hey, aubrey. how did your boarding school deal with stealing? it happened a quite a lot on the boarding school i were on.

It happened a lot at mine, too!! I think anytime you have that many people gathered together, there’s inevitably going to be theft.

I think for cases of petty theft/small items from one another, it was resolved by the floor moms with disciplinary action and returning the items. One of my roommates got her clothes stolen multiple times by a girl on our floor- if i remember correctly, her items were given back to her and the girl was put on probation after some detentions, etc. (Most detentions involved deep-cleaning stuff, tbh.)

Major item theft, such as valuables, money, etc, was usually investigated by staff and if a perpetrator was found they’d either go on very severe probation or they’d be kicked, depending. I never had anything like that happen in my friend circle while I was there- it wasn’t like anyone had anywhere major to hide stolen goods in a room, so people were much more subtle about it. Minor acts of theft- food, clothes, art supplies- were a lot more common.

Minor art supply theft from the staff happened...like, all the time, and I think the teachers kind of stopped caring as long as it wasn’t a major piece of equipment. Brushes, exactos, paper, ink, etc would all kind of ‘end up’ in our toolboxes, whether through intent or through sincere accident/forgetfulness. The same thing kind of happened in college, too, though. Art supplies are a good that needs to be replaced occasionally as is, so it never really affected any of us just to keep the one paintbrush we really liked or a set of pastels that mixed better than the ones we bought. Stealing from local establishments- like, shoplifting from the WalMart in town or the grocery store across the street- was met with immediately being kicked out if you were caught. The town already kind of hated us, so they really delivered maximum punishment if you were caught doing anything illegal in town.
