First Listen Friday: Transitioning 6x07
As we move into the latter half of the season, the songs in each episode become more and more of a mixed bag. There are some numbers I really like in this and some amazing moments. And then there’s Vocal Adrenaline...
Ugh, speaking of VA I’m not wasting the bandwidth or one my precious 5 video slots on this post for this 1:12 video. Basically they sing Bon Jovi and Will reflects on his improved station in life but the kids are jerks and hate him.
So the Anderberry twins get egged and Will thinks he is going to show the VA dickwads how to become better like he did with New Directions. (Excuse me what?!? I demand receipts on this.) Which means it’s time for Will to ret-con his relationship with Unique. This song has every awful thing about him: lack of self awareness and rapping. I’m sorry you had to be a part of this, Unique.
Onward to the Rachel Berry House Party Train-wreck Extravaganza part two! If ND learned anything from Will it was clearly that boundaries should be ignored. So here we are in the basement drinking with minors. But I’m going to let that slide because the songs in this episode are finally starting to get good. Roderick and Mercedes sound great on this number and I love them as a duo singing this song. I also love Hummelberry being epic white dorks. Once again, Mercedes elevates every moment. *chef’s kiss*. Minors aside, I would love to be at this party.
So we can all agree that at this point everyone is wasted, right? Or maybe Mason and Madison have just had too much sugar. Regardless, this Kluet (yep I said that) is adorable and catchy as all get out. S6 has a lot of parallels to S2 and here we see Blaine watch Kurt sing with intensifying hearteyes. It’s no Blackbird moment, but this is a moment for Blaine all the same. He cannot resist this gorgeous specimen in that dumb hat. (I cannot blame him one bit.). I ship two idiots and ship them hard.
Is this song about Rachel’s friendships or Klaine’s romance? Both, both is good. Samchel have just boned upstairs (again this is a party with your students present) so now it’s time to lay around in that afterglow with this number. I like the collection of memories they show as HP style moving pictures in her room but this song brings all the fun we were just having to a halt. Wow this mid-game has had a lot of songs.
We end the episode with the best thing Glee has done in a while. It’s a triumphant moment for Unique owning the stage and singing in support of Sheldon (with that impressive choir behind her!). Some Glee songs are fun or good, this moment is Iconic. Capital I. This song from Hairspray and her amazing voice already make the moment but, as Sheldon gets his serenade, the curtain comes up and there is not a dry eye at this laptop. So fucking good.
And here we are the end of the post. Release the hounds!
