• Barbara Rubin who famously introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet underground via Gerrard Malanga, burst on the scene in 1963 with her film Christmas on Earth at age 18, and was soon a close friend of Jonas Mekas and the filmmakers around the Cooperative. She’d befriended just about everyone in the NYC underground by the age of 20, even making it onto a Bob Dylan record sleeve, also it wasn’t long before she was tightly in Allen’s orbit, meeting him in London in 1965 to help organize the International Poetry Incarnation, that 7000 attended at Royal Albert Hall, and not long after convinced Allen to purchase a small farm in upstate New York. Converting to Hasidism before she was 30 she moved to France where she died in childbirth at the age of 35. A recent documentary “Barbara Rubin and the Exploding New York Underground” explores her short but intense life. Here snapped by Allen, London 1965.
