In late September 2017, Swinburne sent 100 competitors to the 25th annual Australian UniGames on the Gold Coast.
Team Swinburne brought home medals in athletics, dance, cheerleading and beach volleyball as well as making their UniGames debut in surfing and women’s ultimate frisbee.

Business student Joseph Ratterman won silver in pole vault, representing Swinburne while on exchange from Cincinnati University in Ohio, USA.
Joseph started athletics when he was 12 years old and five years later he stepped in when his team needed a pole vaulter.
“I got into it, started liking it, a lot!” he says.
Swinburne’s cheerleaders won two gold, three silver and one bronze medal.
Captain Syaza Izzati was thrilled with the results and is looking forward to the national cheerleading competition in November.
“Competing was pretty awesome, I love my team… we worked really hard, I was proud for us all to get a medal.”
Twins Kindle and Zoe Aloisio won bronze in the hip-hop doubles on Wednesday. Dancing to Macklemore’s ‘Can’t Hold Us’.
“I’ve loved the whole experience, being part of the team and being up here,” says Zoe.
The pair has been dancing hip-hop, contemporary, jazz and ballet for ten years and both joined the dancing club when they started at Swinburne this year.
Mixed beach volleyball came second in the grand final to Macquarie University after having an outstanding undefeated run.
Captain Alex Ielo and teammates Bonnie Lethlean, Siobhan Brennan, Mackenzie Lowe and Jason Sam had not trained together before UniGames and have now made lifelong friendships.
“Once we started playing, we came together really well, you become super close,” says Alex.
The mixed beach volleyball grand final was broadcasted live on the Razor the Razorback Facebook page.
