Well, well, well.  Guess what time it is?

On April 21 2016, a large group of people got together with the plan to make an Undertale Dating Sim.

Today, we finally release a demo.  It isn’t exactly the vision we had in the beginning, but things like this never are.

On a personal note, I want to take a minute to thank all of you for your never ending support, our giant crowd of testers, all the friends I have made in this project, and all of the people who put way too many hours to get this to become a reality.

It’s here! The long-awaited demo is finally here.

We’ve been through a lot here with this demo and I probably sound like I’m parroting Wilson over here but I wanted to take this chance to thank everyone who stuck with us and supported us through all of this, as well as everybody who has worked so hard to make a piece of our dream come true. I’m truly grateful for the undying love and support we’ve been shown.

I also want to take a second and thank Wilson here for putting up with all of us and helping us get this demo out! It’s been a bumpy road and I’m pretty sure there is some holy force at work here that has given you the patience to put up with us but I’m thankful nonetheless.

This project became my baby at some point during the creation of all of this and it’s making me kinda mushy just thinking about everything and releasing the demo. I love you guys and thank you! ~Becca

Undertale Dating Simulator: Why I’m Not Writing or Playing it.

So I imagine that a few people have glanced at this lovely project with interest, as me and a few friends did. The idea of a dating sim that aged up Frisk, Chara and Asriel/Flowey, but still only allowed a friendship route, was awe-inspiring. In fact, two of us were interested enough that we applied to be writers, and surprise of all surprises, we actually got the parts!

And this is how we were writers on a dating sim project for a good half a week before refusing to write for them.

The Frisk/Chara friendship arc plays blatantly on mental health stereotyping to do the same tried and true mental health arc that people know and love: Evil is “illness” and needs to be “cured”.

Honestly, coming into this as a writer, both me and my friend had some really high hopes. The premise they originally had for Frisk and Chara’s arc was not only respectful to the characters, but to the fandom. Think Chara’s evil? They had you covered. Think they’re good? They had you covered. In between? Heck, they had you covered. It didn’t rely on mental health issues AT ALL to make a point, or carry the plot, and abruptly, this changed.

Be respectful of the fact that this plot was “written in a day”, because that’s what you do when people feed you a pile of shit. You be respectful

We were horrified. There was an immense amount of pulling hair and disbelieving laughter as we tried to comprehend how this could go from something so respectful to essentially putting these kids out for the mental health slaughter. Mental health hadn’t come up for this route before. Mental health didn’t need to.

But it just kept getting better.

Quite frankly, I don’t give a damn how much or how little Chara is in the game. The fact that the outline relies on blurring the lines between DID and schizophrenia, and taking the time to remind us that Chara as a character has no real reason to exist outside of being the culmination of someone else’s mental illness, something that can be expunged, is literally disgusting. This is what players will be forced to comply with going down this route. This is what the younger fans of this fandom will be influenced by.

And this is precisely what you’ll be getting. A lovely serve of “haha well I minored in psychology before dropping out so it’s fine” and “well my brother’s wife’s brothers twice removed (WHO HAVE BPD I KNOW PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS) said this was fine so it is”.

I want to make it clear we addressed these concerns. We spoke with them in regards to how this reads, we made very clear what it was that we were not happy with. And call it absolute cynicism, but it was the one chance we were willing to give.

When “handicap” became the official, medical term of the day, well. That’s when we knew it was time to get the fuck out of dodge.

We Still Need Your Help!

With the demo finally out of the way, we want to buckle down and finish all the writing and art for the game. But we need more help doing that! Due to time and life, we’ve lost a lot of our writers and coders. We’re now re-opening writing applications! Our application process has changed quite a bit, so if you’ve previously applied, you will need to reapply. If you can’t apply, please spread the word that we’re looking for help!

Updates!

Hope everybody had a great 31st! Testing is going very well and the bugs are coming in few and far between! Just wanted to give a big shout out to this round of testers.  They have been a massive help.  It also doesn’t hurt that their constant praise gives me energy...

Good News / Bad News

Wilson here!

Sorry for such the long absence.  *turns chair around to painfully sit in it like a counselor* Let’s get real.

The project has hit a little bit of a lull.  It happens.  It’s been over a year and a half.  Undertale fever has bottomed out.  The curse of all the other fan games. However!  What we have, at the moment, is a giant pile of code / art / script / music that our team all put a year of their lives into.  I would be doing them a disservice if all of that went to waste and disappeared into the aether.

About a month ago, I did a super hard push to get the Ruins area of our game compiled into a demo for you in order to get an opinion on how we were doing so far.  The game itself was not like normal dating sims, and being as experimental as it was, I needed confirmation that it was an approach worth pursuing.  Then I got sick.

Due to real life pressures, work, school, and all that other fun stuff, the leadership crew of this project have come to terms that we can’t keep this up.  A few have already dropped out.  A few plan on keeping the torch burning after this demo drops.  I am not one of them.  But this isn’t about me.  This is about you!

We need help.  I need a few volunteers to help me test the demo and give me feedback on the current situation.  If the general consensus is that my design is a big pile of dog stuff, then the group will decide on how to deliver the material we came up with.  If it isn’t, then I will probably pour energy into finishing it up into a nice deliverable demo.

Testing update!

Thank you so much for the *100 ish* emails and messages we have gotten since yesterday.

I’m no longer taking any applications for testing, because I don’t know if I can manage this many of you!  As people are no longer able to test, I will be pulling additional people out of the pile that I have.

Hopefully this will speed up the bug fixing considerably.

Thank you for the wonderful messages as well, and know that your support means a lot to all of us.
