The Ancient Mistery
A warm cavernous space.
Minecraft Longplay: Underground Cavern Project: Part 6 (No Commentary)
Buried
“The distress signal came from under the surface,” Allura says as the paladins fly their lions down to the planet. “This is a planet where they all live in underground caves and caverns. There was something that caused them to go underground, but I cannot remember what.”
“That’s alright, Princess,” Shiro says. “Keep your eyes and ears peeled, everyone. Going underground isn’t the greatest idea in the lions so we’re gonna be going on foot once we get down to the surface.”
A chorus of agreement. Once they land, the five of them head into the system of underground tunnels and caverns.
“We should separate so we can cover more ground,” Shiro says.
Pidge doesn’t look thrilled with the idea, but doesn’t say anything.
“It doesn’t feel like a good idea to separate,” Hunk says. “What if we get lost?”
“We have trackers in everyone’s suits,” Shiro answers. “If we lose you, we’ll just find you.”
“Wait, how long have we had trackers in the suits?” Lance asks.
“After we got separated in space, the princess and Coran thought that it would be best for us to have a way to find us if they lost us again,” Shiro answers. “Kinda made me feel like an item at the time the way they said it, but I just chalked it up to them being aliens and not knowing how to say certain things without it coming across a certain way.”
Lance shrugs. “She can talk to me however she wants to.”
Keith swiftly jabs an elbow into Lance’s ribs, to which the two start bickering.
“Hunk, you’ll go with Pidge if it makes you feel better. Keith, Lance, and I will split up and search the other areas.”
Lance and Keith stop bickering. Shiro sighs, contemplating how to get them to get along. At least, not so publicly dislike each other. Hunk and Pidge split off from the group first, when the first tunnel shows up. Lance splits off next, leaving Keith and Shiro walking in pace with each other in comfortable silence.
“Can I ask you something?” Keith asks after a short while of quiet.
“Of course,” Shiro answers.
“Why did you…?”
A rumble causes Keith to cut off his question as the two look above them.
The ceiling seems to be crumbling.
“We need to go,” Shiro says.
Shiro gets a couple of feet towards the exit before it completely collapses on them.
“Hunk?” Pidge shouts, her leg pinned down by debris.
Hunk was right next to her when the ceiling fell in, and she can’t see him now.
“Hunk!”
Her breathing starts picking up and she cries out for Hunk. She quickly pulls herself together and tries to assess the damage to her leg. It’s definitely broken, but maybe not completely crushed. She can’t really feel it much, so definitely not a good sign.
“Pidge?” Hunk’s voice is weak, but she can hear him.
“Hunk, I’m here!”
“Hey, Pidge. I’m… I’m glad you’re alright.”
“I’m glad you’re alright too. What’s your condition?”
“I’m pretty sure I’m completely pinned down by rocks,” Hunk says. “It’s kinda hard to breathe.”
“Just don’t panic. It’ll make it harder.”
“I’m actually not too worried about it.”
The statement fills Pidge with dread, making her wanna cry. She starts trying to find a way to get herself out from under this rock. There’s nothing here to help her though.
“Hunk, I need you to stay with me,” Pidge says.
“I’m… here.”
“Okay, talk to me about that new recipe you’re gonna try when we get back to the castle.”
“Do you mean me trying to make enchiladas for Lance?” Hunk asks.
“Yep, that.”
“I mean… It's just enchiladas.” Hunk grunts. “It’s not gonna be exactly the same, because that would be impossible. But I just want Lance to feel better.”
“Yeah, I totally get that. That’s part of the reason why I pushed so hard for us to get that Earth gaming console. It’s just so you to go so far out of your way to make Lance feel better.”
Hunk laughs, then coughs.
“It’s gonna be okay,” Pidge says. “The others are gonna come get us.”
“That’s… Great.”
“Come on, I need you to stay.”
“I’m…” A long pause.
“Hunk?”
No response.
“Hunk? Come on.”
Still no response.
“Hunk, please,” Pidge cries. “Hunk, don’t go.”
