually a simple folk, i like canon pairings because ... well, there it is! but surprisingly (to me at least) it's been a lot of fun considering smushing characters from gg together just to see what i think might happen. anyway, in a shocker to literally no one especially i am sure you: beth x phoebe! that is some true enemies-to-lovers please-please-please-please-let-me-get-what-i-want-this-time junk. please ladies go to cabo just once and see what happens!!!! stay locked in the hotel room naked together ordering room service and eating (*nudge nudge*) in bed the whole weekend. they would be really, really gross together and i love that.

mary pat! i really loved how she was in a lot of ways a foil to beth, and i remember being fucking flabbergasted at the flip on her storyline with jeff. it's dark and heartbreaking and really fucking sad and in the end i still wound up rooting for her. i hope her kids get therapy dsgdfhjklg

👻 Dropped plotline / foreshadowing

I did a fave foreshadowing here, so I'll do a fave dropped plotline now! Mmm, I'm going to say the camera in 2.13. I think it was a bit of a silly narrative device to build tension generally, and I think a beleaguered season with Rio using a video of the shooting as leverage against Beth would've been really draining and actually hindered narrative tension not amplified it. I'm glad they ditched it.

i honestly really love how so many of the side characters are fleshed out on the show. i think jt, diane, and the newer ones like vance are really well-developed and truly alive with personality. so my answer for this is 100% RHEA!!! it does make sense why she never came back/kept her distance after she learned who beth was/what she did, but her stint on the show felt short and rushed and that made me sad. the girl whipped out a checkbook to pay for the mortgage of a person she'd befriended in the last what? month? maybe two? however time works. she's either really naively trusting (which like okay, maybe, but eh), boundlessly generous (which i could get), or she really felt like she and beth were forging some DEEP friendship-- which means!!! they must've shared deep talks!!! not just vague-ing around "marcus's daddy" and sports ball. right? right!?!? in a way i do see it working fine narratively -- that the relationship was always about beth and her guilt anyway, so any conversations that may have seemed "heartfelt" to rhea were tainted from the start and thus not necessary to be seen on screen but idk i would just eat up any and all further backstory where rhea's involved!

👀 Inexplicable / unnecessary scene

tyler's workout montage at the start of 4x06. i just. why. cut it back to him putting his uniform on, peering at and then picking up the gun (the only part of the scene i found interesting-- that he clearly got a better job including a promotion to a position that includes higher risk/responsibility that he did not earn from taking credit for the second grocery store robbery in whatever-that-episode-was). but i can admit that i'm biased and would have much preferred that minute of airtime to go to oh i don't know other important *cough* family cookout *cough* moments in the ep. AND ALSO the zit popping scene in 4x14. WHY. IT GOES ON FOR SO LONG. WHYYY.

edit to add: oh i just remembered that tyler had a gun during the second robbery too. SO IDK!!!!

i'm no good at remembering what things were dropped or not. so i guess i will go with the loft video tape from 2x13. i've sort of explained it away personally that rio's plan clearly didn't go the way he wanted it to, so the tape was worthless anyway. idk!

Oooo, for Good Girls, this might be surprising, but I actually think some of my favourite foreshadowing on the show is when Rhea stopped answering Beth's calls in 3.02. I think the whole episode balanced the tension really well and played into the fact that we didn't know Rhea well enough to predict how she was going to react or what Rio was going to tell her. The way it sort of bounced off the released tension from the Judith and Beth conflict being relatively resolved, only to put Beth on a collision course with Rio again was really fun and well earned, I thought.

🍓  Friendship / family dynamic

i'm going to answer this for family dynamic! annie + ben all the way. i was sold from moment 1 when annie peeled around that corner to drop ben off at school. they've always nailed the dynamic of a young mom growing up along side her child while at the same time learning how to properly parent (or learning what kind of parent she wants to be). ben's taken care of his mom and has often played the role of parent in their relationship -- he's responsible and thoughtful in ways annie is not and i it's because he's had to be when his mom has always sort of been a mess. they feel like friends who fight and bicker, who are in some ways too similar and vastly different. ben tears into his mom in a way that none of the other kids on the show do with their parents (sara and ruby being close, but that feels different, too) and annie clings to ben because she's been his mom for almost more than half her life, and how do you learn to let your baby go? their growth over the seasons has felt authentic and overall moves in a positive direction, even when there are set-backs. and it's always just felt really, really real to me. plus, mae and isaiah are just! so! good! together!

answered here. but i'll name another one: my main man MICK! i don't actually think he's underdeveloped at all, but he's another character i would thoroughly enjoy watching an entire episode solely dedicated to learning more about him in canon. or just like, a youtube vlog of him reviewing various menu items at ihop. i just love him <3

🍓  Friendship / family dynamic

Oooo, I like a lot of the friendships and family dynamics on the show, but I have a particular soft spot for Jack and Andie. I really love storylines that explore the people who are left behind after tragedy, and Jack and Andie grappling with their brother's death and it alternately making them closer and tearing them apart was something I really enjoyed. They were sweet and damaged and brought a really interesting dynamic to a show that was already full of them. I love them!

Answered here, but I'd add to that Bessie x Bodie. They're a canon ship, but there are tragically like, no fics, and I feel like they were really underserved by the show. Like, a 23 year old being left with her 13-year-old sister when their mother dies and their dad goes to prison on a drug charge? While navigating an interracial relationship in a small town? It could've been a show all on its own, and I love them a lot.
