Fate: The Winx Saga, of all things
I started watching Fate: the Winx Saga on Netflix. Yes, it is the gritty reboot of an early 2000s fashion fairy doll universe. There was no reason to expect it to be good.
But like. It’s REALLY good.
Back in my retail days, I worked at Toys R Us when Winx dolls were first a thing. So I've been passing over Fate: The Winx Saga because it looked like a YA romance/drama based on fairy toys from 2006. Which it is. But it's also entertaining and engaging, which I did NOT expect. It's also nice to see more of Eva Birthistle, who I loved in The Last Kingdom. And the title of the first episode is taken from a Yeats poem. Altogether more substantial than I expected this show to be.
I used to restock the shelves while I was working. The most memorable thing about Winx dolls was that they were at the opposite end of the "girls' toys" section from the Bratz.
And yet, we're examining narratives about responsibility, power struggles, perception, and deception. Magically-fueled psyops on at least two sides.
There is swearing, sex, violence, betrayal, and blood. So if those are issues, take caution.
But I would definitely recommend this show, which is such a nice surprise.