The placement of the rocks makes it amazing that Shiro survived at all. It’s a tight space and it’s dark, but he’s uninjured aside from where he hit his head. Shiro notices how small the space is and he feels his chest tighten. He tries to take his mind off of the space, but it feels like the space is getting tighter the longer he’s there. He closes his eyes and tries to regulate his breathing, hoping that if he regulates his breathing, he won’t have a panic attack.
“Shiro!” That voice belongs to Keith.
“Keith?” Shiro calls back out.
“Where are you?” Keith asks.
“I’m this way!”
“Just keep talking. I think I’m getting closer.”
“Well I’m pretty sure I’m about to have a panic attack. Otherwise, I’m alright. Are you injured?”
“No, I’m not injured. Red fell in with the ceiling and he shielded me from most of the debris. I think I found you. It's surprising that the rocks fell like this.”
“That’s nice, Keith.”
“Sorry, got distracted. How are you doing now?”
“A little better.”
“Haha, I made it better.”
Shiro laughs even though it’s getting hard to breathe.
“I have an idea, but I’m gonna need you to trust me and question it later.”
“Okay, shoot. Better than causing myself to hyperventilate.”
“I want you to use your metal hand’s power and punch the rock on your left.”
“My left?”
“Mhm. Your left. It would be my right.”
“Okay, am I attempting to destroy it?”
“As much as you can.”
Shiro punches the rock until it crumbles away, leaving a small opening.
“Is there an opening?” Keith asks.
“Yeah, but I don’t know if I can fit through it,” Shiro answers.
“For the love of God, Shiro. Stop panicking and trust me. We do this all the time, even if most of the time the roles are reversed.”
Shiro nods, then squeezes through the small space. He barely fits and it takes exceptionally longer to get to the end, but when he does, he comes out in an open area. He feels the tightness in his chest lessen as he takes in air.
“Shiro!”
He turns to see Keith running over. He hugs Keith when Keith reaches him. Keith pats his back.
“Thanks, Otouto.”
“Of course, anytime. We should find the others though.”
Shiro nods.
Lance wakes up with a small child in his face. He tries to back away and finds that he’s pinned to the ground by some kind of strong vines. The child runs away from him and out of sight. He starts trying to break free of the vines on his wrists, to no luck.
“That blasted collapse nearly took our village out,” he hears someone say.
He hears something respond, but that is definitely not English.
“He is not an angry god. He’s merely a traveler who got caught in our trap.”
Another response that Lance can’t understand.
“I understand that we’ve never had any of the caverns collapse, but we’ve been living here a long time. All things start to crumble with age.”
Angry hisses.
“Well, if he is an angry god, then he’ll stop us from having him for dinner.”
The noise fades away, so Lance starts looking around. There’s two others tied up with the vines that go into the ground.
“There’s no point in fighting,” one of them says. “We’ll never escape these. The only thing that loosens them is with the guard. We’ll be dinner tonight, so at least you won’t have to stay here long.”
“Wait, you guys too? Don’t you guys live here?” Lance asks.
The second one nods.
“We’re a very powerful culture. We eat the weaker members to become stronger, so that our race survives,” the first one says.
Lance’s face scrunches up as he starts thinking about how to get out.
“You find it distasteful?”
“Yeah, not really a fan of cannibalism. Didn’t know that anyone really was, but I always enjoy being proven wrong. Keith and Hunk are not gonna believe this.”
“Friends of yours?”
Lance nods. Instead of trying to free his hand, he tries to move it enough towards him to get his bayard.
“What are you doing?” The alien’s volume is raised.
“Ssh,” Lance hisses.
The alien closes his mouth. Lance ends up dislocating his shoulder, but his bayard appears in his hand. Lance bites his lip so he doesn’t cry out. The aliens’ eyes are wide in shock. Lance shoots the vine against his right ankle and it releases his ankle, going into the ground. He shoots the rest of the vines and stands up.
“Don’t leave us,” the second one pleads.
