Quando ero adolescente avevamo un rituale con i miei amici amanti della musica: masterizzavamo CD con le nostre ultime scoperte musicali e ce li regalavamo a vicenda. Un sacco di mp3, canzoni, artisti e generi musicali. Condividevamo tutto ciò che ci piaceva. Avete anche voi in qualche angolo pile di cd-r con le scritte a pennarello sopra o, per i più antichi, cassette registrate piene di nomi scritti a penna sui minuscoli fogli di copertina?

Il decimo ed ultimo episodio di Under the Label è proprio come uno di quei cd o cassette (o playlist digitali per i meno antichi). C’è di tutto dentro, dalle grandi orchestre ai progetti solisti, dal cantautorato all’hyperpop, dal black metal all’improvvisazione libera e molto altro ancora. Due ore e mezza, una selezione delle mie uscite preferite, le più belle ed interessanti per me, del 2024 ed inizio 2025. Un regalo per ringraziarvi di aver ascoltato Under the Label e per aver condiviso insieme questi mesi e questa musica! GRAZIE!

Title: BEST OF 2024 - 2025

When I was a teenager we had a ritual with my music-loving friends: we used to burn CDs with our latest music discoveries. Tons of MP3s, songs, artists and musical genres. We shared everything we liked. Do you also have piles of CD-Rs with marker writings on them, or for the oldest ones, recorded cassette tapes full of names written with a  pen on the tiny cover sheets?

The tenth and final episode of Under the Label is just like one of those CDs or cassettes (or digital playlists for the younger generations) that we used to share between friends. There's everything in it, from large orchestras to solo projects, from singer-songwriters to hyperpop, from black metal to free improvisation and much more. Two and a half hours, a selection my favourites releases of 2024 and early 2025. A gift to thank you all for listening to Under the Label and for sharing these months and this music together! Nel nono e penultimo episodio andiamo alla scoperta dell’improvvisazione libera e di alcune delle sue principali caratteristiche. Avremo il piacere di sentire anche le voci di Francesca Naibo, Francesco Cigana, Nick Acorne e Kamal Sabran (che ringrazio dal profondo del cuore per il loro contributo), musicisti che hanno fatto dell’improvvisazione il nucleo della loro ricerca sonora. Sarà un viaggio sorprendente, un racconto collettivo fatto di suoni e parole. Orecchie e menti aperte, qui il suono è libero!

> MARCO COLONNA – Yokai

Polistrumentista, compositore, improvvisatore e scrittore, Marco Colonna è uno dei nomi più in vista del jazz italiano odierno. Si dedica da anni alla ricerca sul clarinetto basso per esplorare tutte le sfumature di questo strumento. In questo lavoro dialoga con Cristian Maddalena al shamisen ed elettronica e Fabrizio Spera alla batteria e percussioni.

> PIERO BITTOLO BON - Spelunker

Progetto solista di Piero Bittolo Bon. Utilizzando un sistema di microfoni costruito su misura e collegato in diverse posizioni al suo sassofono contralto, Bittolo Bon cattura risonanze e vibrazioni ultraterrene dal suo strumento acustico. Inserisce poi questi suoni catturati dai microfoni in sintetizzatori, drum machine e stompbox in tempo reale, creando viaggi improvvisati nel suono.

> DOOOM ORCHESTRA – Our Sea Lies Within

Fondata da Francesco Cigana nel 2018, DOOOM Orchestra è un collettivo padovano di giovani musicisti che indagano la pratica dell'improvvisazione. "Our Sea Lies Within" concentra l'esperienza accumulata in sei anni di studio e più di trenta performance e concerti site-specific. Un comune oceano di suoni che si materializza grazie alle forti connessioni tra i musicisti.

> C.O.R.N.! - Ona

Duo composto dai due maghi dell’improvvisazione Mykyta Prykhodchenko aka Nick Acorne (elettronica) e Patrick Wurzwallner (batteria). "Ona" è la decima uscita del meta-album "UNI C.O.R.N! 2" che consiste di 12 album eseguiti dal vivo (uno per ogni mese dell'anno) in diversi luoghi insoliti di Graz. "Ona" è stato registrato al Butcher's Barbershop, Graz.

