The Super High School Level Critic. A fanfiction (prologue)
Her judgment could make or break lives. With a positive comment people could achieve hysteric greatness. But if they earned her common scathing reviews… even the strongest of fans would become brutal; Brutes. Since childhood she had sent detailed analyses to corporations including her observations. This show has no variety. That book used too simplistic sentences. A defective line of products, flat notes in songs, any detail that there was to be criticised, she could easily spot. Her brazen cheek had earned her the respect and fear of countless artisans. Nothing was safe from her. Some even suffered heart attacks at hearing their work had been reviewed by her. If she attended a movie or play there was always more attention on her than the show. Though she would rarely allow her verdict to show through her stoic veneer. And so it remained on her face at that very moment. But why did she feel like this? She who was so feared by others faltered in proceeding. What was this feeling? Dread? Apprehension? Nervousness? Shyness even? No… disbelief.
This moment could not be real. It couldn’t. It must have all been some elabourate daydream. How had she managed to be accepted to such a prestigious academy? She was only a critic, schools didn’t offer scholarships for such things. Her cynicism began taking over in her ratiocinating. She was a celebrity… this invitation was clearly a ruse. They would brown nose her as soon as her foot stepped out of the car door. It would all be an act of false kindness, she would be treated to only the best. All so that she would give the school a good review. Then again, it already had an outstanding reputation… Was this just the final test? Perhaps-
“Are you okay, Sabrina,” her mother asked from the driver’s seat. The girl was suddenly snapped out of her internal debate.
“Oh. Yes, I‘m fine. I was just thinking.” Though her conscious had rejoined the physical plane, her eyes still stared out the window blankly at the school.
“Are you going to get out or did you change your mind?” Well that was the question, now wasn’t it. Subjection to pitiful sycophants or missing out on an opportunity to graduate from an academy that promised success in life. She could use that, certainly. Financially she was sound, but there were other factors which intruded on her life. Maybe she would even be able to follow her aspirations. No longer tethered to this… social obligation. She didn’t choose the critic life, the critic life chose her.
In that moment the universe split into two. In one universe Sabrina decided she didn’t need scholarly background to decide her fate, she would manage on her own. That Sabrina was better off. For this Sabrina, the one who resides in the majority of those alternate instances made a grave decision. This Sabrina decided not to back down from any challenge, as dictated by her ideals, values and morals. That nobody would call her a coward by walking away from the school. Advanced work was nothing. And indeed, in the end of it all nobody would be able to call her a coward for her actions. But the path she would walk was a dark one. The moment she opened the door and stepped out and onward to Hope’s Peak began the helix downfall of her life.
