I'm an Australian so my opinion on this is invalid solely because I can't vote in the US, but what exactly are your hopes if (Let us hope) Bernie Sanders becomes president? I feel that the best outcome would be that his independent status allows him to sway the saner members of the left and right and start getting things done, but I can't help but fear that both houses would stone ball him out of petty spite. Your thoughts on the matters?
Well, he’s running as Democrat even though he typically has been an Independent. I guess my hopes would be he would make some bigger important changes in the right direction. But like you say, it’s hard to say how much he’d be able to accomplish, even if he stays as far left as he says he is, considering there’s the question of congress not cooperating with him and getting in his way, which happened with Obama even though Obama is a lot more conservative/moderate.
But I still think he could at least veto some bad legislation and be a good influence in the government and spearhead positive changes, de-escalate US military action, and appoint the kind of people who will do good work. There’s also the high likelihood he wouldn’t win the Democratic nominee or get elected due to being so far left, though.
FYI: I’d avoid using words like “saner” to qualify better politics considering the ableist connotations.
