I’ve been debating doing a #transformationtuesday photo for a while now, because it felt a bit hypocritical for what I’m going to say, but it also seems like the perfect time for it. I didn’t start my fitness journey to gain anyones approval. To be honest, I wasn’t concerned with my image at all. I was doing it because one day I went to the doctor and she opened my eyes to the stress I was putting on my body. She told me if I didn’t try losing weight, it would be extremely difficult, if even possible to have children. No, I’m not planning on having kids anytime soon but having that option taken away was probably the worst thing I could have imagined. When I started losing weight, I started to hear so many compliments like, “Oh, wow! You’ve gotten so pretty!” or “You look so good!”, and I really appreciate them. It means a lot that my hard work is showing. But those types of compliments leave implications that can take a toll on self-esteem. This is what our children are growing up with in various ways. They are exposed to compliments with a double meanings and forms of media that contribute to this narrow minded ideal. We are constantly shaming larger people for being “unhealthy” or wearing things we think they look “gross” in. That only contributes to the stigma that comes from being different than society’s mold. It’s time we started being conscious and take ownership of our actions. We make up this nation. We decide what stays and what goes. I stand with all the people that have ever felt shamed for simply existing. I stand against the pressures of this one-sized beauty generation. #womensrightsuniversity #unitedagainst #bodypositivity #loveyourself #bodypostivitymovement (at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi)
