Unity in the Face of Adversity
In times like these, it feels like the progressive movement has had its teeth kicked in. We’ve lost the presidency and failed to take the senate. And now we are going to have to contest with Trump’s cavalcade of conservative cretins invading the federal government. Ouch. When you put it like that, things sure seem bleak.
And let’s not sugar coat it. Things are bleak. But as demonstrated by our nationwide protests, we are not taking the results of the election lying down. And that’s a good thing. We need to be fired up and visible. We cannot allow our dissent to be ignored. But how do we use our energy and our disgust to fight the incoming regime?
The key thing that will make or break our dissident is if we are undisciplined. We cannot allow ourselves to give into infighting, we must show a united front. And we also must branch out and seek the aid of any and every group that we might find common ground with.
Whether it’s teaming up with Green Peace and PETA to combat the Opposition’s gutting of the EPA or bringing in liberal Christian groups and denominations to fight against social injustice, we’ve got to expand and make as many friends as possible. We’ve got to laser focus on the points that we agree upon and use our combined weight to counteract anything and everything the Opposition is plotting.
So, talk to your friends, co-workers, and family members. Even the ones you may not agree with on much. Find some common ground and use that as ammunition for the wars to come. We cannot afford to write people off. Winning hearts and minds is how we will gain our strength. Remember, divided we are only people, singular, and bound our own strengths and weaknesses. But united, together, we are The People. And when The People are united under a common cause, there is nothing we can’t accomplish.
