I’m starting a new school year with UCI’s Uniting Voices, and as I was singing in the shower, I thought about how much we did last year. Since it’s going to be my last year in UCI, I really want to sing/perform wholeheartedly for every single gig we have. 

Even though I had a lot of good experiences last year, I feel like I was holding back a lot. It was really bad, because there were a lot of times when I would get extremely anxious during rehearsal. I remember I had to keep squatting down during downtime to concentrate on breathing while everyone else was talking. Lots of wrist-wringing and feeling nauseated. I think there were 3 people in the group who sort of knew about it. Going into this new year, I don’t think I’ll experience that anymore. There was a lot of time to grow in between then and now. 

But that’s me. I’ve had 3 years to adjust to college, and there will be some people coming in as 1st and 2nd years. I don’t want them to have to feel like that when we’re together as a group. I was told that my job as Vice President was mainly externals, but to be honest, I think my main focus will be to make sure that everyone is okay. And if they aren’t, to know that we’re supporting them. I felt extremely fortunate to have had those three individuals with me. They walked me home, sat down and talked with me, held me when I cried. I’m constantly reminded that there are some really beautiful people out there. 

So, IN THE NAME OF LOVE (hahaha), I hope we can all be that kind of friend to each other. And, of course, have lots of fun while being awesome.