> FRANCESCA NAIBO & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – Free Improvisation

Improvvisazione libera inedita di Francesca Naibo (chitarra elettrica, oggetti, effetti) e Andreij Rublev (no input mixer, live electronics). Registrato presso l’home studio di Rublev nel dicembre 2023.

> KAMAL SABRAN & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – No Distance

Improvvisazione libera di Kamal Sabran (sampler, sintetizzatore) e Andreij Rublev (no-input mixer, live electronics) registrata dal vivo il 23 aprile 2022 presso Exp.Sound.Lab, studio di registrazione nelle colline della provincia di Treviso, Italia.

> KAMAL SABRAN – Sound Medicine Vol 3

Kamal Sabran è un artista e ricercatore Malese. Ha un dottorato di ricerca in Arte e Design presso l'Università Tecnologica MARA. Insegna alla University of Science Malaysia. La sua pratica è interdisciplinare ed esiste all’intersezione tra arte, scienza e tecnologia. La sua opera artistica comprende musica sperimentale, performance art e installazioni. La pratica di Kamal è collaborativa e spesso persegue il contatto con altri artisti, musicisti, ricercatori e scienziati.

In the ninth episode we discover free improvisation and some of its main characteristics. Multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser and writer, Marco Colonna is one of the most prominent names in contemporary Italian jazz. He has dedicated himself to the bass clarinet for years to explore all the nuances of this instrument. In “Yokai” he plays with Cristian Maddalena on shamisen and electronics and Fabrizio Spera on drums and percussion.

> PIERO BITTOLO BON - Spelunker

Solo project of Piero Bittolo Bon. Using a custom made microphone system attached at different locations on his alto saxophone, Bittolo Bon captures unearthly resonances and vibrations from his acoustic instrument. Bittolo Bon feeds these captured tones into synthesizers, drum machines, and stompboxes in real time, creating improvised journeys into sound.

> DOOOM ORCHESTRA – Our Sea Lies Within

Founded by Francesco Cigana in 2018, DOOOM Orchestra is a Padua-based collective of young musicians investigating improvisational practice. "Our Sea Lies Within" concentrates the experience accumulated over six years of study and more than thirty site-specific performances and concerts. A common ocean of sound that materializes thanks to the strong connections between the musicians. 

> C.O.R.N.! - Ona

A duo consisting of the two well-educated but supergrounded improvisational sound wizards Mykyta Prykhodchenko aka Nick Acorne (Electronics) and Patrick Wurzwallner (Drums). “Ona” is the 10th release of the Meta album "UNI C.O.R.N! 2" which consists of 12 live performed albums (one per every month of the year) at different unusual places in Graz. “Ona” was recorded at Butcher's Barbershop, Graz.

> FRANCESCA NAIBO & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – Free Improvisation

Unreleased free improvisation by Francesca Naibo (electric guitar, objects, effects) and Andreij Rublev (no input mixer, live electronics). Recorded inRublev’s home studio in december 2023.

> KAMAL SABRAN & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – No Distance

A free improvisation by Kamal Sabran (sampler, synthesizer) and Andreij Rublev (no-input mixer, live electronics) recorded live on the 23rd of April 2022 at Exp.Sound.Lab, a recording studio in the hills of Treviso's province, Italy.

Kamal Sabran is an artist-researcher based in Malaysia. He has a PhD in Art and Design from the Universiti of Teknologi MARA. He is a teacher at the University of Science Malaysia. His practice is inter-disciplinary and exists at the intersection of art, science, and technology. His art work includes experimental music, performance art and installations. Kamal’s practice is collaborative and he frequently pursues opportunities with other artists, musicians, researchers and scientists.

Nel terzo episodio, Rublev ci porta alla scoperta della parola e del suo suono. Uno spaccato sulle possibili combinazioni di spoken word, rap, slam poetry con i linguaggi della musica contemporanea (dal funk al jazz, dal noise all’improvvisazione libera).

> ADDICT AMEBA desert-blues, paesaggi afrobeat, cavalcate latin rock e parentesi etio-jazz. L'album “Caosmosi” si arricchisce dei contributi di Joshua Idehen, poeta e cantante anglo-nigeriano in “Look At Us”, e di Rabii Brahim, attore e musicista tunisino, in “Ya Bled”.

