Tbh my real Undertale hot take is that I can at least understand why people like Toriel even if I personally don't like her, but I genuinely do not get the rabid hate so much of the fandom has for Asgore. Like maybe I have weird priorities as a person but at least Asgore is honest with Frisk/The Player. He doesn't try to hide what he's doing or shy away from how horrible it is, he doesn't lie to you and try to trick you into staying or claim to care and then refuse to ever talk to you again. He never pretends what he's doing is anything less than what he is doing, he faces you and allows you the dignity of facing your own death, there's no deception. I just respect that a lot more than Toriel's plan to just trick you into never leaving and deny you your autonomy until you beat yourself up to prove, not that you deserve to make your own choices about your life, but that her plan wouldn't make you so miserable you'd rather die.

Plus Toriel legit says she's upset with Asgore for not just taking the first heart and then leaving and killing enough humans to break the barrier as if the king of monsters popping out of the earth and killing several people would like, make humans okay with them coming back or convince them they come in peace, or as if a monster being perceived to have killed a human is what started all of this shit in the first place?? She's okay with murdering innocent people to get out, she just doesn't like how Asgore is going about killing innocent people to get out.

So yeah I just don't see how she's better than Asgore or why everyone hates Asgore so much. Like everyone loves all the other characters who tried to kill you, why do y'all hate him so much.

[I have only played Deltarune pt. 1 please do not spoil the next parts for me I am legit only talking about Undertale and no other game, idc how the characters are in DR bcs those are different characters.]

I'm just like...bro it was given an opening that's presented in the style of a fairytale what do you mean I wasn't supposed to see Toriel as this story's 'scary old witch who kidnaps you through deception and maybe tries to kill you' character that should be distrusted right from the start? Why did everyone immediately fall in love with her she literally is kidnapping you??? I get that Frisk is a kid but ngl if someone treated me like that when I was Frisk's age I would hate it and hate them. I went in blind and it truly confuses me that everyone was acting like Toriel was the best mom ever when she KIDNAPS YOU??? Her part of the game was you realizing you're in 10 Cloverfield Lane and getting the fuck away from the weird lady pretending to be your mom who is protecting you but actually trapping you forever against your will to keep you safe from the outside world!! It was like a horror movie!! Why am I the only bitch who got scared and angry rather than loving her right away??

Anyway sorry I'm high Toriel is fine I just have never come away from a story with that vast of a gap between my expirience of a character and seemingly everyone else's.
