Lucius watched, unconcerned, as his daughter enteredthe library, no doubt having finished her last book and in search offresher reading material.
She said nothing to him, so he remained silent aswell.
Amara stood in front of one of the bookshelves, staring at it as if something about the very nature of the furnitureoffended her. She must’ve found something that interested her, butit was too far up for her to reach on her own.
Oh, well - if she really wanted it she could just askhim.
Lucius was about to turn to his own read when, without so much as a sound, one of the books in the higher shelvesleft is place and floated down, gently landing in Amara’s hand.
He let out an uncharacteristic gasp and leaped fromhis seat.
Amara had yet to show any magical potential - wasn’tit late? Draco had made plates explode before he was two; shouldn’tshe have manifested something; was it late? he didn’t know exactlyhow those things worked, after all; could she be…? - and then thereit was: not a bout of magic, but a controlled act, almost like shehad known what she could do for ages, and just had never bothered toshow it to anyone.
Lucius made his way across the room in long strides, falling to his knees by his daughter’s side and embracing herbefore she could think to protest. He had been sure that everythingwould turn out well for Amara – she was a Malfoy; it always did forthem – and he had never been around small children often enough toknow exactly when they were supposed to reveal their magic, but therewas this nagging voice in the back of his thoughts suggesting thatmaybe the worst would come to pass and that he should think aboutwhat to do it if it did happen.
He was glad he wouldn’t have to find out.
“We have to tell your mother.” He announced, pulling away from her and training his smile into something thatdidn’t show quite as much elation as he felt.
