Creature Awaits #181
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )

The Jaguarundi
A.K.A: The Gato Moro, the Leoncillo, the Tigrillo, the Eyra
Scientific Name: Herpailurus yagouaroundi
Region: Southern Mexico and much of South America
Size: Averaging roughly 12" (30.5cm) tall at the shoulder and 44" (112cm) long.
Interesting Notes: With its shorter legs, slightly flatter head shape and minimal marking variance (even on the back of their relatively rounded ears), this unique feline almost resembles more of a cat mixed with an otter or weasel than a true cat. Their coloration ranges from blackish-brown to rusty red, with kittens of darker tones tending to be born in rain forests and kittens of lighter tones in drier regions.
Wild Cats That Are Special
Manul/Pallas cat (Otocolobus manul), these guys are just...precious, grumpy old man kitties:
Jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), this a cat that looks like it got tired of being a weasel and decided to jump in the cat family instead:
Serval (Leptailurus serval), this kitty has big ears, and kind of looks like what would happen if it were possible for a cheetah and a maned wolf to mate to produce offspring, with maybe some gerenuk in there. Majestic as hell:
Lion (Panthera leo), look, they’re well-known as hell, but if you really think about it, no other cat has such stark sexual dimorphism:
Flat-headed cat (Prionailurus planiceps), this is the most un-cat-looking cat that ever catted. There are animals not even in the same suborder that look more catlike than this cat. Cute little weirdo, though:
Bay cat (Catopuma badia), look at this monkey demon. It looks like when classic painters tried to paint cats:
Andean mountain cat (Leopardus jacobita), which is just a stuffed animal toy come to life:
Tiger (Panthera tigris), another well-known one, but while stripes aren’t exactly unheard of in the cat family, no other cat species has such clear stripes, and what a colour combination! Like branches on a fire:
Caracal (Caracal caracal), look at those ear tufts! An otherwise elegant, if generic cat, those tufts are just so frickin silly:
Pampas cat (Leopardus colocola), it looks like a sad raccoon with a funny nose or an annoyed ferret depending on the subspecies:
Sand cat (Felis margarita), I put it in my wild cats that look like housecats, but it fits here just as well. It looks like Felidae’s answer to Canidae’s fennec fox (rather catlike itself):
Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), yes another well-known one, but their heads are shaped funny, plus the tear streaks, and they’re loooong:
Marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata), or a lemur, pretending to be a cat:
Kodkod (Leopardus guigna), it’s just...a generic leopard/jaguar/lynx/ocelot/some spotted frickin kitten that stays a kitten. Forever. It’s also very small:
Nice to look at, not to pet! Many of these kitties are unfortunately endangered.
Happy Spooktober! 🦇🎃👻
