After getting a full day to recover from their jetlag, the class had gathered around for breakfast in the hotel dining area, which was a bit on the smaller side for a class the size of Peter’s. Peter and Ned decide to take their breakfast outside to one of the tables lined outside the hotel, where they are joined by MJ.
“buongiorno, come hai dormito/Good morning, how did you sleep?” the melodic voice from two days ago asks. The italian girl approaches them, pitcher of water with sliced lemons in hand. She smiles, eyes making their way towards Peter.
“Ottimo, grazie/Great.” Ned smiles. “E tu/And you?”
The nameless Italian girl smiles at him as she fills the empty glasses of water. Betty, having just finished serving herself breakfast from the hotel, swoops in and sits next to Ned.
“Il tuo italiano è molto buono/You Italian is very good.” the girl tells Ned, who in turn beams. Betty squeezes his hand and congratulates him, going on in english about how she helped her boyfriend study before coming here.
When MJ gets up to clear her dishes, the italian girl fusses, telling her to sit down while she gets everything. Peter gets up in a frenzy, taking the plates that she can’t carry and follows her into the kitchen.
“Grazie mille/Thank you so much…” she trails off, leaving the sentence open for Peter to tell her his name.
The two of them put the dirty dishes down in the sink and turn to look at each other.
“E tu/And you?” Peter asks nervously. She smiles and offers him her hand to shake.
“Il mio nome è y/n. Piacere di conoscerti/My name is y/n. Nice to meet you.”
“Alright everyone, today is all about touring the areas surrounding Bergamo. You should all have gotten a guide with different sightseeing spots, all which are great to practice your Italian. Stay in groups of at least three, don’t forget to check in at three, and stay safe everyone. Dinner is at six!” The italian teacher announces to the group of students. As soon as he is finished talking, the high schoolers disperse into groups, getting together to plan their day. Peter, MJ, Ned, and Betty looked through their copy of the guide of things to do around Bergamo, trying to all decide between touring through the Accademia Carrara, an art museum located in modern Bergamo, or visiting the Rocca museum and the Venetian walls.
“Let’s do the art museum. We can get out of old Bergamo and see modern Bergamo where all the newer things are. I read that the piazza there has really cool shops and food.” MJ says as she flips through one of the pamphlets she had grabbed from the hotel lobby.
“Don’t you think it would be interesting to go and look at the defensive walls? It’s gorgeous, and there’s this spot where we can look out from.” Betty flips through different pictures on her phone, trying to make her point. MJ cocks an eyebrow at her.
“Betty, it’s just a wall.” MJ turns to look at Peter expectantly. “Parker, what do you think?”
Petter hesitates, looking down at the manual in his hands. He hadn’t been paying that much attention to it while his friends talked, but rather to Flash across the piazza. He was talking to y/n near the hotel entrance, telling her something that made her laugh.
“Earth to Parker, are you listening?” MJ waves a hand in front of Peter’s face, snapping him out of his thoughts.
“Sorry, uh. I’m for the Academia Carrara. We get to ride that old funicular.” Peter suggests, clearing his throat. MJ nods approvingly, taking out some cash for the ticket.
“Anyone else in?” she asks, looking around at the group. Betty gives in, as does Ned.
Realizing he doesn’t have his wallet, Peter excuses himself and heads back to the hotel. He almost bumps into y/n on his way down. She holds her book to her chest, blushing.
“Mi dispiace/I’m sorry.” Peter apologizes. Y/N shakes her head and smiles.
“Va tutto bene. Dove stai andando/Everything is alright. Where are you going?” she asks, tucking a strand of her loose hair behind her ear. Peter blanks on his Italian for a second, opening and closing his mouth like a fish. Y/N giggles, shaking her head.
“It is okay, Peter. I speak little bit of english.” y/n’s english is thich with an Italian accent, but Peter is still surprised. She tried speaking to him in his native language just the same way he’d spoken hers.
“Oh. Your english is very good.”
“We’re going to an art museum, down in the modern side of Bergamo. Accademia Carrara?”
“Oh sì, il museo d'arte/Yes, the art museum! Very good.” she smiles. Her eyes drift behind him, and she stands straighter. “I tuoi amici ti stanno aspettando/Your friends are waiting for you. Maybe you should leave.”
Indeed, Peter’s friends were waving for him to join them, pointing at imaginary watches on their wrists. Peter rolls his eyes and grins before turning back to y/n.
“I’ll see you later?” he asks. She smiles and shrugs.
“Perhaps. Goodbye Peter.”
After going through the art museum on the modern side of Bergamo, Peter and his friends stop for lunch at a cafe called the Caffe Degli Artisti, where they snag a table outdoors. They eat some sandwiches and drink coffee that is local, and relax a little after eating. The afternoon sun shone down on the group, warming up their skin nicely during a slightly windy day.
They all take the funicular back into old Bergamo, finding that they have some more time to go to the Bergamo Venetian walls and walk around. The view outside was beautiful, with lush green trees below, the weathered terracotta roofs stretching out as far as the eye can see. Ned and Peter look out at the scenery together while MJ and Betty indulge themselves with a conversation on the history of the city they were in.
“So, the girl from the hotel is pretty nice.” Ned says, casually bringing up y/n. Peter avoids looking at Ned, afraid his face would give away what he was thinking.
“I heard Flash saying how he was going to try and get her alone. I think he’s pretty interested in her.”
“Flash is interested in anything with a pulse.” Peter rolls his eyes. He bites his tongue when he realizes how this sounds, though Ned is already laughing.
