Rory's only met the head of UNIT once---- the day soldiers stormed into their house while he was getting dressed for work. Not really the impression you want to make, but at least nobody had commented on it.

Of course, Rory's known about UNIT for longer than that. Because he'd done his homework, after Prisoner Zero. Mostly he'd been reading up scientific journals and theories, but he'd spent time trying to look up anything he could about aliens on Earth too. There was a surprising amount online about all the times aliens had tried to invade. He'd found a little about UNIT then, with a little extra-legal help from Mels. Not much, of course, but enough to know who dealt with most of the alien activity on the planet.

He probably should be surprised they hadn't run into them before this year. But then, it's not like he and Amy usually spend much time on the planet, especially not in their actual timezone.

He should also probably be more surprised to find them on his doorstep again. Somehow, he's not.

"Um, the Doctor's not here," he says, leaning in the doorway, glad that this time he's fully clothed. "He only lasted about three days. But we can try getting in touch if you need him…."

If Kate gave 11 his own lil desk at UNIT how would he decorate it? What would it look like after a few days ?

after a few days, it would be cluttered. sticky notes everywhere. none of them make sense to anyone else. an impossible number of notebooks. every single one began neatly for two pages before devolving into gallifreyan equations, sketches of alien wildlife, recipes, star charts, grocery lists, and increasingly frantic arrows connecting ideas that only the doctor understood. a rubik's cube forever half-solved sits on top of a pile of reports being used as paperweight, because finishing it would be boring. he keeps a drawer of snacks (jammie dodgers, various biscuits, jelly babies, etc), whereas a blue mug sits on top of the desk within arms reach full of lollies.

a tiny potted cactus sits beside the monitor. somewhere underneath everything, an actual UNIT-issued keyboard. his chair is perpetually turned sideways because sitting normally lasted perhaps thirty seconds before the doctor was kneeling on it, balancing on the armrests, or abandoning it altogether to pace while talking at impossible speed.

IT DIDN'T LAND LIKE Clara was being lectured or comforted. Kate was far too busy and straightforward to patronize someone else that way. Everything Kate said had the weight of a truth that too up so much space that it could induce claustrophobia.

Clara told her, she would be up front with the commander-in-chief of UNIT. The former companion had been on the run for some time. Being caught was sloppy but sloppy to the point where it felt deliberate. To be caught, recognized, and remembered. That was what being alive felt like.

She allowed Kate into the diner as an invited guest. "Do you think there are two types of people out there? Those who can't manage their own cups, empty or full. And those who will always pour into others until there's nothing left to give," she said. A sort of vacancy lived behind her eyes. She hadn't gotten re-accustomed to feeling of being grounded in this way yet.

"I still have more to give, you know. Must mean that my responsibilities are going to collect their debt eventually." She followed behind Kate, non intrusive as a shadow.

Yaz should go home.

She knows Dan and Graham are probably hanging around outside somewhere, even though they'd left a while ago, probably they'll get the train back to Sheffield together, 'cause Graham doesn't like cars so they'd definitely have got the train down, and Yaz probably shouldn't keep them waiting.

But Yaz can't help but feel like it's the end of something, as soon as she steps out of this room. As soon as she gets home, to her parents' flat and Sonya. That'll be that. Here, with all the Doctor's other friends, it had felt more like Doctor-life, not Normal-life. She could pretend, just for a moment-----

She'd never had chance to talk much to Kate, in the tunnels when they'd met--- she honestly barely remembers her from then, because the Doctor had been there, for the first time in years, and Yaz hadn't been able to focus on anything other than the Doctor. And today, again, she'd been too busy, rushing after the Doctor as they ran from place to place. But it still means she's known Kate longer than anyone else here, other than the boys.

Now, as people drift off into smaller conversations, Yaz moves towards Kate. Curious. Because Kate seems to have more puzzle pieces that fit together than most people here.

"You've known the Doctor a long time then? Like all these different regenerations of hers?"

the doctor insists kate is far too responsible to be any fun. kate insists the doctor is far too irresponsible to be left unsupervised. they are both correct.

he believes installing trampolines in the UNIT break room will help with the team morale, to which kate refuses. however, she does end up submitting a request to the appropriate UNIT department for review to have one installed. she did not endorse it. simply asked whether there was a possibility of it being passed through official channels.

kate is one of the very few people who can say “doctor, absolutely not” & actually make him hesitate. not because she has authority over him, but because he knows she’s usually right.

the doctor insists that kate needs more fun in her life & frequently attempts to drag her into harmless adventures. kate insists that running UNIT is already enough excitement for one lifetime. despite this, she always ends up keeping the strange souvenirs he brings back, because every odd little artifact is proof that somewhere out there, across all of time & space, the doctor remembered his friend.

the doctor insists kate is basically a companion, but with a building & an army of scientists at her disposal. kate insists she is a strategic ally. everyone else at UNIT knows this is just kate’s professional way of saying she’s adopted a very strange alien.