“I’m not leaving you here.” Lance shoots the vines on both of them. “I don’t care if you want to stay here, but I recommend that we get out of here and find the rest of my team. They’ll help us get out of here safely.”
“If the others were in the caverns, they most likely didn’t make it,” the first one says.
“You don’t know my team like I do. No rocks are gonna take them out.”
Lance and the other two walk through the ruins of the caverns in silence until he can hear sobs. He runs towards the sound and stops short when he sees Hunk half-buried under rocks.
“Hunk!”
He runs over and starts trying to move the rock off of Hunk. The aliens walk over and easily take the rock off of Hunk and toss it to the side. Lance kneels down and checks Hunk’s pulse. It’s weak, and he’s barely breathing.
“Shit. Shit. Shit,” Lance mutters. “Can you guys stay with him while I try to find Pidge?”
They nod in unison. Lance jogs towards the sound of the sobs.
“Pidge?”
“Lance?” The sobs stop.
“Keep talking! I can’t hear you!”
“Hunk,” Pidge cries.
“Hunk’s fine, but he won’t be for long if we don’t get out of here.”
“Lance, Hunk was crushed.”
“Yeah, the pod will fix him.”
“Do you think my bayard would hold up this rock long enough to get you out?” Lance asks.
“Without crushing it? I don’t think so.”
“Worth the risk.”
“Lance, don’t you even think about it.”
Lance does it anyway and once the rock is up enough, he slides Pidge out. He grabs his bayard quickly. Shiro and Keith run up as the rock slams back down. The walls start to shake, but stop before anymore debris falls.
“Where’s Hunk?” Shiro asks.
“That way,” Lance answers, nodding in the direction. “He’s badly injured and needs immediate attention. Shiro, can you take Pidge?”
“Yeah, of course.”
Shiro takes Pidge from Lance, who then heads towards Hunk. Keith’s a step behind him. The two get Hunk up as carefully as they can and the seven of them head towards the cave exit. The lions are waiting for them.
Once Lance and Keith get Hunk settled in the second seat of Blue, Keith runs to Red. They take off and Allura manages to call Gold back to the Castle. Everyone lands in the hangar, then head to the infirmary. Shiro, who’s carrying an unconscious Pidge bridal-style, gets her into a pod without question. It’s a little more difficult for them to get Hunk into one but once they do, it slides shut behind him.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be able to heal all of his injuries,” Allura says. “No one this injured has gone into a healing pod.”
“He’s gotta be fine,” Lance says. “Hunk can’t die. We have gone through too much for him to die.”
Allura gives Lance a sad smile, then heads over to Shiro. They whisper for a minute, then Allura heads out.
“Come on, no point loitering in here,” Shiro says.
Then he basically shoos everyone out of the infirmary.
Pidge sits on the step, waiting for the healing process to finish. It’s early in the morning so no one else is awake. She hasn’t slept in the two days since she got out of the pod. She’s been waiting for Hunk to come out. She can’t sleep until she knows that Hunk’s okay. She can hear Jade anxiously asking her why she’s still awake in her head, but she’s ignoring her to the best of her ability.
The pod beeps, then opens. Pidge jumps up and runs over. Hunk’s eyes open and he immediately falls forward. He catches himself on the side of the pod.
“Hunk.”
He turns towards her, then gives her a small smile. “You were right, we’re fine.”
Pidge helps him to the steps, where he sits down.
“You feel fine?”
“Besides a little sore, yeah. I really thought… It’s not important. Thanks for not giving up on me.”
“Not just me. Lance too.”
“Of course, what are friends for?”
Pidge nods.
Lance and Keith come in, both noticing that Hunk’s already out at the same time. They walk over and are thrilled that Hunk’s alright. The four of them talk until Shiro comes in.
“Wow, guess I’m late to the party,” he says.
“Where were you?” Lance asks. “We went to your room looking for you.”
“Command Center,” Shiro answers. “Couldn’t sleep. I’m glad to see that you’re better.”
“Yeah, me too,” Hunk replies.
Not long after that, they head to breakfast after Coran demands that they come immediately.