> OSSA DI CANE è una band Nu-Jazz senese nata dall’incontro fra Giovanni Miatto e Alessandro Vagheggini, con l’intento di unire l’estetica dell’hip-hop a quella della musica contemporanea. “La Morte Del Re”, il loro primo album analizza l’Io più profondo dell’individuo in relazione ad una realtá che lo circonda e lo attraversa.

> YAO BOBBY & SIMON GRAB il rapper togolese e attivista politico Yao Bobby collabora con il noisemaker svizzero Simon Grab. Un'intensa battaglia sonora tra testi energici proiettati in un mondo sonoro oscuro di pulsazioni elettroniche grezze con un'attitudine dub e punk. Il loro lavoro è una forma molto cruda e improvvisata di hiphop sperimentale dal vivo, Freeform Rap e Noise.

> THE SWAMP FAM misteriosa, oscura, distorta, lisergica e grottesca rivisitazione dell’hip hop e delle sue voci, con parole che sembrano venire da chissà quale oltretomba delle sample library.

> FRANCESCA NAIBO in “So Much Time” guarda al suo passato e alla sua evoluzione nel tempo. Questo l'ha portata a recuperare vecchi nastri registrati con un mangianastri economico quando aveva circa 8 anni. Ha potuto così riascoltare la sua voce, comprenderne l'essenza sonora e personale ed entrare in contatto e dialogare con essa dopo quasi 25 anni con la sua voce adulta e la sua chitarra, attraverso i linguaggi della libera improvvisazione e della composizione.

Title: The Sound of Words

In the third episode, Rublev takes us to discover words and their sounds. An insight into the possible combinations of spoken word, rap and slam poetry with the languages of contemporary music (from funk to jazz, from noise to free improvisation).

Featured artists in this episode:

> ADDICT AMEBA desert-blues, afrobeat landscapes, latin rock rides and ethio-jazz parentheses. The album “Caosmosi” is enriched by the words and the voices of Joshua Idehen, Anglo-Nigerian poet and singer in “Look At Us”, and Rabii Brahim, Tunisian actor and musician, in "Ya Bled".

> OSSA DI CANE is a Nu-Jazz band from Siena, Italy, born from the meeting between Giovanni Miatto and Alessandro Vagheggini, with the aim of combining the aesthetics of hip-hop with contemporary music. “La Morte Del Re”, their first album, analyzes the individuals’ deepest self in relation to a reality that surrounds them.

> YAO BOBBY & SIMON GRAB the togolese Rapper and political activist Yao Bobby collaborates with swiss noisemaker Simon Grab. An intense soundbattle between energetic rhymes fired into a dark soundworld of raw electronic bass pulsations with a dubby punk attitude, produced on analog feedback electronics. Their show is a very raw and improvised form of live experimental hiphop, Freeform Rap and Noise.

> THE SWAMP FAM mysterious, dark, distorted, lysergic and grotesque reinterpretation of hip hop and its voices, with words that seem to come from who knows what afterlife of the sample libraries.

> FRANCESCA NAIBO looked at her past and her evolution in time and this lead her to rescue old tapes she recorded at home with a cheap recorder when she was around 8 years old. In this way she could listen again to her voice, understand its sonic and personal essence and enter in contact and dialogue with it after almost 25 years with her adult voice and her guitar, through the languages of free improvisation and composition.

𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐨: New Folklore in an Hyperconnected World

Nel primo episodio, Rublev affronta un tema cruciale per la musica contemporanea: come il folklore musicale si sta trasformando nell’era digitale, in cui la cultura tradizionale e le sonorità locali vengono reinterpretate, remixate e rilanciate in un mondo iperconnesso

𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨:

» MAI MAI MAI, alias Toni Cutrone, è un musicista e compositore che esplora le radici del folklore del Mediterraneo, rielaborandole attraverso un'ampia gamma di suoni industriali e ambientali.

» Raja Kirik, è un duo indonesiano composto da Yennu Ariendra (elettronica) e J. Mo'ong Santoso Pribadi (strumenti autocostruiti), due artisti radicali che attingono alla ricca tradizione culturale di Java ed alla sua storia di lotta all’oppressione colonoliasta per creare musica che sorprende, sfida ed educa in egual misura.

