Honestly, Mirage reads very much as Jazz. Not sure why they didn't go with him, tbh. But yeah, this Mirage seems very.. idk. In G1 (or at least popular fanon, I've only watched the first two seasons and that was years ago) he's a bit more emotionally distant. I think he was a noble back on Cybertron? He seems more open in the trailers.

That's exactly what I thought as soon as I heard him speak. I wondered why they didn't just make him Jazz, because that voice line, the way he fist-bumped the human, it definitely carried casual, confident attitude that screamed 'Jazz' all over it. I had this suspicion ever since I saw his alt mode, but now I'm 100% sure he was supposed to be Jazz but had his nametag switched around for some reason. They've already pulled the same bullscrap on Blitzwing in Bumblebee movie, if I remember correctly.

Although I kind of understand why they didn't choose Jazz, because he is closer to 'cool uncle figure' than 'perky young Autobot warrior'. There's definitely the element of maturity/seasoned soldier to his general character trait that makes him less appealing candidate for Bumblebee substitute...

... but then they somehow thought Mirage was okay, who also have seasoned soldier vibe on top of being significatly less friendly towards human culture or Earth. Yes, he's also less friendly towards anyone in general, as you mentioned how emotionally closed off he is.

Imagine the character potential. A WW1 soldier, the lone survivor of his now-gone noble house and possibly his entire country, who is stuck alone in some bumfuck nowhere filled with primitive civilization of tiny aliens. As he struggles to keep himself alive just one more day in an unfamiliar world constantly hiding from enemies that may or may not be here, his resolve and hope is on the brink of being lost... until he makes an amateur mistake and reveals himself to an unspecting human one day. Accidents, adventure, and tomfoolery ensues, and as the companionship between the human grows over time so does his will to fight on.

There had been so many 'relatable human character and cool robot sidekick' dynamics. When I saw Mirage's name on the roster, I thought perhaps I could expect somthing that was other way round. I still can't tell anything for sure from just trailers, but I fear that we're getting blue Bumblebee/young Jazz for protagonist for this movie. While there is a slim chance that his character would turn out to be much better and complex than that, I suppose we won't get to see any trace of his G1 self in character-wise.

Something I've always wanted to know: what made you fall in love with Bayverse!Ratchet?

Yanno what? My partner warned me not to touch the Michael Bay Transformers movies, but I didn’t listen because I was so in love with Ratchet both in TFP and TFA at the time that I wanted to know what the hell this demon of a man Michael Bay did with him. As they say, curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.

I watched clips of him over and over again and the more I watched - especially the scene where he’s killed by Lockdown - the more I realized I couldn’t completely hate him. It wasn’t his fault the movies he was in were terrible and besides, I felt sorry for him. It was a time of my life where I was feeling really hurt and betrayed by some people in my life I loved and tried to help at my own expense, so Ratchet being hunted down by humans made me empathize with him. And as much as I love, love, looooved grumpy Ratchet in TFP and TFA, especially TFP, Bayverse!Ratchet being seemingly more kindly and polite than his other incarnations really fascinated me. 

I’m also just. A sucker for minor/more obscure characters and Bayverse!Ratchet being so underdeveloped in comparison to Ratchet in all other ‘verses makes him like this interesting mythos or this shiny toy I can’t have. I just had to analyze him and flesh him out for myself.

Do you have any Ma and Pa headcanons?

I’ve thought a little bit about Ma and Pa, so let’s give this a shot.

Ma grew up in the city. She’s very liable to get into people’s faces and she got into a lot of trouble with the law growing up. The path from that to becoming law enforcement is a little bit of a question mark, but I think everyone agrees that even though Ma’s a bit rough around the edges, everyone’s happier with Ma on the side of law enforcement instead of against it. She doesn’t really talk about her criminal history, but it’s not that hard to find out about it if you ask the right people.

Ma in general is very pragmatic. She tries to keep things in scope and balance risks and rewards (and many times, especially when she was younger, would end up taking risks. This worked out many times, but not every time). She’s not the sort to care about what other people think of her, and just does whatever she needs to at any given time (Good Cop gets this from her).

Pa grew up in the country and is a very friendly person. He knows pretty much everyone in town and they know him, and he ended up in law enforcement because he wanted to help his community. He’s more than a little bit of an idealist, and he’s always trying to do the best thing and believe the best in people (Bad Cop got this from him, before Business beat it out of him). He can be a little bit of a pushover sometimes, but he does know how to stand up for himself when he needs to.

At some point the two of them ended up being partners, and their personalities clashed a lot, but they were good at reining in each other’s major flaws (Ma’s recklessness and Pa’s naivete) to get a lot of work done. Over time they got to know each other better and realized that they actually worked very well together as people, not just professionals.

I don’t think they were police partners forever. After some point, either Ma wanted to work in the city again or Pa wanted to go back home to the country for a while, and they spent some time apart from each other to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives, and when they reunited, they decided that they were happier together. They got married in the city and settled down together in the countryside, not too far from where Pa grew up.

Due to their lifestyle, they were both a bit iffy about having children. They both liked the idea of building a family together, but they wanted to make sure that if they had a child, they could support them and give them the best life they could have. Obviously, eventually they had gcbc, whose name was not originally that, but who I will continue referring to as such for simplicity’s sake.

This is where this story intersects a bit with the story of gcbc as kids, so I won’t go into too much detail, but let’s just say that gcbc growing up was a lot more of a handful than Ma and Pa were prepared for. They didn’t really understand what was going on with them until they were maybe six or seven years old, around when gcbc themselves realized what was going on, and they had a lot of worries that they weren’t being supportive enough, or not giving their son the help they needed. Even after they came to terms with what was happening, they still had a hard time dealing with both Good Cop and Bad Cop’s conflicting and volatile personalities. They weren’t perfect parents, but they did everything they could to understand and accept their sons the way they were.

They both taught gcbc everything they could. Ma taught gcbc Chinese and how to cook and about gardening and other handy skills like sewing and Pa taught them Gaelic and how to bake mince pies and how to carve wood and put on a public face and treat everyone with kindness.

When they got a bit older, Pa ended up retiring from active duty to do more administrative work while Ma continued doing fieldwork. The countryside was a lot safer than the city, and by this time Ma knew her way around. People respected her, even if they didn’t necessarily like her on a personal level as much as they liked Pa. By the time of the movie, they’ve both retired, though they still frequently drop in to talk to people at the local police department.

They’re still very much happy living with each other, even this many years later. I wouldn’t necessarily say that their love for each other is ‘passionate’, but it’s deeply rooted in mutual respect and understanding and trust. It’s not like they do everything together, because they don’t, and they don’t have to, which is fine. They both care very much about each other and their sons, and want the best for them.

I like to think that they’re pretty satisfied with life. Really, they just worry a lot about gcbc, and to be fair, there’s a pretty good reason for that.

Tbh I've always thought when Pyro said the whole "fathers carry the gene" line, he was being sarcastic/trying to make Bobby's parents uncomfortable, cause he says it right after Bobby's mom says it's all her fault.

yeah that’s likely, but looking over the movies as a whole there’s never a case of maternal x-gene carriers…mystique is never confirmed to be kurt’s mom and by having sabretooth be logan’s brother they made their father the obvious gene carrier, not logan’s mom like in comics

bay got mad that cade and optimus looked pretty gay/bi in the last movie because of the "if you look to the stars, think of one of them.. as my soul" scene and inserted a straight people kiss with cade in the last knight to make us mad lmfao