“Dude, he’d kill you if he heard you say that out loud.”
“Who’d kill Peter if he heard him say what?” MJ asks, arms crossed as the girls join the boys once more. Ned repeats Peter’s words, which make MJ smile.
“We should get going, dinner is about to start.” Betty says, taking Ned’s hand in hers. The couple leads the way back to the hotel, where their classmates are already gathering around.
Dinner varies from different pastas to risottos, with dessert being gelato. Y/N flies around the room, helping the students with drinks and cleaning their empty dishes. An older man and a few younger kids, which Peter assumes are her family, go about the room helping as well.
“MJ has graciously offered to help me with something I’m writing for the school news, so I think the two of us are going to head out for the night. Is that okay?” Betty, places her hand over Ned’s, making sure it was okay that she was leaving him early for the night. The two share a kiss and bid each other goodnight before the girls get up.
“See you tomorrow, losers.” MJ salutes the boys and stands with Betty. She stuffs her hands in the pockets of her jacket, following Betty as they head to the reading area of the hotel.
“I think I’m going to get started on my journal entry. Want to head back to the room?” Ned asks as he sets down his glass of water. Peter glances over in y/n’s direction, finding her standing near the doorway that leads to the back garden of the hotel. Her hair is loose around her shoulders, cascading in messy waves as the wind blows through the open sections of the building. She catches his eyes, smiling at him shyly.
“Uh, you know I think I’m going to hang out here for a second. I’ll text you when I’m on my way up, okay?”
Once Ned has gone back up to their room, Peter gets up and begins making his way to y/n. He wanted to talk to her again, spend a little time with her before the day was over.
“Penis Parker, where do you think you’re going?” Flash intersects the path Peter was going in, leaning against one of the tables with a smirk on his face. Peter steps back, unsure of what to say.
“Let me stop you right there. If you’re planning on talking to our hot foreign friend here, don’t. I’ve already set my sight on her, so don’t even think about it.”
“What if she wants to talk to me?”
“Well you better not try anything, Parker. I’m watching you.”
“Va tutto bene qui/Is everything okay here?” a soft, concerned voice asks. The two boys look up at y/n, who is frowning. She holds a damp towel in her hands, which she had likely been using to wipe down the empty tables before approaching the boys.
Flash gives her a smile and nods. ‘Tutto è perfetto, bello. Sto solo parlando con il mio amico qui/Everything is perfect, beautiful. I'm just talking to my friend here.” he glances at Peter. “Right, Peter?”
Peter nods slowly, to which Flash grins approvingly to. He leaves, joining his little friend group once more.
“Stai bene? Sembra un bullo/Are you okay? He looks like a bully.” y/n asks in a concerned tone. “You should not let him talk to you in that way.”
Her cool hand is on Peter’s, giving him a soft but firm squeeze. Peter looks down at their hands and blushes.
“Uh, I. Yeah. I know. I actually.” the boy takes a deep breath. “Volevo sapere se ti piacerebbe passare del tempo con me. Fuori in giardino/I wanted to know if you'd like to spend time with me. Out in the garden?”
Y/N smiles, glancing back at Flash before giving Peter a nod. “Sì. Good thing you are not letting that boy put you down. You would not have asked me otherwise.”
Y/N asks Peter to hold on for a second before going into the kitchen. She’s in there for a couple of minutes before returning back to Peter, this time with a sweater in hand rather than a towel.
Peter didn’t bother to see if Flash was watching him with y/n as they walked out to the hotel garden. All he cared about was that he was getting to spend time with her. He was going to talk to a pretty girl about whatever the conversation brought, underneath the stars, in a different country. How much better could it get?
The pair settles on a concrete bench outlooking the city below. The city lights twinkle in the dark, with the sounds of the city far away, faint to those above. It added to the ambience of the passing wind. Y/N slipped on her sweater and smoothed the skirt of her dress before looking over in Peter’s direction.
“Do you like here?” she asks. Peter smiles and nods.
“So far, yeah. We’re going to Milan tomorrow.”
“Oh, Milan is wonderful. Il cibo è/The food is,” Y/N kisses her fingertips and blows a kiss, signifying that the food was delicious. Peter laughs and shakes his head. “Com'è il tuo libro finora/How is your book so far?”
“Buono. Stavo pensando che potremmo leggere di nuovo insieme/Good. I was thinking that we could read it together again. Only if you want.” Peter adds the last part nervously, scratching the back of his neck.
Y/N laughs softly and nods. She asks him to hold on for a bit, and disappears inside. Once she reappears, she has her copy of Call Me By Your Name in her hands. She hands it to him, asking him to read it to her.
The two relax on the bench, sitting comfortably close to each other. They lean over the book reading, y/n helping Peter with whatever words he stumbled on. It was a wonderful way to pass time, so much so that Peter hadn’t noticed how late it had gotten until someone called out for y/n.
“My father.” she sighs, getting up. Peter follows suit, handing y/n back her book.
“I should probably get going too.”
The two stand in front of each other for a beat too long, neither one making a move. Peter thinks about leaning over to hug her, but then thinks about how that would be weird. He didn't want to mess it up, whatever ‘it’ was.
In the end, it is y/n who does something. She leans up and pecks both of his cheeks, her lips lingering for a second before pulling back.
“Tomorrow, I see you.” she says.
“Tomorrow.” Peter confirms. Y/N gives him a satisfied smile before walking back inside to where she had been beckoned. Peter watches her figure disappear into the shadows, running a hand through his hair. He couldn’t believe it. He had something to look forward to.