»  Senyawa è una band sperimentale da Java, Indonesia, composta da Rully Shabara e Wukir Suryadi. Shabara utilizza tecniche vocali estese e diverse lingue dell’Indonesia come il Sulawesian ed il Javanese. La musica è prodotta dagli strumenti autocostruiti di Suryadi, fatti di bambù e strumenti per l’agricoltura della tradizione rurale, combinati con l’elettronica.

» Chouk Bwa & The Ångstromers Poliritmi afrocaraibici voodoo incontrano la dub ed i suoi bassi profondi. La band haitiana Chouk Bwa ed il duo elettronico olandese The Ångströmers combinano la “mizik rasin” (musica delle radici) con una potente produzione elettronica.

»  Ryan Treanor & Ocen James Treanor, musicista elettronico di Amsterdam, ha lavorato in Uganda fianco a fianco ad Ocen James, suonatore di rigi-rigi, un violino tradizionale. Insieme hanno sviluppato una collaborazione basata fortemente sull’improvvisazione che combina i due mondi musicali della musica elettronica e tradizionale e li trasporta in nuovo territori.

»   Arsenal Mikebe Arsenal Mikebe sono un ensemble di percussioni ugandese che si muove tra musica acustica ed elettronica. Attraverso la costruzione di uno strumento a percussione metallico che sfrutta i suoni della iconica drum machine TR-808, gli Arsenal Mikebe integrano la musica elettronica nelle loro frenetiche performance.

Nell’episodio ci si interroga su come l'iperconnessione globale abbia permesso la diffusione e la mutazione del folklore tradizionale, esplorando come artisti contemporanei riprendono, destrutturano e ricompongono suoni e narrazioni provenienti da radici culturali antiche. Il risultato è una fusione di passato e presente, che dà vita a nuove forme espressive in bilico tra memoria collettiva e innovazione artistica

Ogni puntata di "Under the Label" offre un’occasione unica per scoprire artisti che sfidano le categorizzazioni musicali, rompendo le barriere tra generi e culture. Le trasmissioni non sono solo un viaggio musicale, ma anche un'esplorazione critica delle tendenze culturali e sonore che caratterizzano il mondo contemporaneo

Title: New Folklore in an Hyperconnected World

In this first episode, Rublev tackles a crucial topic in contemporary music: how musical folklore is transforming in the digital age, where traditional culture and local sounds are being reinterpreted, re-mixed, and relaunched in a hyperconnected world

» MAI MAI MAI Toni Cutrone, aka Mai Mai Mai, explores an incredible blend of Southern Italian Folklore, industrial drone, proto-techno & punishing miasmic electronic music.

» Raja Kirik, is the Indonesian duo by Yennu Ariendra and J. Mo'ong Santoso Pribadi, two radical artists who draw on Java's rich cultural traditions and its history of struggle against colonial oppres-sion to create music that surprises, challenges and educates in equal measure.

» SENIAYWA is an experimental band from Indonesia, consisting of Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi. Shabara provides his extended vocal techniques in various languages including Sulawesian, Javanese and Indonesian. The music is provided by Suryadi's self-built musical instruments made from bamboo and traditional agricultural tools from rural Indonesia combined with electronics.

» Chouk Bwa & The Ångstromers Afro-Caribbean voodoo polyrhythms meet bass-weight dub electronics. The Haitian six-piece Chouk Bwa and Belgian production duo, The Ångströmers, combines the Haitian mizik rasin (roots music) with rumbling electronic production.

» Ryan Treanor & Ocen James Treanor, electronic musician from Rotterdam, spent some time working in Uganda alongside traditional fiddle player Ocen James, developing an improvisation-heavy collaboration that would push both musicians' idiosyncrasies into completely new places.

» Arsenal Mikebe Based in Kampala, Arsenal Mikebe are a groundbreaking Ugandan ensemble who playfully dance around the fringes of of acoustic and electronic music. By reverse engineering Roland's iconic TR-808 beatbox, they devised a steel-cast "percussion machine" that allows Arsenal Mikebe to seamlessly integrate bass-heavy electronic sounds into their frenetic performances.

The episode will delve into how global hyperconnectivity has enabled the diffusion and mutation of traditional folklore, exploring how contemporary artists are deconstructing and recomposing sounds and narratives rooted in ancient cultural traditions. The result is a fusion of past and present, giving rise to new forms of expression that balance collective memory and artistic innovation
