In 2009, the UN General Assembly designated 22 April as International Mother Earth Day “to provide an opportunity to raise global public awareness of the challenges to the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports”. Earth Day advances 2 Sustainable Development Goals. First is Goal 15 or Life on Land that aims to protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. The Day is also relevant to Goal 17 or Partnerships for the Goals, by strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. Earth Day calls for individual action on climate change and sustainability. Now is our time to act and care for our environment.
