"WORKERS CLAIM TAX DEDUCTIONS ARE NOT LEGAL," Winnipeg Tribune. May 9, 1933. Page 3. ---- Street Railway Employes Invoke Section of Industrial Disputes Act ---- Basing their claim for exemption on a section of the Industrial Disputes act, the Street Railway em- ployes, One Big Union, have asked the Winnipeg Electric Co. to refuse to pay the two percent wage tax.
Section 57 of the Industrial Disputes act, which forms the basis of the employes' claim, as amended in 1925 by the Federal House of Commons, reads in part: "Employers and employes shall give at least 30 days' notice of an intended or desired change affecting conditions of employment with respect to wages or hours; and in the event of such intended or desired change resulting in a dispute, it shall be unlawful for the employer to make effective a proposed change in wages or hours or for the employes to go on strike until the dispute has been finally dealt with by a board."
Liable to Fine The union has also drawn the attention of government and Street Railway officials to section 58 of the act, which provides that any employer making effective a change in wages contrary to the provisions of this act is liable to a fine of not less than $100 and not more than $1,000.
Formal protest has been lodged with Hon. W. J. Major, attorney-general of Manitoba, and Hon. W.A. Gordon, federal minister of labor, while C. H. Dahl, vice-president of the Winnipeg Electric Co., has been notified of the employes' action.
Appeal to Ottawa A telegram sent to Mr. Gordon, Monday, by Alex. Hume, secretary of the Street Railway Men's union, reads as follows: "Manitoba provincial government has passed legislation compelling employers to deduct two percent from workers'wages. On behalf of Street Railway employes covered by present board under Industrial Disputes act we herewith geek protection of sections 57 and 58. We have notified company of our objections to deductions and requested them to notify the Manitoba government that any deductions will be unlawful according to Disputes act which Manitoba government passed as law during 1926.
"We request that you notify company that no alteration in our wages can be made directly or indirectly until they have complied with requirements of Disputes act. Men anxiously awaiting reply."
The men affected by the proposed wage tax are motormen, conductor, busmen and employes of the mechanical, track and gasworks departments. The tax is scheduled to be collected from the Street Railway employes' pay for the first time May 31.

For those of you that are more politically knowledgeable/aware than I am:
What exactly is the issue a lot of the Walmart protestors are protesting about right now?
Trying to look up news articles about it, I could only figure out that they're protesting against labor and wage abuse (which, obviously, is something that should be protested about, especially at Walmart). But I couldn't figure out what generated these exact protests.
I have a grandmother that works at a Walmart - a self-parodying tea-partier, anti-union grandmother - and when I asked her what the strikes were about she just said "Lazy people just don't want to work on Thanksgiving." She also tacked on that "a lot of silly people are going to be losing their jobs over this".
Considering that that characterization almost certainlyisn'tthe case, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone here new about it (even if some of you could just point me to some articles to read, I'd appreciate it).
Thanks!
