We're in an age now where women/girls can provide for themselves financially – and other things they usually depended on men for are changing, but that doesn't mean they don't still need a man. I think, fashionably (nothing applies to everyone) the lust for that 'dominant' man (Fifty Shades Of Grey etc.) is a result of feminism, and because of women's rights & the independence level they have now. Less of them need what a 'young man' or 'gentleman' has to offer so there's been a rise in curiosity with the 'extreme masculine' – but not the alpha 'brute' type (they've already been slated by feminists), the masochist narcissist type. The current most attractive trait for men in Western culture to have seems to be confidence, edging more towards arrogance.
I'm in no way anti-feminist or sexist, I am a strong believer in equal rights – but I am personally attracted to feminine females or 'girly girls' who are (not completely, but to a level) dependent on their man and I'd like to be a provider-type who can fend for and protect her, look after her when she's down and that sort of thing.
But as more young girls are taught to be independent and not be 'princesses who a prince will come and save', the less the girls are going to see the romance in that courageous but slightly stupid young man when he does come along to climb the tower and save her. She might be more inclined to opt for the bad guy because of his status & power.
Hopefully I'm chatting crap and the need for a genuine lover will always be routed in a girls primal imprint. How ugly and boring the world would be without that romance of masculine/feminine polarity but still with vulnerabilities on each side. It's also important to remember that all of this is theory and everything that happens in the real world is dependent on other people's consciousnesses – with this is mind it's important to stay in the present because anything can happen, everybody's perception and conscious make-up is different.
