uncooked rice : chapter one  i’m writing a new story based in boroughsburg by @potato-ballad-sims !! 🏙️ it follows the stories of descendants of asian-american immigrant families trying to make it on their own in the concrete jungle. however, the influences of class, family, and culture are always trailing behind them like shadows. 

Bzzzztttt..! a loud buzzer noise echoed throughout the empty apartment. Yuqi’s eyelids felt heavy as she struggled to open them. Yesterday was moving day. The apartment was still mostly dark. Thin streaks of sunlight miraculously squeezed their way through the shades. The lack of sunlight was thanks to the crappy location she’d picked out. Well, “pick” was the nice way to put it. It was the only place she could afford. It didn’t bother her though. The view of the back of the billboard hanging over the city was just as liberating as an oceanside view. She was on her own now. 

Bzzzzttttt…! The buzzer rang again.

She pushed the covers off, and walked over to the intercom.

“Who is it?”

“Landlord. I have a delivery for you. Could’ya let me in? I forgot my keys.”

“Coming!”

She quickly splashed some water on her face and looked at the pair of worn out jeans next to her bed. After giving them a quick sniff, she slipped them on, still buttoning as she walked out of her unit, waiting for the elevator.

Downstairs, she confirmed the landlord’s appearance through the dirty foggy windows. After she opened the door, he let himself in, cranking the stiff door open with his foot. She hadn’t yet checked the time since she’d woken up, but the outside air smelled like morning. It was definitely early. She could feel it in her bones.

“Here. This is the mail that came for you before you officially moved in.”

“Oh thank you.” she said as she received the mail, scanning to check the senders of the letters. Most of them were billing statements from the bank. She collected them for her parents since they were overseas. Once she confirmed she was staying behind, her parents had their billing addresses changed to her new location. 

“Thanks for coming down. I got it from here. I have some maintenance to take care of.”

They bid their farewells, and she went back upstairs to her unit. Stepping through the door, she walked with a weighty thud into a hard object. It was one of the boxes she hadn’t unpacked yet. She sighed and threw the mail into a pile near the door. 

In attempt to momentarily distract herself from the towers of boxes in the room, she checked her phone. The act only heightened her anxiety. Notifications displayed four missed calls from her mother.

“Shit..”

uncooked rice : chapter two

By the time Yuqi finished unpacking, the sky was dark, but the city wasn’t any quieter.

She felt a sharp pain shoot up her back. Her back likely cramped due to her crappy posture. No thanks to all the gym days she skipped. Her sweat drops felt prickly and numb on her aching arms and legs.

Her thoughts winded back to the missed calls from her mother. It was too late to call back by the time she had seen them. Her parents had been back in China for almost a week. They were still jet lagged, so their schedules were out of sync. She sent them a quick text back, telling them the move was going fine and she hoped they were well.

Wanting to clear her mind before bed, she decided to try out the bathtub. One of the unexpected luxuries her shithole apartment had to offer. She ran the faucet for 20 minutes, but the water was lukewarm at best. Figuring this was the best she was going to get tonight, she stripped out of her clothes and stepped into the bath.

While she bathed, thoughts clouded her mind. Wading in the water, she realized she was truly alone now. It was her choice, but at the same time she had no choice. It was either: follow her parents back to China, or stay and start over in America. It meant the possibility of repeating her parents mistakes, but that wasn’t an option either.

Her existence in America was an oxymoron. She was the second chance of her family’s second chance.

She remembered how her parents pleaded with her to go back with them.

“We have no money here” her father said, spitting the words out to mask any sense of shame in his voice.

“Please come with us, you love it back in China! Remember your aunties and uncles and cousins? They’ll want to see you again” said her mother trying desperately.

Truthfully, Yuqi couldn’t recall the faces of any of her extended family members. Oddly enough, the first few years of her life, she couldn’t recall the faces of her mother and father. She was raised by those exact family members whose faces she’d forgotten by now while her parents raised money to bring their young child to America.

“You can’t be this stubborn!”

She couldn’t remember who uttered this line, but the words rang in both her parents voices.

Draining the tub, she felt cold water drip from the bottom of her hair, onto other parts of her body. The wetness didn’t bother her. Strangely numb, she felt disconnected to her body. Her touch felt foreign on her own flesh as she dried herself off. She existed somewhere in the air, like a rain cloud, always on the move but never knowing where to stay.

Laying in bed, she stared up above. A murky water puddle stained the low hanging ceiling above. Droplets started to condense off of it. Closing her eyes, she drifted to sleep, listening to the train tracks above her apartment.
