@unfolded73fics made me the best, most incredible birthday present I never knew I wanted. It was an artistic expression of exactly what my mind’s eye sees whenever CS are on screen together. Granted, there wasn’t a unicorn farting rainbows, but that’s exactly what my heart felt like when my eyes first landed on the masterpiece she crafted for me. You guys have no idea of her huge talent, it’s incredible. She went to the best art schools and I know because I had an uncle once who told me that the art schools @unfolded73fics was seen walking into was the best art school and, I mean, he should know because he went to a museum once and really liked the art that was in there, so he’s a big league art expert. I mean this woman is the best artist on the face of the earth, period.

Not at all! Original fic here.1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?Well, this was actually a sequel to Though We Shall Land No More. I knew Emma and Killian would eventually talk about what happened there, and I felt like the ride back from Neverland would have made a great place for it - given everything that was going through Emma’s mind at that point, Killian was by far the most “safe” person for her to talk to. This fic was the result.12. What do you like least about this fic?This is one of my few fics where I don’t have an intense desire to go back and furiously edit/re-write what’s already there, so I’m actually mostly good on this? I probably would have stretched out the smut more, but that’s basically it. If I’m being honest, though, I actually enjoy the prequel more than the fic it inspired.15. What did you learn from writing this fic?That Emma actually moves pretty damn fast in her relationship with Killian. My fic is an AU, but even if you look at everything in canon, she’s making out with him in front of Granny’s something like 2 weeks (if that) after Neal dies. It only takes Emma a few months after that to tell Killian she loves him. I know it seems a lot longer than that, especially to people who watched the show in real time (I only started watching halfway through S4), but the episodes generally only cover a day or two at most. If you look at the actual timeline, things move very quickly. So in this particular ‘verse, where Neal isn’t dead and she hasn’t gone through the lost year/Walsh thing, it made perfect sense to me for Emma to approach Killian and open up the way she did.Fic asks.

Breathless: 3, 5, 11

3. What’s your favorite line of narration?Pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before, but: “She makes her way to the railing, leaning on her elbows and breathing in the salt air, and when she looks up it’s easy to understand why Killian loves the ocean so much. The moon on the waves creates an endless sea of flickering lights, almost as stunning as the sky above her, and the world feels too big, like her heart is trying to swell large enough to fill it.”I’m no poet, but I wanted to capture that “overwhelmed by the awesomeness of nature” feeling and I think I actually got it on that one.5. What part was the hardest to write?Everything in Chapter 6, which mostly dealt with Killian dealing with and recovering from symptoms of PTSD and depression. The depression part I’m familiar with, but the rest was a struggle. I got some very good advice from someone who knew what they were talking about on the subject, and the best feedback I got was from someone who thought I’d captured it well. I’m most proud of Henry’s conversation with Killian, where I tried to strike a balance between “smart, observant kid who cares,” and “still an inarticulate kid.” 11. What do you like best about this fic?That I was able to turn a fluffy, mildly-angsty one-shot into a fic that ended up being so much more. At first it was just a few sequels with a fun premise, but then it turned into this giant thing that actually dealt with Killian and Emma’s mental states after the Underworld, which I really wish the writers on the show had explored more. There’s so much awesome material there and it was fun to dive in for a just a little while.Fic asks.

I know, and I've always felt that the only person's permission he should seek is Henry's, but I'll allow that the class system of the EF, and Emma being a princess, may figure in here. In any case, I trust in Queen Jane to write this scene.

I’m just really really really hoping for, what with the asking permission and the diamond solitaire, that my kind of fix-it theory of Killian in a complete panic googling about LWM wedding traditions and then sticking to them To The Letter to try and give Emma everything he thinks she would have imagined, and then that building up to a complete turning of all of that on its head by the end of the season is what we’re building up to!

Relationship status: Married a year to @i-cannot-read-this, together 6+, and rapidly approaching 7 years since we met at a Halloween party. We were both wearing leaves as part of our costume, he bummed beer and cigarettes off of me (and I was happy to oblige), and we were the last people to leave the party. It was meant to be.

I used to be this way about Doctor Who, so I totally get it. I think I've just gotten so salty about the writers' sexual double standard when comparing Emma vs. Regina, and that salt has crystallized into a solid headcanon that is unshakable for me. But clearly the show's not going to come down on it one way or another, and people can have the interpretations they want.

I understand that, too, to be honest, because OUAT fandom and CS shipping are definitely areas in which some of my tropey preferences are catered to - but at the same time overlap a fair bit with things that I side-eye in terms of media representation of women a lot. What I dig as a reflection of uncertainty and self-doubt also looks a lot like purity/morality-concerned editing or double standards, tbh. Not to mention I’ve got some serious bones to pick regarding the ways in which weaponized female sexuality/Evil Is Oversexed tropes have been consistently deployed on the show associated with a variety of characters.

(And also, though I did read your post about the topic most recently, this wasn’t meant as a vagueblogging reply to it in particular, but more in response to a series of posts I’d seen over the past few days, sorry if it came off that way!)

PS: Crystalized salt headcanon is an amazing concept, I love it.

Same, same. I read a number of modern AUs now, and at first I did it grudgingly. But there are such a large number of quality AUs in this fandom that to not read them is to really miss out. My own writing is still fully canon compliant though.

You know, it’s strange - the only OUAT fic I’ve written thus far are the four ficlets I wrote for the August positivity challenge. All of them are canon-compliant, at least in theory, because I just wanted to practice playing with the characters and try writing in Emma’s voice in particular and not bother with anything else.

Now every idea I have to write in this fandom is an AU, and it’s a very weird experience.
