so this is only tangentially related to pie but do you know the difference between caramel sauce and butterscotch? bc my whole family loves caramel but hates butterscotch and i have failed entirely to find out what actually makes it different (other than the taste, of course)
haha I can taste the difference but it never occurred to me to figure out WHY they’re different? I’ve found more than one source that claim the difference is:
CARAMEL: white sugar, butter, cream if you’re making sauce, vanilla
BUTTERSCOTCH: brown sugar, butter, cream if you’re making sauce, vanilla and salt probably. I guess it’s easier because you don’t have to melt and caramelize the white sugar which is where all the mistakes happen lol
Oh plus from what I can tell with caramel the butter is added last, and with butterscotch the butter is put in first.
